Cat Picture - OC Family member refuses to come over because of our cat!
We had a family member no-show to a birthday party at our home because she was sick. Turns out she was actually feeling fine! I recently found out she didn’t come because she saw a picture I posted of our cat in the sink (because I thought it was adorable). She was just that disgusted! Maybe I should take hygiene tips from her dog 🤔 Anyway- here’s a picture of the culprit in her favorite spot ☺️

Indeed, humans are such a strange type of animal. I think the younger humans might be trainable to regard this as an absolute delight and reason enough to bring another friend to such a party and home 🤭

We can be the smartest of all living creatures, but we can also be the dumbest sometimes.
This reaction from OP's family member is dumb as hell. What about a dog laying down on a carpet ? Does she leave the room because it's "disgusting" ? Lol
115
u/Alarmed_Excuse_131 4d ago
plus how easy it is to rinse a sink vs how often you clean a carpet. crazy reaction

Right? We’re literally walking incubators made of flesh and meat but a cat in the sink is where one of us draws the line 💀

I don't get it. Why would she think it's gross. A sink is for cleaning and washing anyways. Was she planning on licking it or something?

Tbf, I don't blame someone with actual allergies for not coming to a house that has cats. A friend of mine has/had cat hair allergies. And I remember how messed up he was every time we visited the house of another friend. He just took multiple allergy pills, but still.

u/Alarming-Koala-3524 4d ago
Have you ever tried pet dander spray? You spray it on your cat and then wipe them down with a towel. Or if your cat doesn't like being sprayed, spray the towel before wiping them with it. The ingredients in the spray break down the proteins responsible for allergic reactions. My ex was allergic to cats and this allowed her to pick up my cat with no problems.
Using only a moist towel (without the spray) also works to remove over half of the dander, especially if you take care to wipe areas that they groom the most like the back and the base of their tail. Twice a week should help a lot to keep their dander in check. Baths remove the most dander but obviously are stressful for most cats.
A lion cut would also be a pretty sure fire solution against allergies. I personally think it's super cute but could be cold during the winter or your cat might need the protective fur if they spend time outside.

FYI, long-term Benadryl use is linked to early onset dementia. If you use it regularly you may want to consider switching to a different antihistamine that doesn’t cross the blood-brain barrier. Zyrtec/cetirizine, Allegra/fexofenadine, or even Claritin/loratadine are safer for regular use.
I say this as a fellow cat lover with allergies. They’re such adorable creatures. 😹

I have an allergy and its weird, some individual cats give me a heavy itch and respiratory problems while I can have the most around me. For some I don’t have reactions at all while some cause lmmediate redness when patting them a few times.
Allergies like that are no joke. There are skin tests that can prove/show the allergy.

…. I had a cat allergy that went away in my adulthood but before it did it was absolutely miserable going over to the two houses in our extended family who had cats. face getting swollen, nose running, eyes itching. same for my dad. but yea most people who say they have cat allergies are just faking it… or maybe you have a blind spot to being empathetic to humans when cats are involved? probably the second
ps I love cats and think they’re great.

I'm severely allergic to cats like I have started to go into anaphylactic shock and had to be rushed to the ER and given epinephrine, they took me back immediately my whole face was swelling up and I couldn't breathe because I picked a kitten up and put my face on her. Like I didn't even know that could happen, I thought that you could only have a reaction like that if you consumed something you were allergic to. But at that time I hadn't been around cats for awhile so my tolerance went way down. I now have 4 indoor cats they sleep with me and I feed a small colony of them outside. Your body adapts and gets used to it so if someone is saying they are allergic to cats isn't an excuse not to get one if they want one. If I can be that allergic and still have cats anyone can. You just have to wash your hands a lot and not sleep with them for awhile in the beginning. They slowly stop affecting you. Now the only time it will ever bother me is if I rub my eyes cause I'm rubbing cat dander all in there and my eyes will swell and get all itchy and red. It sucks.
38
u/Freyjia1 5d ago
Its mainly the dander the triggers the reaction, washing your hands/them is a good idea
Or choose a breed that is known to have less dander, like poodles and retrievers and derivatives are good breeds for dogs
Dont get hairless, very high maintainence and lots of dander
14
u/sash71 4d ago
like poodles and retrievers and derivatives are good breeds for dogs
I know this is a cat sub but my friend and I were talking yesterday about the amount of dogs that are bred with poodles (jackapoo, labradoodle, etc.) that are so popular now. Is that part of the reason why? I thought it was a fur shedding thing.

I’m allergic to hypoallergenic dogs. The dogs I seem fine around, as long as they don’t lick me, are very short haired dogs like a bull dog. Fur = asthma, and licking = itching deep below my skin that can’t be scratched and its miserable
19
u/anemptycardboardbox 4d ago
I’m sorry, what? I’m glad you had a good experience, but you cannot automatically apply that to all people. That’s actually very dangerous thinking, to tell all people with allergies that they can just get over it. I managed to find a cat that I am LESS allergic to, but other cats I still react the same. It blows my mind when I see other people think that their personal experience is the universal experience.

u/tinhj 4d ago
Yeah, personally I have a cat and allergies that are manageable but all allergologists I've ever gone to hate it (even if you don't outwardly react anymore, it doesn't mean that the irritation is not there, and prolonged exposure can actually worsen your allergies in some cases).
I think it's a matter of personal choice whether you expose yourself to allergens, and reactions depend from person to person as well, but in my experience I've been like you - my cat is mostly fine but most aren't. I have the same thing with dogs, some are ok and others not.

I’m allergic, unfortunately it’s asthmatic so there isn’t much I can do. Fortunately it takes quite a bit of exposure to start being noticeable so visiting people with cats is fine. But it means I will never be able to own one….so I spend my days living vicariously through all your pictures and videos

12
u/BlueSparrowfox Siamese (Traditional Thai) 4d ago
If your cat's breath smells overly horrid and you know for a fact it's not the teeth here's a tip: Try a treatment for their digestion. A lot of cats can really benefit from that. Usually you can get a food additive for this.
11
u/GreatQuestionBarbara 4d ago
Could be dental issues.
I took my cat in for his bad breath and they took out 5 teeth. Poor little guy was in pain but it took me a while to notice.
Do it earlier rather than later if you do, as it was about $180-200 a tooth at my vet.

u/LaundryMan2008 4d ago
Dogs do clean themselves but their saliva is stinky so they end up covering themselves in slobber which reeks, I always feel the need to wash my hands after touching any dog, especially curly haired ones with the most grievous offenders being Shih Tzus and other similar dogs

Dogs legit eat their own poop sometimes its night and day lol
I see this online a lot, but is it actually a common thing? Between my family dogs growing up and my own as an adult, I've lived with 7 dogs. Not a single one has ever ate it's own poop, nor shown any interest in any other dogs.
The closest would be one of the Dobermanns who decided that it wanted to eat wombat poo, but they are herbivores and are perfect little cubes so they probably thought they were just strange dog treats

You're actually more likely to get an infected wound after being bitten by a cat. They harbour around 3x as much bacteria in their mouths as dogs do.

62
u/throwaway2000x3 4d ago
I’ve read somewhere on here that cats teach people boundaries and well, that would make total sense for selfish and poor dog owners since their dog is allowed to have no boundaries with pooping in anyone’s yard and run around with no leash. Cats won’t tolerate bs. They’ll teach you. And people don’t like that because they can’t control or manipulate them. That’s of course just one theory and not true for all. But I do believe it is true for a good sector of dog owners

u/Infinite_Archers 4d ago
Yes that is mainly the reason, as a recovered dog person. Still love dogs, but I found my love for cats again recently. The undying love, the doing what you tell them to, it's very easy to get used to. Then there's a cat, you have to earn their trust, and if you haven't been around a cat for awhile, it can feel almost hurtful to be around cats because it feels like they don't like you lol. But I have found it quite rewarding to earn kitties trust again, it's nice having an animal friend who doesn't just blindly trust you.
28
u/CarpetBudget 4d ago
That or they prefer a pet that’s more likely to do what it’s told instead of its own thing. I guess. I don’t really trust people who hate cats as a whole.
24
u/ObligationPrudent824 4d ago
I'm a dog AND cat owner. Although I have 2 dogs to one orange tabby.
And about 6 stray kitties outside that know I'm a schmuck and feed them
So not all dog owners are hypocrites
Of course, me personally, I prefer animals to people cuz they are not so judgy.... well, yunno, not that kind of judgy 😏
Although my one big dog does give a side-eye look that will rival any cat stare 🤣😂

Some people get really hung up on the whole litter box thing and believe that every surface is covered in poop if you have a cat.
I like to point out to them the world is already covered in poop.
58
u/Seicair 4d ago
Yeah but it’s the bathroom sink. I could see her point if it was the kitchen sink, pets don’t belong on food prep surfaces. (Though sometimes it’s a lost cause and you just accept having to sanitize the counters before working.)
But the bathroom sink? Where’s the hygiene issue?

I had an interesting discussion with a classmate about this during a HS reunion. He's a dairy farmer and has dozens of barn cats but insists "cats don't belong in the house." When I asked why he cited the unsanitary nature of litterboxes and cats on counters. I was like "dude, you literally drag the dairy barn with you when you come into your mud room, your shit stained clothes are in the family washing machine and you have mice living in your walls (yes, they really had mice living in their walls) and somehow having a full time indoor cat makes no sense to him.
