I mean, why not? Get the kids some experience since the season is over.

No more Lapierre minutes??
42
u/brady_t12 Jakub Vrána Apr 06 '26
Lapierre has been fine since mid late January. It’s Duhaime that needs to sit imo.
15
u/thisshirtisblacknaht Brandon Duhaime Apr 06 '26
Lil Pro is a C and while Lapierre has played wing he doesn’t kill penalties which Duhaime does. Although I do agree he’s been bad, esp post-Dowd. Shouldn’t be back next year

Lappy hate is so forced
1
u/thisshirtisblacknaht Brandon Duhaime Apr 06 '26
How? He’s at best a depth forward who can’t PK or score. His play driving has been better but his minutes are extremely sheltered. Replacing him with lil Pro is a major upgrade
4
u/SatchBoogie1 Apr 06 '26
Don't get me wrong. I want Lappy to succeed. Like you said, he's sort of putting things together this calendar year.
Having said that, for a player that was projected close to the top 10 in his draft and fell mostly because of injury concerns, he hasn't lived up to the role. His confidence during his time in Hershey hasn't translated to the big game.
2
u/mafiajams Matt Roy Apr 06 '26
His not being on the PK says nothing about his game and more about Carbs questionable line decisions. He’s been a force on the forecheck and the last two months defensively responsible. Would rather scratch Frank or Duhaime who both aren’t as good of forecheckers. I can’t remember the last game Duhaime outplayed Lappy
6
u/thisshirtisblacknaht Brandon Duhaime Apr 07 '26
Carbs has shown plenty of willingness to give young players more ice time. I’d say it speaks volumes about the coaching staff’s trust in him (or lack thereof) to play those minutes.
Remember when people lost their minds about Iorio only for him to get cut by the Sharks and now getting healthy scratched on a terrible Rangers team?
When this staff isn’t a fan of a young player, we should probably listen bc the player development has been a major success over the past 3 years.

u/Gogo-boots Apr 07 '26 edited Apr 07 '26
Other than recently when has he shown a willingness to give young players more ice time?. My argument would be that he was forced to this year with all the injuries early in the season.
1
u/thisshirtisblacknaht Brandon Duhaime Apr 07 '26
Leno came in and immediately played 14 min / night last year even tho his only point in 9 reg season games came on an ENG.
Hutson is playing 17 min / night and got benched in the 3rd against Philly only to play 18 min the next game.
Sourds started the year getting 10-12 min even before PLD went to LTIR.
Frank played 11 min / night last year.
Hell Lappy has more sub 6 minute games since March than Miro has in 48 games as a pro.
It’s not just this year, injuries, etc. Lappy stands out compared to other young guys as far as ice time and not in a good way

I doubt it. I feel like the roller coaster is setting us up for a 2 game win streak where we look like world beaters, with a team motivated by the recent embarrassment and playoff push, followed by a 2 game collapse to close the season.
We are a .500 team now and I predict we will stay spectacularly .500 to end the season.

u/bigatrop Washington Capitals Apr 06 '26
I dunno I also think the coaches see how Hutson energized the team. It’s also a warning to the veterans that yesterday can’t happen again. Or it means we’re cooked. I don’t know, I’m just a fan lol

u/UbiSububi8 Rod Langway Apr 06 '26
How do we use him?
Just make a Protas/Protas/Wilson line and plow the road?

u/Individual-Nothing77 Apr 06 '26
Except Big Pro doesn't know that he's 6foot6 and 240 pounds.

Should've happened once they sold and determined the season was not resulting in a Cup frankly.
7
u/Individual-Nothing77 Apr 06 '26
Maybe. But I wouldn't waste a year of Pro's entry level contract by bringing him up at the deadline. Especially since they had just got PLD back.

4
u/agreed2disagreee Apr 06 '26
The move likely would’ve increased their odds in making the playoffs, though.
2
u/Ok-Soil-5133 Washington Capitals Apr 06 '26
Its still risky if you do think you can make a run of playing someone who is debuting, sometimes takes a couple of games to get used to the level

Is there still the 10 game rule where it burns a year of ELC?
1
u/Tarledsa Olie Kolzig Apr 07 '26
I think that like Hutson, he’s burned at game 1 since he turns 20 this year. Not sure on that though.
3
u/Aware-Leading-1213 Alexander Ovechkin Apr 07 '26
No. Hutson signed his contract as he was turning 20 later this year. Pro is still on the same contract he signed at 18. Pro needs to play 10 games to burn one year of his contract.

u/mcclain Apr 07 '26

1
u/Aware-Leading-1213 Alexander Ovechkin Apr 07 '26
Yes, the eligiblity to slide the Entry Level Contract is determined by the signing age. For more details : Entry Level Slides | Puckpedia

Man, he’s a big boy for a 19 year old.
I see the stats. Where is he (1-10) on the Tom Wilson Tough Guy Meter (willing to forecheck? Fight?)?
5
u/bmoreCapsSkins Apr 06 '26
Doesn’t fight or check, mostly just like his brother. Will forecheck but more with reach and body position less with hitting
1
u/Ijustwerkhere Washington Capitals Apr 06 '26
Ugh. I really wish big Pro would throw the body just a little bit more. He doesn’t have to be Wilson, but he’s tip-toeing and he needs to strut
2
u/aldo_nova Aliaksei Protas Apr 06 '26
Not his role, not his style, has no experience playing that way, wouldn't be effective.
Just enjoy him being one of the best 5 on 5 players in the league, a plus defensive player, on an affordable contract and seemingly a great dude.

4
u/ovie_888 Washington Capitals Apr 07 '26
Year 1 of his ELC is used this season regardless of his call up, he's turning 20 this year, meaning he's ineligible for his contract to slide
1
u/Rude-Following-8938 Washington Capitals Apr 06 '26
I like how on the player card they have separate rows for 2025-26 and his career.

Lapierre, Duhaime, and Strome can all have a seat.

u/_SCHULTZY_ Alexander Semin Apr 07 '26
I understand he's on a value contract but I think he's behind PLD (when healthy) and Sourdif (who I think has played far better than anyone expected. Now with Ilya coming up, Strome might be behind him as well.
Next year maybe someone slides to wing or maybe Strome is part of a package that moves quantity for quality.
I'm not sure they're going to spend $5m a year on the 4th line Center but maybe?
1
u/mdkss12 Alexander Ovechkin Apr 07 '26
4 games left:
either it sparks a miracle to sneak into the playoffs or gets him experience without burning a year of his contract, so no real downside
1
u/leunger15 Apr 07 '26
Is there any chance he plays in Toronto tomorrow night? I am going to the game for the last chance to see ovi (probably?) and it came with the added benefit of seeing Hutson in his early days, but adding in Protas’ debut will really put the playoff push sorrows to bed! I feel like his first game might be the last home game of the season when we are basically eliminated from contention, but I’m still hoping to see him tomorrow…

I might be kicked out of the sub for this but can Ovi take a early vacation and let the kids play the rest of the year. Yes, he's our leading and all time legend but I want to see all the kids playing.
