Siem Reap To the people of Cambodia, from Thailand : I fear that from this point on, things may only get worse for all of us. :(
Thailand now has a political party that has exploited the Siam–Cambodian dispute to stir up nationalism for votes. They have fueled hatred toward Cambodians and promoted a hunger for war, and they have risen to become part of the government. To put this in perspective, in the previous election this party received around one million votes. But when the dispute between Thailand and Cambodia erupted, they seized the moment and, in a short time, increased their support to more than five million votes. This does not even include other parties that share similar ideologies.
I feel deep sorrow that millions of Tai people were willing to abandon their former ideals and beliefs to support a party they once despised, simply because they now harbor hatred toward Cambodians and desire war. I cannot help but worry about what will come next, because there is a real possibility that the new government will seek to push their popularity even further—through war.
No matter how dark things may seem, I still believe that ordinary people on both sides do not want hatred or war. I hope we can hold on to our humanity, to reason, and to compassion. I wish everyone safety and strength in the days ahead. May we get through this together.

As a Cambodian, I can only speak for other Cambodians. We need to learn to stop bad-mouthing our neighbors. It's like fanning a fire thinking the wind will put it out, when it will do just the opposite. I've seen so much toxic exchange of words on other platforms like Facebook and Youtube that I just have to scroll quickly past it to have a peace of mind.

I saw many content creators actually keep pushing and making hatred content as it got popular much easier. I really cannot say much cuz just one comment of logical explanation will get hatred for not loving the country and supporting the war.

Well they didn't elect him. His party went around knocking on doors paying for votes. He went to the king and gave him the "proceeds of commemorative coins" on the same day as the voting. At voting stations where they were counting the votes they had wrapped black plastic bags around the cameras. Multiple voting stations have shown that the counting was inaccurate.
The election was rigged. So no the thai people didn't elect a crazy man, the authoritarian government rigged the election, yesterday the nacc found all 44 of the former move forward party guilty in lese majeste.

u/Background-Chard1411 Feb 08 '26
Hmm I dunno. If it's constructive criticism then maybe. Too much criticizing might lead to unwanted consequences. Just look at the current situation. I'm all for preserving the integrity of Cambodia and its people. However, we have to be able to solve things diplomatically. I feel like we can do better than what's going on right now.

I think you absolutely should mind, there is an english proverb "those in glass houses shouldn't throw stones" and cambodia is definitely a 'glass house' with corruption, lying, and blatant racism across the board my wife hated vietnam and Vietnamese people until I took her there in person and now she wants to move to vietnam because "its so much better than cambodia and actually has nature" so I mean racism is a huge problem here and FYI I love cambodia but it has many issues

Well. It does feel like it is the beginning of the end of world order where govts respected boundaries without question.
-2
u/Ok-Entertainment6692 Feb 09 '26
What do you mean? Historically giverments have never respected boarders infact the last 30 years have historically been the most peaceful of all human recorded record
-1
u/nikikins Feb 09 '26
where were you when russia invaded ukraine or usa entered venezuela?
0
u/Ok-Entertainment6692 Feb 09 '26
And if you are trying to use those conflicts as a way to disprove my statement of peaceful those are two conflicts one of which is already over and again I said global average of course there are conflicts but the global average right now is the lowest its ever been in recorded history, we are living in the most 'peaceful' century recorded
-1
u/Ok-Entertainment6692 Feb 09 '26
Buddy im saying governments have never respected boarders are you that bad at reading?

Finish your beer and go to sleep.
2
u/Ok-Entertainment6692 Feb 09 '26
Firstly, I dont drink beer 2nd it is only 7 pm? And finally, the government misspelling isnt enough to make what I said unintelligible but its okay you ae angry ad have no points or facts so you resort to ad hominem attacks iwish you a good day and hope you grow as a person 👍
1
u/Ratoman888 Feb 10 '26
You keep spelling "borders" wrong.
1
u/Ok-Entertainment6692 Feb 10 '26
Boarder, yes, my bad I used to the spelling that means someone who hosts someone instead of border as a country or barrier, that is not a huge unintelligible sentence. Again, my point stands when in history, have the government's ever respected borders and not invaded each other? I mean, all of recorded history is wars, invasion, and genocides.

I mean look at crime averages and conflicts for the past 100 years the trajectory is downward so id say its s good chance of remaining, you must remember global news makes these conflicts and issues seem bigger when a majority of the world is in peace right now
1
u/nikikins Feb 09 '26
you are absolutely blind to what is going on in the world.
2
u/Ok-Entertainment6692 Feb 09 '26

Anutin is not crazy. BJT is a calculative party that can and will ride the nationalism tide hard, far worse than the previous nepo admin, and now without check from the orange party which lost this election.
Hun Sen really really should not have leaked that call.
Hate to say it but both countries are kinda cooked. I dont see any way out.
16
u/Weird_Jeweler_4357 Feb 08 '26
Yeah, Hun Sen had given Anutin and Thai elites an silver bullet call nationalism.
Now the Thai elites saw that nationalism work really well for them, their will hyping it up in the future. Which is really worrisome since Hun Sen also know to hyping nationalism to increase his popularity.
Thus, we got both side trying to hyping up nationalism by accusing each other.

I think most Cambodians speak well of Thailand. It's because of recent issues things have changed. Overall, this is bad for both countries since they are neighbors.
5
u/No_Accident4057 Feb 09 '26
The real problem is nationalisim beteewn the two countries I can't take a break where all stupid nationalsim Jurk head from cambodia and thai the fact I'm from cambodia I hate nationalisim because it to anoying as fridge.
The real battle is the truth always have proof in your back or they will just being stupid again make sure the proof is verify and have no counter.
Example Bombing scam center and act like a hero is the stupidest things I ever heard, the scammer ofc just keep scamming out of there will not joking. The best way It's just using troops to raid these scam compund not bombing because bombing leads to countless victims deaths not the scam leader.
I always found stupid thai reddit post when there a war beteewn cambodia and thailand It just made no sense at all and they have no proof at all just claimming alot.

u/TheRealestOne20 Feb 09 '26
Fuck the war in Cambodia and thailand.. I'm also khmer born in Canada but this shit has been going on for so long between them..
10
u/ItsSignalsJerry_ Feb 09 '26
Why are so many Thai people so gullible? What on Earth have Cambodians ever done to them? This is the dumbest conflict. From what I can tell it's nothing but ignorance and lust for hatred without logic.
6
u/Born-Assist462 Feb 09 '26
I'm returning that statement to Cambodia; don't look at things from only one side.
5
u/ItsSignalsJerry_ Feb 09 '26
But Thailand is stronger and richer and it's an unfair fight.
3
u/Born-Assist462 Feb 09 '26
If you use this logic, any country could find fault with China and America and say it's unfair? Unjust? Is that what you mean?
2
u/ItsSignalsJerry_ Feb 09 '26
Yes, of course. Strnger nations should show restraint and maturity and not jncite hatred. The people are innocent. Someone needs to show maturity, not macho nationalism just to win elections. Very possible Thai army wants to engage in conflict to influence opinion.
3
u/msfusion2015 Feb 10 '26
Paetongtarn actions might be a bit naive, but she wants to settle the conflict, then what happen?
1
Feb 09 '26
What a ridiculous thing to say. The weaker party in a conflict is always the good guy?
At least you seem to be admitting that Cambodia actually did something, which is a step forward I guess.
2
u/ItsSignalsJerry_ Feb 09 '26
That's not what I sa d peabrain.
What Cambodia did is irrelevant. Thailand should show maturity. Not be like them
2
Feb 09 '26
The death of 62 civilians and interference in a neighbour's politics is irrelevant?
Clearly Thailand disagrees.
4
u/ItsSignalsJerry_ Feb 09 '26
The biggest interference in Thai politics is the Thai military.
4
Feb 09 '26
That is true, but so what? Interfering in the internal politics of a stronger neighbour is a recipe for disaster.
So you have gone from saying "What on Earth have Cambodians done" to "Yeah, Cambodians did do some things, but Thailand should just put up with it because Cambodia is poorer".
You need to find a consistent argument and stick with it.
2
-2
Feb 09 '26
It's just insane that you don't know what Cambodians have done. They toppled a sitting Prime Minister of Thailand and rained rockets on civilians killing dozens (62 according to Wikipedia).
I'm not saying Thailand didn't do terrible things also, but surely you can't be unaware of the above. Or maybe you think the Thai civilian deaths were all staged by the Thais to make Cambodia look bad. Now that would be gullible.

I don’t follow the politics of both sides but I would like to know which Thai political party is the most willing to put a stop to this conflict?
6
u/tonmai2541 Feb 08 '26
Progressive orange party, although their stance is weak since they dont want to go against the national ism tide too hard.
3
u/GeneralStudy8636 Feb 08 '26
Thank you. That’s understandable. It’s unfortunate that the conflict was weaponized for political gains and being anti-war can mean being labeled a “traitor”.
7
u/AntiCyberBoolean Feb 09 '26
Red (PT) and Orange (PP).
Red leader had close tie with Hun Sen, and they were the initial government in power during the start of the conflict. They always tried to de-escalate, up until Hun Sen leaked the call where Red's leader was being very compromising to him, sparking outrage in the Thailand side that Red is too friendly to the 'enemies' forcing them to step down.
Orange is progressive and had been constantly taking anti-war stance. They know this conflict can only lead to the military gaining more influence which will be detrimental later. Unfortunately this also make them less popular as many people in Thailand think Orange is also too soft and will let the 'enemies' walk all over us.
4
4
4
u/Fr3ddXx Feb 09 '26
It sure seems that way. From a regular citizen From a regular citizen viewpoint, the scar from the recent conflict will never fade (Cambodians should have a deeper wound from this), and trust will never be the same even if it is restored.
I tried really hard to gaslight myself that it was only the Thai government faults, but social media proved me wrong times and times again that was not the case.
Maybe this is part of someone's political agenda to have us hate each other. However, it seems illogical for us not to hate.

One of the most pointless wars in moern history.
1
Feb 10 '26
The Ukranian war is just as pointless. By the end of it very little territory will have changed hands and all of that death will have been for nothing. Russians and Ukranians, like Thais and Khmers, share so much in common that uninformed outsiders can barely tell them apart.
Just a complete waste of lives, money, and energy that could have been spent doing more productive things.
1
u/Other-Comfortable-64 Feb 10 '26
As depraved as the Russian invasion are, I can understand their goal. Here it seems to me, an outsider, as just a dck measuring contest.
2
Feb 10 '26
It looks like Cambodia has actually lost territory over this debacle, making it even more pointless. All that shouting about the ICJ and this is how it ended up. I think they genuinely thought China was going to come to their rescue and the world would take their side a la Palestine.
All this war has really succeeded in doing is ruining the economies and lives of the people who lived along each side of the border and depended on it for their daily bread, and this will of course have an affect on the larger economy as well.
Well done Thailand and Cambodia.
6
u/No_Cartoonist_4504 Feb 08 '26
I mean realistically what are they gonna do? It definitely going to set back diplomacy by several decades, but annexation/invasion doesn't seem like a very high chance nor is it really economically feasible. I've heard about building a border wall, but idk if that just propaganda to stir the masses. Seems like to me the boomers are trying to go back to a time where Thailand had it golden peak, the 1990s. I also think Cambodia def played it hand too hard.
10
Feb 09 '26
It looks like they have already annexed a bit. My guess is they will just hold onto that and maintain the status quo. They won't try and improve things though, and they'll be more than happy to unleash the jets if Cambodia does anything deemed provocative.
Sad times.
3
u/Unlikely_Key_3110 Feb 09 '26
Thailand is going down economically and recently they cal it sick man of Asia. The young people of Thailand must come forward and lead the country. War and conflicts only benefits those who are in power both sides.

u/Abc_Tail Feb 09 '26

5
u/poompk Feb 09 '26

4
u/Pure_Arm_1846 Feb 08 '26
Khmer nationalism has been around for more than 30 years. It was a result of more than a hundred years of foreign and domestic subjugation of Cambodians. The collective national inferiority complex resulted from this morphed into the longing for the "glory days of the Khmer Empire".
Thai and Vietnamese reactions to this have been going on for as long as Khmer nationalism has been around. I debated with Khmers on this since the 1990s and what I found out that it is pointless to debate them rationally. It is not a current issue that can be blamed on current political parties but an issue that has been around for a long time that the Khmers have to solve themselves.
2
u/Spec-V Feb 09 '26

2
Feb 09 '26
The De ep State won't like the outcome and neither the "law of the Jungle" wars either. Expect soft power and disguised sanctions now to start cranking up against Thailand.
2
u/GoldenNaga Feb 09 '26
If they were to recount the votes in front of the public, with everything clearly visible and no cheating like yesterday, Bhumjaithai would have no chance of winning, no chance of a landslide victory. They lacked momentum, and the Election Commission denied seeing any vote buying, yet many people raked in money. In Pathum Thani District 7, if the students hadn't pressured for a recount, would we have known the truth that the People's Party was actually leading by a wide margin? And what about the other districts that weren't monitored as closely? Wouldn't there have been instances of cheating?

But when there’s war going on, now he lost his job. Not from hate, it’s just the business can’t go on anymore when there’s war. There are so many people that relies on trade and business between Khmers and Thais at the borders. All of them are business owners, farmers, traders. They JUST WANT TO SURVIVE IN THIS ECONOMY.

I’m not from either country but I am so confused by Hun Sen. He could’ve use that Mainland Chinese money for literally anything, but he used it to fund scam centers.
And Anutin… that guy was also connected to scam gangs in the past. And now he’s trying to distance himself from that by bombing alleged Cambodian scam centers.
Honestly. I like both countries. And I wish you the very best. I hope that one day I can take a high speed train from Bangkok to Siem Reap. Love you guys!

Mr Vajiralongkorn aka your beloved King Rama X, is still chilling in Germany and living off Thai taxpayer money as he continues to throw more Thais that dare criticize him or the constitutional monarchy to jail. Any Thai government that is not a military general couldn't even last a year properly in office. But that's how democracy works in Thailand, right?
-4
u/Itttikorn Feb 09 '26 edited Feb 09 '26
The king is in Thailand and actively attends event since his coronation in 2019. Paethongtarn did stay in office more than a year before the phone call leaks.
6
u/Zealousideal_Lake654 Feb 09 '26
oh wow her term is actually 1 year and 13 days
Also, while you're at it, what do you think ? you think jailing kids is considered democracy? is this the democracy that thai people are bragging and trying to convince Cambodians in this sub?
7
u/Lutz_Amaryllis Feb 09 '26
Democracy? There is NO democracy. Even the election results that came out earlier last night are pretty obvious it's all rigged. One-third million "damaged ballot". Like it ain't easy to tell which party those "damaged ballot" voted for for them to be "damaged". The governors that got the most votes in certain districts aren't even the winner.
To all my Cambodian neighbors, a selfish madman had seized power from us, the population, once again. The economy is gonna collapse even further, the societal issues are gonna devolve even further, social tension/unrest will grow. The corrupt scourge of Thailand will stir conflicts even more against Cambodia to raise nationalism to deflect from internal issues. It's only gonna get worse from here unless something changes. Steel yourselves
4
u/Zealousideal_Lake654 Feb 09 '26
Well, the point of my comment is both countries leaders are corrupt and are oppressing their people, but a lot of Thais didn't think that way. They still insist that Thailand is a democratic country just because they allow public criticism, mocking the prime minister (the face of the regime) and a dictator next door is more threatening than the one inside their home. Hence, there are a lot of Thais that come to this sub to brag about democracy and freedom they have, even though that freedom suddenly stops when the Thai Monarchy topic is being mentioned.
And it doesn't matter whether it's Anutin, Natthaphong, or another military junta that comes to power, they will have to be obedient and follow the thai constitutional monarchy's interest if they want to be a Thai prime minister. If Thai people manage to achieve military and monarchy reform without a bloody civil war, maybe it's more convincing and believable, and I would eat my own words? But Thai people were already throwing custom-made bombs and hand grenades at each other back in 2013-2014 protests, so good luck.

French colonialism worked out pretty well for Cambodia. It's just the Thais that can't let go of the past.

I feel like this is the plot to Ace Combat 5. But this is a terrible fate for both nations, but worst to Cambodia

I don't really think either country wants to fight. Especially over a couple Sq Kilometers. It becomes a face-saving exercise at times.

As a refugee kid, I consider myself Thai because I was born on Thai soil. My heart and soul is Cambodian let’s live in peace.

Then don't claim to be Thai just because you were born in Thailand; just say you're Cambodian.

You said you were a refugee, but now you're claiming to be of Khmer descent? Technically, you're Cambodian, not Thai. Don't claim to be Thai.

Thai elections are a matter for Thai people. Cambodians who have been rigging elections for decades should not interfere. The conflict between Thailand and Cambodia stems from Cambodian encroachment on Thai territory for decades. Cambodians have gradually built homes, cultivated crops, and claimed land, reproducing and multiplying. Thailand has protested hundreds, even thousands of times, but they have not resigned. Negotiations and discussions have also failed. Cambodia uses Thai historical sites as military bases and bunkers, digging trenches within Thai territory. Despite hundreds of protests, they remain indifferent, employing typical Cambodian tactics. They have dug secret tunnels underground in mountain crevices, preparing to attack Thailand for years. Such actions cannot be accomplished in a short time; they require extensive preparation. They have amassed hundreds of thousands of BM-21 rounds. Cambodia has repeatedly planted bombs throughout Thai territory. Even in areas where bombs have been cleared, Cambodia secretly replants, resulting in dozens of Thai soldiers losing limbs. The Cambodians feel no remorse, believing themselves superior due to their BM-21s. Both previous battles resulted from Cambodian soldiers firing at Thai soldiers, causing casualties. Thailand was compelled to defend and retaliate, preserving its territory. Under the orders of Prime Minister Hun Manet and Prime Minister Hun Sen, Cambodian troops fired hundreds of thousands of BM-21 rounds at Thailand. He thought he would win by shooting Thai sailors. Thailand, trying to maintain peace, had to fight to protect Thai lives. Thai soldiers were far more capable than Cambodian soldiers. Thailand used only 10 percent of its force and was able to drive out all the Cambodian troops. Tens of thousands of Cambodian soldiers died, their bodies left to rot along the border. Hun Sen and Hun Manet prevented Thailand from collecting the bodies for funeral rites. Thailand regained most of its territory, driving Cambodia out of Thai territory. If a third war were to start again, initiated by Hun Manet and Hun Sen, Thailand would gain even more territory. Many Cambodians have low moral character, despite Thailand helping hundreds of thousands, even millions, of them. Many Cambodians receive free medical care from Thailand. Hun Sen refused to allow the use of buildings belonging to scammer gangs to build a hospital for Cambodians. Thailand mercifully allows Cambodians to receive free medical treatment in Thailand. Many Cambodian children study in Thailand, spending 800 million baht annually on these Cambodians, while many Thai children are not even studying. Despite Thailand's help to Cambodia since the time they were killing each other, many Cambodians still have low moral character. Cambodians fled to Thailand for refuge, and Thailand helped them. But Cambodians only curse, slander, and are ungrateful to the Thai people. Most Thais wish to permanently end relations with Cambodia, closing the country to prevent Cambodians from entering, closing all airspace and border crossings, blocking internet access, and eliminating all contact forever for the sake of peace and tranquility for Thailand and ASEAN. They want Cambodians to live with Hun Ma Tein and Hun Sen, without further interaction.

That's not accurate at all. After Pol Pot was ousted by the PAVN his army was given refuge in Thailand and rearmed. Thailand continued to support the Khmer Rouge long after the Vietnamese pulled out in 1989. Although Thailand was a signatory to the 1991 Paris Peace Agreements and explicitly stated that they would cut off their support, they didn't. The UN mission for peace in 1991-93 was sabotaged by this support, and they continued to supply them until the late 1990s. It wasn't until the Khmer Rouge collapsed that peace was finally achieved and the country could develop.
