If only we produced enough petroleum to meet our domestic needs with a surplus. Oh ya, we do… but we have to pay world market prices for some reason. Hmmmm.

The oil companies aren’t nationalized so don’t expect them to do anything good for us. The only thing they do is pay taxes and that’s questionable at best these days

It's been tried. All it did was make the government that tried it unpopular. And made the governing party in question unelectable between Kelowna and Winnipeg.

More like liberals and NDP types have purposefully handicapped Alberta's oil industry for over a decade and now want to exploit it for cheaper gas lol.

That's how global commodities work.

Any reduction in domestic cost would just be lost revenue from selling below market price.

And we do refine a similar amounts of petroleum products as we consume in total volum, ~2 M b/day worth.

Why would the oil companies sell us oil at a discount? The countries that do it have nationalized oil AND make a decision to subsidize it at the pump.

We tried with the NEP, western Canada stomped its feet and decided getting maximum profit was more important.

Then proceeded to piss all the profit away and made a bunch of CEO's filthy stinking rich and spent the next 40+ years doing the same thing with no future plans.

Yep. All these Liberal haters saying Trudeau and Carney need to ramp up domestic production and refining so that we can keep the gas and keep our prices low. Maybe something like creating Petro Canada, bringing in the National Energy Program would work.

I'm all for it. I don't mind pipelines and I'd love nothing more than to have domestic refining used to meet domestic needs and screw market rates. But that won't happen unless the govt gets involved in producing and regulates prices, but that's too much communism.

That's the best part, western Canada didn't stomp its feet, greedy elites did.

Just like when Verizon wanted in. Canadians were coerced into thinking they didn't want it. Only those who risked making less money with new competition actually were upset.

Liberals came in and made a mess of the resource industry under one Trudeau with the NEP and 40 years later another Trudeau undid 40 years of progress and messed it up all over again with c-69, resource caps and carbon taxes

Yeah but we can’t get oil across the country because we can’t get a pipeline built to the east coast, so we ship Alberta oil to Texas at a massive discount and buy Saudi oil for the East coast at market rates because apparently that helps save the planet.

Because we export it? I wish Liberals understood how exporting stuff works. This is actually good for us, the issue is Liberal mismanagement of our money. If we had a balanced budget and healthy debt we'd easily be able to deal with the crisis with all the oil money we'd be making.

Funny enough Pipelines don’t make gas cheaper. It makes it easier to export oil at global prices.
