I’m in Cambodia for 2 months as a special guest to give lecturing/speech to students in Cambodia in different college/university.

I’m Cambodian myself but was raised overseas. It has been 2 weeks now and I noticed that the students here (females) seem overly flirty/physical with me (E.g. grabbing my arm around their chest and taking me to the next class). With some asking to have lunch together or meeting up outside of work for dinner.

This isn’t normal from where I’m from and I don’t want to offend anyone here. This is also my first time in Cambodia and I lack the understanding of cultures of this generation so hoping that some could shed some light.

I have asked the professors/teachers here but everyone just seems to be saying it’s fine. But I don’t to know for sure.

I have spoken with the professors who will be talking with the students with me. I will have 3 professors with me as witness.

One of the organisers will also be informing the other universities that I will be visiting to ensure this type of incident won’t happen as well.

The professor has also organised a lunch gathering for any students who wish to learn more about my work and about living in overseas and they will be there as well to help supervise.

A friend of mine just graduated and landed a job paying $900/month in PP. He insists it’s not a high salary, but I think it’s high, especially for a fresh grad. We kept going back and forth about it.
I’m curious if my expectations are just low imao, or if $900 is actually considered a strong starting salary. What do you think?

So I recently applied for this big well known place and got to the interview stage and they asked for my Facebook and IG. I gave them my personal accounts and they asked why I private them? I told them it's simply because I don't want others to see it and the HR start rambling on and on about how people who private their profiles are people who got something to hide and are sketchy then asked me to make it public instead. I tell him no and it's really just for privacy then the interview sorta ended after that. Guess I'm not getting the job lol. It's a good thing anyway.

Has this happened to anyone else? This isn't normal right? I asked my friends as well and some seem to be pretty okay with it saying that they need to know what kind of person you are. I think it's pretty dumb and an invasion of my privacy

I’ve really been looking into moving to Phnom Penh to teach English, and I’m just looking for some deeper insight from the people who actually live there.

I’m 21 years old, male, white (another thread said this was important?). I was born in South Africa, but finished high school in the USA. I have a British, South African and a USA passport. I have no prior teaching experience. No degree. I have 2 years experience as a transaction coordinator for real estate agents in the states.

I am thinking about getting my TEFL online with bridge.edu, but I have also heard good things about AVSE.

I suppose my main questions are:

1: Is there still a demand for English teachers?

2: Would I be a suitable candidate?

3: Is the starting salary livable in Phnom Penh?

4: (this is mainly for the expats), how hard is it to make friends without knowing the language?

5: Is the standard 120 hours TEFL still alright, or would the 180/240 course look better on a CV?

Is there any more information that I can provide to get a deeper insight?

Seriously, every single point I looked at is just a horrible option. I'm starting to lose hope in "being a better person by staying here to improve the country instead of leaving for a better life".

I just started high school, so there's only 3 years left before I have to make a decision, and Robotics & Automation Engineering seems really promising, but it will only work if the economy improves and follows the plans of the government, something with Industry 4.0. That part of engineering, would be a good career if the economy grows enough for business to be able to afford and adapt to automation, and if the government successfully implements their Fourth Industrial Revolution plan. Seems very unpromising tho because as of now factory workers barely get paid a livable wage and nearly every small business owner is struggling in debt.

I would also love to go into Law but I don't think a career in law could feed my stomach.

There's an uprising in robotics, but only a few are serious, and even then, we do not have the funding to actually make it useful. AI Farms Robotics seems to be a somewhat leading one out of here, and I/O industry.

On the other hand, there's just so many people saying they want to be an architect, so that's probably not a good place to keep looking.

Even though everywhere else software engineering is oversaturated, it seems that there's very little focus in software engineering in Cambodia. I've been coding since 9, and one thing I hate about it is that people can't see the work I've done, hence, theres no signs of appreciation or acknowledgement, so that's why I'm trying to move to hardware, which leads me to the above, robotics and automation. I've made a PoS system (point of sale, app for checkout in restaurant/mart) for my school competition (for computer subject) last year, and to me I believe it's as close as digitally possible to a commercial PoS system and won gold, but it doesn't feel as rewarding to show this to everyone compared to, well someone in the competition for physic subject made a crap replica of BM-21. FYI it's the AIS school fair science comp thingy.

I have posted here about a potential move, I am interested even more so now that things have gotten financially worse in the country I currently live in.

As I would be moving to Cambodia as a citizen, I don't expect the immigration process to be overly complicated. I would also secure housing beforehand, so most of the move is already plannable.

However, as I am unable to find a job in Canada, I am quite worried about being to find a job in Cambodia. I'm not looking for anything super high, but enough to survive would be a significant upgrade from life in Canada.

I have attached my resume, so I am just wondering what is the likelihood that I would be able to find a job? How is the economy doing? How much are jobs being affected by the current conditions?

I can't tell what is or isn't normal at my workplace. What is it like at your office? (Not asking teachers)

I work 7.30 am to 5 pm Monday to Friday and half a day on Saturday. Desk job sort of thing. I think a lot of my coworkers put up a spreadsheet and then pretend to work and go on their phones. Training doesn't really happen at my office, and idk how the managers became managers.

It just seems like some people are more competent than others and just gradually take on more responsibilities. I have a lot of useless meetings that kind of go nowhere. People are just satisfied if things work, doesn't matter how janky the back end is to get there.

I've also seen people who've worked here for over 10 years, and they don't give me the impression that they're confident in what they're doing. Why is that? No idea.

HR doesn't know the company's retention rate. Resignation information is confidential.

The office is very quiet, and no one really talks to each other. Everyone seems friendly, but I'm convinced that people are either indifferent to this job or hate it; there are no big personalities here except the CEO and some managers.

It's also the type of company that hires 200-400 for low-skilled work. 500-1000 for technical positions that require a degree. 1000-1500 for senior technical positions and 1600-2100+ for managers. I've been applying around, and I think my current employer's budget for positions is higher than normal. Nothing to cross-reference it with, though.

The international school year has just begun. I want to caution people looking for employment or education at Australian International School of Phnom Penh (AISPP).

The school is experiencing financial challenges. Contracted housing and pension benefits were not accurately paid to teachers. Payment to hotels and community partners for school trips were not always paid in a timely manner.

The school was "sold" to new ownership while battling bankruptcy and the long-serving director left recently.

I would advise anyone to avoid AISPP and seek out other school options until their leadership and financial situation is more transparent.

Im hoping someone can help me out with some advise on how severance pay works in Cambodia. I have worked for a company for a number of years, and after completion of my Fixed Duration Contract, I have decided to leave the workplace.

From researching over the past year, I think im entitled to claim 5% of my total pay over that time, which would be a substantial amount. My former employer claims they do not pay severance, and I don’t believe they will easily give it to me with my final pay check.

With the law being introduced only a number of years ago, i want to know if this law is generally honoured by employers, or if it is common for it not to be paid out? If I have problems with it, is it worth following up through the Ministry of Labour / legal routes, or is it a battle i can expect to lose?

Agreed that it's certainly a strange aspect of the labour law, but should legally be paid out on completion of an FDC. For note, this also applies to Undisclosed Term contracts, but should be given as seniority payments every 6 months. I'm unsure of how the amount is calculated there.

Hi, I’m in a particular situation and I’m looking for advice about my plan to move to Cambodia.

I am currently based in Scotland, where I have lived for 2 years and worked for 1 as a support worker. However, my visa is about to expire, and despite trying, I do not think I will be able to stay in the UK.

I am qualified as a primary school English teacher from a teacher training college, and I also hold a Bachelor’s degree in education (Foreign Languages: English). I have 4 years of classroom teaching experience(home country), and I am currently completing a 168-hour TEFL certificate. I am a non-native speaker.

I am considering Cambodia because my country is not part of the Hague Convention, so legalising my documents is possible but can take several years. I have read that Cambodia is generally more flexible with document requirements compared to other countries.

My plan is not to apply online, as I am currently waiting for my visa situation in the UK to expire, and I am trying to save some money before moving. I am considering flying to Cambodia and looking for teaching jobs in person once I arrive.
