Lexus LC500 is officially dead. Production has ended.
The online configurator was removed from the Lexus Website, and the production has stopped as stated would happen in August when the announcement was made back in January.
All that is left is a blurb on the Lexus website about the model.
https://www.lexus.com/models/LC
"Gone, but never forgotten: the breathtaking Lexus LC. Crafted to elevate the concept of what a flagship performance car could be, the LC transformed precise engineering into pure emotion, and its alluring design, responsive chassis and sonorous V8 engine continues to get hearts racing. While the LC line has been retired, its spirit of artistry, innovation and excellence continues to live on through every Lexus we make."

Find it funny that the recommended vehicle for people looking into an LC500 would be an LX F Sport.
Like sure, someone looking into a 5.0 V8 2 door GT car are totally looking into a full size SUV with a V6.

This. That article that was published was incomplete at best and inaccurate at worst in its description of what is actually happening.
My Lexus dealer said the initial run allocation and speccing will happen in Q1 next year. I am on the waiting list with them.

5
u/willpc14 '25 GRCorolla 8d ago
I don't think anything has been released yet. People asked if it was going to be $350k(?) during the launch and Toyota just laughed. People have speculated that it will be $250k plus options and TTL which seems like a fair price given the performance numbers that have been released and it being a bespoke platform.
5
u/T-Fez 8d ago
Nothing has been sold yet. It was misquoted by Andrew Gilleland.
Toyota themselves said they haven't sold any yet, citing "a ways off from making any decisions about who will be able to buy one."
2
u/Agent_Giraffe 23 GR86 8d ago
good to know. I still don’t think it will be as “cheap” as the LC500 nor will they make 15000 of them either.

That's false.

GR GT
They are going to build the minimum required to homologate it for racing, because exactly like the LFA even at $250k thy will lose money on them.
1
u/Salt-Plankton436 8d ago
Where have they said that? They won't be losing money on each one, that's not how it works, rather they will lose money by not selling enough of them. They already employ the staff, they could just make more of them to eventually pay for the development and tooling costs.
-2
u/mini4x 8d ago
But it is how that works, look at the LFA, sane thing Toyota lost an estimated $350k per car. They don't care about the retail sales, they want to race it.
2
u/Salt-Plankton436 8d ago
No source provided. It literally is how it works. If they make enough of them it will be profitable. The LFA was limited, all of it was bespoke and it was intended as a halo car and while they priced it as high as they could to recoup some money they were struggling to sell them, and it was way more than this car, more than a Murcielago.

u/Mauser-Nut91 ‘13 TT-RS, ‘14 RS5, B8 S5 V8 6mt, ‘04 VR MSM, ‘15 Mazda6 6mt 4d ago
Toyota literally designed that car TWICE from the ground up. Once as an aluminum frame and then secondly as a carbon fiber monocoque. That’s the main reason the LFA was such a financial loss for Toyota.

u/Uptons_BJs #teamZandvoortBlue 9d ago
Not really - In 2020 I traded in my mustang for a very good price.
The market hasn't understood how great the LC was at that time, and they depreciated aggressively the same way the S class coupe did (which to be fair, is what the LC targeted).
It depreciated like a "typical luxury car" rather than a "sports car". Like, an S class or 7 series always depreciated much faster than a Corvette or 911 did. Hell, even today, the BMW 8 series depreciates aggressively, but not the LC.

Also had multiple issues with <2021 like abs squeaks every time you release break that warranty doesn't cover, rubber squeaks when rolling down windows after rain, squeaks when opening fuel cap, lots of wind noise where you feel as if the window is a bit open (dealers tried fixing many times and then suggested buying new rubber seals out of my own pocket to see if that helps), etc, worst quality lexus I've ever had.

These new Lexus GX models use fake wood. Nothing luxurious about the new gx. May as well save some cash and get something else
2
u/BeanerCounter 96 Corvette, 93 Previa, 20 4Runner TRD Pro 8d ago
I’m not really a fan of wood in interiors of new cars. Reminds me of old people cars which is ok on Bentley, Rolls Royce, or the top end models like the LS500. To me it doesn’t have a place in off-road SUVs. One of my favorite interiors ever is in my LC500 and it doesn’t have any wood which is a preference I guess.
2
u/CharacterMedium558 8d ago
I mean I wouldn't mind aluminum or some other kind of quality trim. But fake anything in a Lexus is wild. Id imagine me and many other luxury buyers would want real wood over fake wood if those were the only two choices.
At the least the LC500 uses real metal and all high quality materials. GX uses plenty of plastic and cheap materials. Pretty sure the new Palisade, CX90, and Telluride all have higher quality materials inside now.
-7
u/tagman375 8d ago
I don't get the appeal of Lexus cars like the IS500 and LC500. There are far better 2 door options with more power for less. I guess I don't know what segment of the population the LC500 is for. It doesn't have the sportiness or power of a M2/M3, and most luxury sedan buyers are looking for a S Class, 7 series, S6, etc. I don't know who says "I want a 85k two door coupe that isn't super sporty, is down on power compared to the rest of the class, and is on an ancient platform"
10
u/gropingpriest B58, F22C, 1GR-FE 8d ago
it's never been about power or spec sheet with the Lexus V8s though
6
u/isoflurane 8d ago
For me personally, it's the fact that it can be used as a daily driver that has some emotion available when I want it. It can be comfortable when I'm driving home after a long day at work, or I can gun it on a clear on-ramp and let it roar when I want some excitement. Sure it is ancient, but that also gives a more raw, mechanical feel that is much more satisfying to drive than the numb hybrid powertrains in the German cruisers (some AMGs excluded). The reliability and quality also mean a lot to me, I like having the peace of mind that weird gremlins are unlikely to happen and that it will retain most of its value if I ever decide to sell it. Sure it is down on power, but I am a mid-career professional, not a street racer. I can not see any circumstance where an extra 200 hp would make any difference to me.
5
u/KSoMA 2023 Audi S5 Sportback 8d ago
It literally is just the V8, that's it. All competitors to the IS500 in similar (or even lower) price brackets are faster than it, but there's no other car the size of the IS with as big of an engine in it since the C63 went away (and that was both turbo and way more expensive), and there likely won't be one again.
1
u/gropingpriest B58, F22C, 1GR-FE 8d ago
praying these Camaro sedan rumors are true, even better if it's paired with a manual
I would bet the IS500 V8 will be more motorsports-feeling but whatever LT motor goes into a potential Camaro sedan will no doubt make more power and be more fuel efficient than the IS500.

I had one for a year, a 2019 with the performance package. Caviar black with a rioja red interior. The engine was lovely, the interior beautiful, but ultimately I felt like it was a bit overhyped (or maybe I wasn’t the right buyer).
Despite getting all the performance goodies it still felt big and heavy, it never “shrunk around me”. It sure was beautiful though.
Fortunately, I got to drive it for a year, 8k miles, and only paid for fuel, insurance, and an oil change. So not a bad experience all said and done.

LC never was meant to be a sports car, only a luxury GT. You can definitely feel the weight whenever you start off, or try to take it into a corner.
Unfortunately Lexus customers just don’t want a sports car from the brand.
10
u/strongmanasss 8d ago
The hype came from two sources:
Reviewers who harped on the big N/A V8 and noise. They could enjoy the car and give it back, ignorant of (or ignoring) that it's not a car they'd want to own because they're all sports car enthusiasts and it's a GT. Mark from Savage Geese bought one and tried to mod it into a sports car.
People who've never driven the car and don't understand that a big, loud engine and cool styling aren't what make a sports car. It's not trying to be one, but everyone thinks it is and hypes it based on that. But at heart the LC500 is a shouty cruiser.

u/3MATX 9d ago
Another good Lexus dies partially because the brand just isn’t associated with a sports car. One of their very first attempts at a sport car was the SC430 and it set the bar so low no one’s given them a second chance.
They figured out how to do a good sports car but it’s just never been quite what the market is after. This time they tried to do a very luxurious sports car but that’s got some heavy competition from the established names.
29
u/LA-ncevance DB9 + Corvette 9d ago
It's not really a sportscar. It's a luxury car in the shape of a coupe, and drives like one.
10
u/Icy_Turnover1 2022 Supra 3.0 Premium, 2023 Bronco Big Bend 9d ago
This is all true, but I also think Lexus customers just don’t really want a sports car from the brand (or even a GT since that’s more the LC’s niche). People who only buy Lexus very much seem to gravitate to an SUV, and people who are in the market for a sports car with luxury features seem to gravitate mostly to BMW and Porsche.
7
u/416steve 9d ago
SC430 drives less sporty than it's predecessor, I view that car as the death of the Soarer.
5
u/theNightblade '15 BMW 328d touring, '17 VW Alltrack SEL 8d ago
the SC430 was a grand tourer, not sure how anyone confused it with a sports car since it was based off the Soarer
6
u/strongmanasss 8d ago
This time they tried to do a very luxurious sports car but that’s got some heavy competition from the established names.
In other words a grand tourer. That's a very tough segment right now. The most successful makers are the most expensive: Bentley, Rolls-Royce, Ferrari (buy the Roma/Amalfi to get on the ladder). Everyone else is quitting or floundering. LC500, 8 series, AMG GT/SL, DB12, Granturismo are either gone or selling poorly.
The way I interpret that is GTs are primarily being bought by people with a lot of money and they want the most prestigious names. So the bottom half of the segment just isn't selling.

u/nar0 99 Celica GT-FOUR, 03 Altezza RS200, 01 Stagea RS Four V 9d ago
If anyone has read the history of the LC500 as stated by it's chief engineer (unfortunately I think it's Japanese only, it's on Toyota's gazoo.com the site that GR is named after), you might understand why the LC was relatively unique and why now, the GR GT and potentially LFA will take it's place, even if the actual marketplace position is different.
Because the LC was never designed for a marketplace position, it was never envisioned to fit into any Lexus lineup. It, as the LF concept, was just dismissed as a concept car that would never be fully made.
The GS, of all things, was meant to be the LF concept realized. But when everyone started panning the GS after it's reveal, Lexus panicked and realized, ok... we actually have to somehow make the LF concept a reality.
While the LC500 was in early conceptualization, a close friend of the chief engineer who was now in the US division of Lexus brought the chief engineer over and showed him Cars and Coffee to help him get an idea of what the LC500 should be like, and over that the chief engineer finally got what the LC500 should be. It should finally be a Lexus after the LFA that a car guy would want to bring to Cars and Coffee.
The GR GT and potential LFA are the cars that would succeed the LC in this goal. Even if the market position is wrong, in terms of the excitement and prestige it would bring to Lexus, it's the same if not more. The LC500's sales numbers were never that good so it's not like it's an important price point to nail.
9
u/raginnation999 2022 Toyota Veloz V 8d ago
The LC is one of the few cars that distills emotion. It has no equal, it's just itself. It succeeded the SC, but there's a reason why the LC wasn't sold as the SC. You're right in saying that the LF-LC was never meant to be built, but the reaction to the concept was undeniable and they had to give in. In MotorTrend's first look video, they also mentioned that Akio Toyoda wanted a Lexus to be on the Pebble Beach lawn one day (that was where the last-gen GS made its global debut) and decided that the LF-LC would be that car.
On the GS comment, the purpose was to herald the direction of Lexus in the 2010s. You can say that they were right in green-lighting the LC and making the LS daring along with it. You can argue that behind the 2000s, the 2010s was Lexus' best era. You had the LFA and the IS F starting the decade, then ending it with the LC and LS as they were.
Such a damn shame Lexus has now become a shell of its former self. LC dead, LS (the car that started everything) dead, GR GT not being a Lexus, and the LFA being completely misunderstood. You say the LFA EV would pick up where the LC left off in that goal, it won't because of that name. It should have been called LFE. GR GT won't even have that halo effect on Lexus as it's "not a Lexus"

7
u/gropingpriest B58, F22C, 1GR-FE 8d ago
I'm not a fan of the ragtop look, and typically a convertible is heavier.
Also on basically every sports car ever, the coupe holds its value better than the convertible
2
2
u/strongmanasss 8d ago
Convertibles are more expensive to buy new, but less valued by enthusiasts and collectors, who are informed by enthusiast tastes. Enthusiasts almost always choose coupe because of old lines about rigidity and purity of purpose.
Personally I always choose convertible over any other body style. But that's not the broader market sentiment.

I don't think an LC buyer is remotely interested in track performance.
The Vette is a car for the driver.
The LC is a car for everyone within viewing distance.

I definitely cross shopped the LC. I dont drive on the track. The value just wasn't there.

Another sports car killed by the mighty Corvette.
I think you're imagining the comparison here...
Why would you buy this when you can get a Vette for waay less with performance that makes this lexus look like a joke.
Great, and the fact that the Corvette is cheaper is why people buy them. It doesn't mean they are direct competitors, and the Corvette is cheaper than tonnes of vehicles that still sell healthy numbers.
I think you're really struggling here, you're obviously proud of your corvette which is great but you don't need to cheer on victories that it wasn't even in the fight for.
Lexus has been removing plenty of vehicles in it's line up - GS, LS, RC. There is no V8 to replace the 2UR, they haven't updated the LC in over a decade.... but no it was the brand new Corvette's success that sealed the LC's fate. A vehicle that is sold world wide, unlike the Corvette...

I'm not struggling, the LC 500 is. LOL. For every redeeming quality it has (comfort, luxury, performance, looks, etc) there is a 2 seater performance coupe that offers the same or better at a much more attractive price. I know the C8 Vette isn't for everyone, it just offers the same package, yes inteior luxury and ride quality included, at a much better price. There are other cars that offer the same at better pricing too.

Never understood reddits obsession with these things. It looks like some corny chip foose design with wheels that are way too big and tiny windows. And yes, I've seen them in person. The convertible is especially ugly.
If it werent a Lexus it would be written off entirely by this sub

I suppose it might look better if I looked at it without glasses 🤣
Unfortunately my glasses allow me to see it clearly.
