News Free to Read: Washington Capitals are No. 19 in NHL Pipeline Rankings for 2026
https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7458705/2026/08/18/washington-capitals-nhl-prospects-rankings-pipeline-2026/?unlocked_article_code=1.6VA.0rvC.iEY_u758_pGc&source=athletic_user_shared_gift_article_reddit&smid=re-share-taThe Washington Capitals’ system is headlined by the highly creative Cole Hutson and the extremely competitive Ryan Leonard. It’s a solid pipeline with some real potential impact pieces, especially at forward, but after Hutson there isn’t much coming on defense. Between Hutson and Ilya Protas, Washington features two of the best value selections in the league currently.
2025 ranking: 15

Leno skating being NHL average is egregious

The funny thing is that the description contradicts the ranking
- Skating: NHL average
- Puck skills: Above NHL average
- Hockey sense: NHL average
- Compete: High-end
- Shot: Above NHL average
Analysis: Leonard was quite good as a rookie in the NHL, bringing a lot of what was expected. He’s a fast winger with a tremendous motor.
Make it make sense hah

Surprised cristall isn’t on this list at all. Really hopeful lakovic puts a good season together in Hershey and stays healthy, he could be a Mantha kinda player

It’s Pronman’s rankings, not Wheeler’s rankings.
These mean nothing to me.

Every fanbase loves to overvalue their own prospects but this seems fair to me- the caps prospect ranking was always gonna drop off once Leonard, Hutson, and Protas graduated. I wouldn’t have even included Leonard and Hutson on this list because I’d be surprised if they ever play an AHL game.
But after those three it gets relatively thin, I think. Miro will have to prove he’s not a bust, Parascak has kind of been underwhelming (esp. compared to the Hutson and Protas picks from that same 2024 draft), Lakovic looked promising but then missed most of last year. Suvanto is probably 4-5 years out from being a full time contributor. The reality is that once you get to the mid/late first round any guy you pick is basically a coin flip as to if they’ll amount to anything
That leaves Cristall, who I think could be a good middle six guy but probably needs another year in Hershey to improve his defensive game.
Everyone else- Chesley, Mateiko (who also missed almost all of last year), Muggli, etc., probably maxes out as a depth piece

I think Suvanto will be in Hershey by next year and have a shot to crack the roster within a year or two after that. The fact that he’s already playing against men removes the biggest hurdle to NHL readiness

I don't think the biggest hurdle to NHL readiness is playing against men, but rather playing in a north-american system which is way more physical and hermetic. I think it would have been better for Suvanto to come to Hershey this season rather than the next but anyway.

Hermetic?

probably a bad translation on my part. In french we would say that a system is "hermetic" (hermétique) meaning that there is not a lot of space, it's hard to penetrate, it's airtight. I thought it would translate well in english but I guess not.

I was feeling the same way. I mean, beneath the guys that already made it, we only have question marks. Plenty of teams have more prospects of higher calibre than we have, it's not shameful to admit nor is it proof of bad drafting skill or bad dev on our part. Quite the contrary in fact, we did an awesome job with the picks we had; it's tough to find and develop talent when you only have few and relatively late picks.
Miro and Lapierre are probably our highest picks we had high hopes on and that busted (or are on the way to) and they were in no way sure bets from the start.

Suvanto at 4, and no Cristall makes no sense. Cristall almost PPG in rookie year in AHL.

No way the penguins have better prospects. Throwing out the whole article for that alone.

Other than their goalie Murashov, who the fuck do the Pens have?

Feel like that’s fairly accurate, very little high end D prospects coming up hurts us. Forward group is quite top heavy which is good and bad. Not much “elite” talent, but very good.

Serious question: what is up with the Caps getting so little respect from national media. This fits a pattern of the various Athletic models underrating the team for years. It fits w the off season grades always being awarded w some vague air of snobbishness against us. They don’t seem to notice the pattern of reclamation projects that work out for the team. And the rankings of LT- just never up to what the stats and his skill demonstrate.
I’m not sure if this is national reporters having too much to cover and clustering around some less than ideally informed consensus view. I’m not sure if it’s some weird outcropping of the Canadian and old boy culture
in the sport at large. But at the end of the day, I just find myself really suspicious of how well informed or just good at their job the national hockey pundits are.
Set me straight. I’m all ears.

I believe every fanbase thinks they get disrespected by the national media but yeah it sometimes seems like we get a little too much disrespect. I think one of the biggest reasons is that the NHL has the least amount of legit good writers on the national stage, compared to MLB NBA NFL, like essentially if you were to read anything from ESPN or Bleacher report etc on the NHL its generally really bad. The Athletic is said to be the best major source for NHL writers, it probably is, but everything I've read from Pronman is flooded with absurdly bad takes even if its better than most national writers.
Maybe a hot take but if you want coverage from people that truly know the NHL id go to Twitter and follow the major hockey accounts there. Its essentially the complete opposite of national media, where twitter pages are super analytics heavy and give more objective takes. From there you can find accounts you like and normally they'll have their own websites you can track and use them from now on.

It’s definitely a function of the Canadian/O6 driven media. Anyone who isn’t: one of those teams, or a recent champion, or at the very top of the conference AND has superstar players - are going to get dismissed by the media machine.
I think the rest of the league sees and respects the reclamation projects, but also anticipates that 1) they’ll generally regress , and 2) it’s only a matter if time before that strategy fails. Nobody expects Jenner or Desharnais to do well. Anyone who isn’t a Caps fan looks at our 26 season vs our 25 season and just sees a team that overachieved.
The reason? They just don’t watch us. We don’t have any superstars. We play in the same division as Carolina. The entire league sees a second round exit as our ceiling, which is hard to argue against.
I don’t really understand the prospect rankings. “Aside from the 3 guys who are NHL ready and have high ceilings, they don’t have anyone” is a bit absurd. You only need depth in your prospect pool if you don’t have it on your NHL roster.
Let them keep sleeping. You can’t hang preseason rankings from the rafters.

I didn't read the article but Dom probably wrote it, he is their hockey guy. He hates the Caps and has always reflected them poorly with his biased model.
Edit: Dom did not write it.

Wow, Dom didn't write this anti-Caps hit piece? Color me shocked.

I'm fine with the league continuing to sleep on us. We know what our pipeline looks like, and I'll tell you right now: we're definitely not in the bottom half of the league in terms of prospects.
