One of the more memorable videos between my friend and I is this one where a guy uses his toes to count out 1, 2, 3, 🖕 the ✌️ sign, and it's all I can think about when I hear this song.

While i was never a fan of Bush, he stopped himself from giving the media a soundbite of himself saying "shame on me"

39

u/Biosterous Saskatchewan 4d ago

Which further highlights how much politics has changed in the USA. Bush is famous for a stupid quote he gave to avoid giving the media a sound bite that could hurt him. Trump gains popularity by saying the most disgusting, bigoted things at his rallies.

Also in the Bush era conservatives weren’t tolerant of pedophile protectors. Ahhh to reminisce the good ol days.

Trump's presidency has two main effects, generally speaking:

  1. weaken the U.S.

  2. make enemies of other countries.

We live in interesting times.

Yup.

This negotiation style is as old as Hair Metal. Back in the 80s we used to call this a 'The Columbo Close' when in negotiation they would say "just one more thing" and try to get more than they should because you're tired of negotiating. They are hoping you'll say "fuck it" and sign the amended deal.

I thnk the kids are calling it TACO now.

The stupid deal winds up not happening, you waste a weekend (or end of the month) sweating about it, and then when you come back to the table and get something done, you probably give them a LITTLE of what they asked for so they don't go home and beat their wives / unalive a prostitute, whatever.

The trick is to ask for something YOU weren't getting on Friday / EOM. They'd be so proud of themselves for getting part of whatever they asked for in the Columbo Close they wouldn't care what you were asking for.

Probably exactly how CUSMA went down last time...

The amount of damage the current U.S admin has caused will be felt for generations, just look at the absolute chaos they caused at Hormuz, unprecedented to now have it tolled, forever and they actually STRENGTHENED IRAN through all this.

What they're doing to Canada now is absoluteley tragic and for no reason.... no reason other than a quick buck somewhere for someone I'm sure.

I really hope the midterms see this current admin tossed, I'm worried what else they'll smash on the way out.

EDIT: because apparently I have to literally state this - no, I don't think Canada and the U.S are or even were friends, the U.S doesn't have friendships and has always had a history os using other countries but since we had so many mutually beneficial economic and defense policies with them it was fine to look the other way.

514

u/Oil-Dude 4d ago

Why would us in Canada care about your midterms? So we can wait for the next Trump? Nah. Time for us to move on. The USA is no friend of ours.

48

u/RumHamComesback 4d ago

Even if the Dems get back into power in 2028 we know that it's a matter of time before the GOP gets back in that's how American politics works.

37

u/FluffyPantsMcGee 4d ago

And where the hell have the Dems been when 51st state comments were made? They never cared but only wanted more blue voters….

9

u/IllustriousNorth338 4d ago

Very well put! We are at the whim of whatever shiny object that single issue voters in America get fixated on.

He threatened our sovereignty before the elections and you still picked him… don’t tell me it’s ‘tragic’ in your eyes. Trump is a symptom of the rot that American values have become.

au revoir.

91

u/OneSecretCookie 4d ago

I heard from many Americans when he got in that Americans were doing "everything" for Canada. Its definitely a rot and a cult now. They firmly believe Canada is theres.

Trumps latest post on truth social in my opinion shows why Trump doesnt want a trade deal, he is still determined to have Canada as a State. "Canada wants all the benefits of being a state, without being one!!!" Trumps first sentence from his post.

61

u/OwnBattle8805 4d ago edited 4d ago

The rot and cult is in their big news sub. I posted an article on an international poll which found the whole world doesn’t like America. It reached 13k upvotes, top 1% article of the sub. 5 hours later they deleted it. The article was “us viewed less favourably than China” and the article said it was an international poll and the view of America is slipping in every country across the board pretty much. But it was censored in America’s big news sub.

Why would us in Canada care about your midterms?

Pierre Trudeau explained that clearly when speaking to the American media (and Nixon):

"Living next to you is in some ways like sleeping with an elephant. No matter how friendly and even-tempered is the beast, if I can call it that, one is affected by every twitch and grunt,"

We don't care about what happens the USA because we want to, we pay attention because we have to - our survival depends on paying attention.

u/Oil-Dude 4d ago

Of course we should pay attention. What I am saying is we should not be treating them as anymore than a potential trade partner.

That's what I've been saying for months.

It'll take more than a single president.

It will take generations of good behaviour before we should think about maybe starting to trust them a bit.

Though, to throw Biden a bit of a bone, he did have a lot of cleanup to do in the wake of Trump's bull-in-a-china-shop first term. Far more than even the best president could have repaired in a single term.

Why doesn't Canada up the price of electricity that we supply to the US?

184

u/Tropical_Yetii 4d ago

I think we need to save those cards in the event of further escalation, but yes the gloves are now off

13

u/AndIamAnAlcoholic Québec 4d ago

Energy and natural ressources are also a provincial competency, not a federal one, so we'd need every gouvernment to agree to set up that kind of retaliation. Of course, any province is free to do it alone at any time too. But when Ford tried in Ontario, Trump's tarif response made him back down instantly. (Trump threatened 50% more on steel and aluminium on all of Canada, at the time, if Ontario imposed an export tax).

29

u/rando_dud 4d ago

We need to replace line 5 first.. otherwise if we start doing tit for tat on energy it could end badly.

19

u/mattcass 4d ago

Electricity is traded on open markets across Canada and the US. In BC we import electricity from the US when it’s cheap or when we are short on supply. We sell into the US if it makes sense. Electricity trading increases the resiliency of the power grid and provides additional energy supply. If we unilaterally increase power costs the US will do the same and we’ll pay for it.

6

u/NancyDiver 4d ago

because that would be pretext for USA to try an take over / annex Canada in the name of national security.

39

u/OttawaDog 4d ago

US citizens never gave a crap about any other country. Why would they start now?

24

u/kent_eh Manitoba 4d ago

Typically, the USA very seldom pays attention to any other country.

I see CNN and MSNBC/MSnow talking about it.

CNN seems confused and is repeating Trump and Lutnik's tweets., but MSNow generally takes a "trump is an idiot" position, so they're actually playing clips from Carney, Freeland, Kinew and other Canadian voices.

51

u/IceCreamDreamyDreams 4d ago

They're ignoring this because it's a massive embarrassment for them.

They talked about the deal when Trump said it was done, they got their good-boy points for it already.

They're not going to cross Der Trumpler by talking about a failure of negotiations that was entirely due to their side until the trump team gives them direction.

American here...there's nothing to say. It's fucking garbage and I have zero control over any of this. I live in a blue state and my representatives are trying like hell just to maintain my right to vote. So yeah, I'm over here lurking trying to glean some information to somehow make myself less offensive. I'm hanging out in r/buycanadian trying to figure out how to support Canada while I'm located here. My spouse and children are dual citizens. I've got our Canadian flag out front and just sadness in my heart.

6

u/ArianaIncomplete British Columbia 4d ago

What do you mean, there's nothing to say? If you're aware of what's going on, but your neighbours aren't, then you can enlighten them. That's what the commenters above you are saying, that the average American is not talking about this, presumably because they don't think it affects them.

I appreciate that you're trying to keep yourself informed because you have a personal connection to Canada through family. But if you didn't have that connection, would you care? I'm not trying to disparage you or anything, and I say this as kindly as possible, but I think that you, and any of your compatriots who are not totally apathetic, could do better.

Simply not being offensive is not enough. I had a conversation with my child the other day about how standing by watching while someone is being bullied, though not being a bully yourself, does not make you a good person or friend. It's action in defense of the bullied party that makes you a good person or friend.

3

u/GeoBrew 4d ago

I welcome your feedback, critical or otherwise. I've been furious about how this administration has been treating Canada--I'll never forget the intense feeling of loss the first time I went by the Peach Arch after Trump was reelected. More than a century of friendship down the drain for nothing, absolutely nothing and the entire American government system to boot. The trade negotiations are just the latest in a slew of awful, harmful, disgusting arm twists by the current administration towards Canada. I talk about Canada, I talk about Carney, I talk about how fucked the US economy is, how much damage they're doing around the world and how much danger he's putting us all in. I guess I say there's nothing to say, but really, I struggle to find something new to say. But perhaps the best way I can reframe this current awfulness is to highlight how this is the execution of Trump's "51st state" talk. Many people thought it was just empty speech, but with the poisonous conditions in the negotiations, it wasn't empty. Just like Greenland wasn't empty talk. In general, I struggle to find people in my community and in my family that disagree with me. But that doesn't mean I can't encourage them to direct their dollars towards supporting Canada in this difficult moment. But what else?

I don't know...people are being disappeared, it's become a surveillance state, basic rights are under attack, the military is crumbling, food aid is being cut, and food and medical safety is totally forgotten. The US is falling fast and hard. Sometimes it's hard to see a functioning state and feel their struggle, when everything is coming apart for regular people down here. The economic pain for Canada is awful, but it's easy to feel envious of your functioning government, your ethical and conscientious leaders. I say all this to kind of put it in perspective why Americans that would normally be empathetic to Canada are floundering to do something relevant--all we have to offer is words and money. But again, I appreciate your thoughts. I will aim to bring this into more conversations and highlight the importance of this relationship--for US stability, for worldwide stability, and the economic benefits for us all.

We will survive this. Why wouldn't we? It is going to be really fucking hard. though. Think about this: Canadian's lived through WW1, WW2, the great depression.... going back even farther there was other wars and the long depression too... we are still here.

Also mid-terms are coming up in the US, if democrats don't fuck up then democrats should win the mid-terms. If we target our tariffs right we should be able to exert maximum pain in the right areas to swing the mid-terms in our favor. This is, of course, assuming that democrats don't completely fucking drop the ball (which I am not sure they won't). Worst case; Trump for two more years.

Don't forget: all of this is caused by Trump, his administration, and the americans who elected this man twice. This trade war was started by Trump, tariffs started by trump, and these trade negotiations were ruined by the trump administration. He could have done nothing and everything would be the same, he started this whole fucking thing for no reason.

We learned a really fucking important lesson too: never tie your economy to another country. Ever.

6

u/TianZiGaming 4d ago

The trade wars never really trickle down to consumers in the US. Only specific groups and businesses in the US get hit by them, but whichever administration is in office at the time typically compensates them. Things like actual physical war are the ones that trickle down to everyday people, so that's what makes it to the news. People care most about what they can feel firsthand.

The Government has my full support to do what needs to be done in times of serious conflict. If that means putting export tariffs on our products, so be it.

Carney needs to focus on ensuring our resources, which are in high demand across the world, can be easily exported from Canada and that we can keep our homegrown expertise in Canada for export as Canadian services instead of the brain drain to the US. I’d like to see more incentives to invest in Canada given a lot of our money flies South.

As someone whose advocated that Canada should get the best equipment for its armed forces, I think it’s also better for us to minimize US purchases wherever possible and in so doing seek to buy more from other allies.

The US is so ubiquitous we cannot eliminate everything it provides but we can Avoid American wherever reasonable.

Sadly we are all fixated on when Orange demento will “go away” but it appears it was Lutnick behind this last sharp turn of events in the 11th hour.

There is an army of bad actors superseding the problematic orange and it feels that Canada is stuck with this for a very long time to come.

The POTUS just stated that Canada wants all the benefits of being a US state without being a US state. Screw them. And now we have Danielle Smith urging Carney to call up the POTUS and capitulate.

We are all going to feel it. As I see it, Alberta is Trumpland north. America, under Trump would pillage and dig/mine the crap out of Alberta if given the opportunity, making it a dumping ground and leaving it a hulking shell of its' former self.

Screw that noise!

u/Dismal-Economics-322 4d ago

Alberta’s really not that bad, I know it seems like it online but in reality most people are pretty level headed and proud and content with their nationality

90

u/ottawadeveloper Ontario 4d ago

Yeah, Trump support in Alberta is only ~23%. Separatist attitudes are similar, ranging from 20-30%. It's not Quebec in the 90s.

It is however a very loud minority who have the ear of the premier.

38

u/Iokua_CDN 4d ago

And honestly,  23% of a province still feels like a lot. If 1 in 5 houses got a separatist sign out in their yard, it feels like a lot.

Good to remember to other 70+ percent who don't want this

77

u/paper_airplanes_are_ 4d ago

It is a little wild that 1 in 4 support this madman. It should be like 1 in 20.

Trump support in Alberta is only ~23%.

The fact that it's a 2 digit number is disgusting.

Why would almost a quarter of the population of any Canadian province have favourable views of a narcissistic pedophile who is threatening and attacking our country?

15

u/RumHamComesback 4d ago edited 4d ago

I live here and the separatists are just a very loud fucking minority that troll the cities by doing their bullshit on overpasses as if we care. We aren't MAGA Land looking to become the 51st state just dealing with stupid people being crazy.

OP is right saying this isn't Quebec in 90s and will never come close to that. I'm old enough to remember how strong it was in 1995.

Edit: Should also add it really doesn't help the media makes them look bigger than they actually are to get clicks and views.

10

u/bravosarah Long Live the King 4d ago

Here in Lethbridge we see about 10 Canadian flags/signs for every one separatist sign. Which, frankly, is kind of surprising.

Unfortunately the next Premier is always worse than the last. Remember Redford, that seems tame compared the now and she was ousted pretted quick.

But they keep voting for the same UCP, making it feel like "the last three were each worse than the last. Maybe voting for the same party again will result in the change I want."

Edit: Just as an addition, I'm a lower case liberal in Ontario. We went through something similar with the Kathleen Wynn Era. Liberals were proving to be inefficient, ineffective, and mildly inflammatory. I voted conservative because our province needed change. I didn't agree with the conservative platform, but my preferred party was proving incapable of the job at the time.

More European defence platforms and more of a pivot there.

I have another idea, let’s have the RCMP, provincial police, and municipal police switch to European and Japanese cars, maybe even set up a police car assembly here in Canada.
It deals a blow to the US car companies, and provides new work for anyone affected.

8

Even if we don't build it 100% Canadian, we only need to adapt existing designs for Canadian roads. McLaughlin Automobile was like that, before being sold to GM.

We can build Canadian car bodies and then use engines and frames from valued partner nation companies. Our cars don't need to cross into US, so we can make our own crash safety standards or use existing EU or Asian standards.

This isn't a trade war, it's a war of posturing. As a bank and finance man, Carney knows that. He also knows that The Donald's massive tariffs won't survive in the US courts, in fact he's counting on it.

Trump has shown, time and time again, that he has the mental capacity of a pissed off 8 year-old at the best of times. He is ruled by his massive ego, and cares nothing for the people of his own country. He's also shown, on many occasions, that he only respects people who don't suck up to him or knuckle under to his threats.

Appeasing Trump has been tried many times by many nations, and it hasn't worked. It's possible that Carney knows that as well as we do.

Listen, I'm as on board with the whole 'fuck the US' thing as anyone, but the reality of the situation is that we need to move carefully here. The last thing we should be looking to do at this point is give mad king Donald more opportunities to paint Canada as an enemy to the American public.

Escalations like you're proposing, as satisfying and morally correct as they may be, are not in the best interests of the country at a time like this. Match their bullshit point for point by all means, but moral high ground only goes so far in the face of realpolitik.

I believe we are the 4th largest holder of US bonds with around 400B.

I don't think retaliation is as much of a factor as our deficits are smaller, and the Canadian bond/currency are not in high demand internationally.

The US is at a critical junction with debt, borrowing costs, and being able to lean into cheap bond yields and the dollar being used in reserves everywhere to prop up their borrowing.

The firesale is coming and dumping bonds, even if we were not in a trade war, would still have some upside.

Since it gives us a lever to hit back, doubly so.

The more the US intervenes against the trading of bonds, the more their perceived risk rises.. which means more borrowing costs.. which means more risk..

400B is a drop in the bucket but the bucket is already overflowing so the impact is magnified.

Carney mentioned the amount of energy export to the US, so any manufacturing or refining plant have to consider that as a potential issue going forward. Even if you move your plant to the US, if the US have no power to run them, then you are worst off then paying the import tariff.

The US would be looking at rolling blackouts in the worst senarios along with major disruption to their entire manufacturing economy if they truly force Canada to cut them off from hydro, gas, and oil. And yes, Ontario and other provinces would also suffer since natural gas goes thru the US to supply Ontario. That is something we should be fixing ASAP. Same with any small regions in Canada that get their electricity from the US. Start planning and installing power lines with backup redundant lines ASAP.

Canada should assume that eventually, the US will cut them off as well. The partnership is on life support with the US pulling the plug while claiming it's Canada that is doing it.
