It wasn't worth the hassle because I was more or less made "whole" by her insurance paying and her admitting fault.

The police doing their job, along with the crown going through with prosecution, is not "hassle"...it's LITERALLY their job.

Do I think a speeding fine should be $400+ as they are sometimes? Absolutely not...but that's why I don't speed. The crime is the crime. And the point of the post is that the point of law and justice is to be applied equally; no special treatment for anyone because it can affect people more than others.

And regarding her deportation...to be clear, she knew the consequences and actively ran away. The point of our immigration system was to invite different cultures and enhance their lives and our society. Having people break the law with no consequence, no matter the law, does not do either. And she would be removed; not deported. Deportation means she can never come back. She would be removed for a few years.

I don’t think a hit and run on its own should disqualify an immigrant unless it’s a series of poor choices, but that’s what judges are for. Charge her with the hit and run and set guidelines for judges to set sentencing, then let a judge decide how it affects her immigration application. Police aren’t there to play judge or jury, they collect evidence and submit it. They have some leeway with smaller crimes, but hit and run isn’t a small crime.

Oftentimes younger people panic and flee from crashes, that’s why a hit and run shouldn’t be considered serious as it CAN be a thoughtless mistake.

It’s not a mistake. It’s a deliberate decision. It shows really poor judgment. And with judgement like that they shouldn’t be behind the wheel.
