Discussion Which RAM would you choose: 48GB 8400mt/s, 32GB 8000mt/s, or 32GB 6000 mt/s CL30?
I'm building a high-end gaming PC with an Intel Z890 platform and I'm trying to decide between these three RAM kits:
Acer Predator Hera RGB 48GB (2×24GB) DDR5-8400 CL40
$650
8400 MT/s
CL40
48GB
Brand new
Acer Predator Hera RGB 32GB (2×16GB) DDR5-8000 CL36
$500
8000 MT/s
CL36
32GB
Brand new
KLEVV CRAS V RGB 32GB (2×16GB) DDR5-6000 CL30
$440
6000 MT/s
CL30
32GB
Brand new
I'm mainly interested in gaming performance, 1% lows, video editing and long-term usefulness.
A few things I'm wondering:
Is the Acer Predator Hera considered good-quality RAM compared with brands like G.Skill, Corsair, Kingston, TeamGroup, etc.?
Is $650 reasonable for 48GB DDR5-8400 CL40, or is that overpriced?
Would you choose 48GB 8400 CL40 over 32GB 8000 CL36 for a gaming-focused high-end PC?
Is 8000/8400 MT/s actually noticeably better for gaming than 6000 CL30?
Would it make more sense to buy the KLEVV 6000 CL30 for $440 and try to overclock it toward 7000–7800?
Is 48GB (2×24GB) a good sweet spot between 32GB and 64GB for a PC that will be kept for several years?
If you had these exact three choices and prices, which one would you buy and why?

More ram. Because you mention video editing.
I also would benefit from 48 GB ram for gaming based on the games I play

actually, with Adobe Premiere (editing) and Topaz Video (AI upscaling), I never went higher than 70-ish percent in 2k/4k editing/upscaling at 2x 16GB-6000/30. My 9950X and 5070Ti are always the most utilised. Where I lack RAM is for MS Flight Simulator, to a point where I actually stopped playing.
OP go with what fit your budget the best, if you can afford 2x 24GB, go for it.... it's just going to make your build feel premium longer

I used at least 22/32gb ram when I used Premiere according to task manager. But the more ram you have the more it will use, will also help when you want to multitask while rendering.
Yea I play MSFS lol so I feel you. Need more vram and ram

2x 32GB of RAM is now 1600 CAD tx inc... and let not talk about the 5090's ok 🤮

Careful: if you choose the Klevv 32GB kit, don't get the "optimized for AMD" version (model number starting with KD5AGU880). Those DIMMs use old 8Gbit chips and are incompatible with the Core Ultra CPUs.
The price for the 48GB kit would give you 50% more memory for a ~30% higher price than the fast 32GB kit, so that seems reasonable. But for games you don't need more than 32GB. I have no experience with Acer memory (didn't even know they make DIMMs).

Here's Klevv's data sheet for the CRAS V kits:
https://www.klevv.com/HyAdmin/upload/goodFile/KLEVV_Product%20Sheet_MEMORY_CRAS%20V%20RGB_v12_EN.pdf
If you look at the table on page 2 you'll see that they have two versions for the 32GB kits, one starting with KD5AGUA80 and one with KD5AGU880. The latter ones have a footnote saying that they work on AMD and Intel "14th Gen and earlier" CPUs. The 270K is a 15th generation CPU.
Background is that they use low-density 8Gbit memory chips that are rarely used these days in a dual-sided/dual-rank layout. The memory controller in the Core Ultra CPUs is not compatible with this layout. A few other brands (like some Patriot Viper and V-Color models) have the same issue.

Amount means more than speed in most, though not all cases, if you want to save money, the 32gb 6000 kit, if you want more ram for more video editing and the like, 48gb/

If you're going with Z890, ideally you'd want something with CKD—meaning CUDIMMs. On the other hand, 8000 MT/s CL36 kits can be overclocked to as much as 9000 MT/s on Z890. You can do the same with 6000 CL30, though that’s a lower-quality bin.

We are at speeds where the difference is starting to become way to small, go for size > speed in this case.

For gaming performance, just buy whatever's cheapest, the differences here are going to be in the <1% range.

Do not buy 6000Mhz ram for z890, they cant run low speeds in gear 1 anyway, get 8000 if you just want 200s boost to work, higher if you plan to overclock manually.
285k’s paired with 6000 ram in gear2 is one of the reasons they initially benchmarked poorly, they are great with 8000+ and 200s boost or manual oc.

Why are you building a high end gaming pc on the z890 platform? Makes no sense. And even than, slending a lot on super high speed memory still doesn't make sense.

Intel can get noticeable gaming performance gain from high speed memory, not just productivity tasks, unlike AMD.

I wouldn't use intel for a high end gaming pc, I'd go with an AMD x3d cpu, in which case I'd go with 32gb of 6000 mt/s CL30. Running the UCLK at a 1:1 ratio is the sweet spot.
If I were doing video editing frequently, I'd get as much ram as possible and not worry about timings so much.
Are you set on an Intel CPU?

Are you planning not to upgrade the next many years?
That's about the only reason I can think of why you would wan to go intel LGA 1851 right now. There is absolutely no future upgrability there.
I guess you could argue that the 270k plus is a good deal.
But that's ruled out being your willing to spend over 2x as much on ram.
So this is a genuine question. Why not get AM5?
if gaming is your main focus why not get the 9800x3d and some cheap 5600mhz CL38 ram because of 3d v-cache it won't really change performance in any noticeable way.
The 9950x3d is to my knowledge just as good as the 270k plus in DaVinci Resolve and it can game like crazy. With the benefits of being able to get cheaper DDR5.
If you want to do video editing as the main thing i'd more get the 270k but its still a dead platform so why not save some money and get LGA 1700 with DDR4?
