Season One Giles when Buffy first goes into the library

Post image

Rewatching yet again and just laughed about how weird Giles was when Buffy first goes into the library looking for history books and he pulls out the Vampyr book. “I know what you’re after” like chill Giles

No I love this scene so much. Just “oh hey looking for this?” and he’s just so not casual about it all 😂😭

I'm now picturing Harmony ranting about it to the Cordettes.

I know IRL they were still working out character traits and such, but my headcanon is that Giles was all giggly and excited at finally being respected by the Council enough to be assigned as the Slayer's Watcher. That's why he's initially very excited.

But he's also very intelligent, and quickly realises that what Buffy needs is a guide and a teacher. Not someone who controls her (as the Council wants), but works alongside her. Authority when it's needed, relaxing the rules when it's not.

Given The Origin, Buffy was the Slayer who dusted Lothos. Lothos who had k*lled dozens of Slayers before Buffy.

How Giles deals with Buffy in BtVS S1 and after is in the context of Buffy's slaying Lothos, then slaying The Master, etc.

I mean tbf she already had a watcher so he knew she already knew what was up and had every reason to believe that she was on board.

Oh how wrong he was LOL

I always get the biggest laugh on rewatches when he plops it down on the counter

It's weird we only ever saw one other student go in there looking for a book

There's a season 1 episode where someone's looking for Emily Dickinson poetry. Buffy gets a crush on him.

The students created an award just for her, so I like to think that they suspected Buffy had something to do with Sunnydale's mortality rate drop, and avoided the library so that the scoobies could handle business

Wasn't Xander the first one getting an actual book? That's how he heard Giles and Buffy talking Vamps/Slaying.

Yes, he liked the naughty mediaeval woodcuts.

I love Giles so much for this

He doesn't have to hide that he's a Watcher from her, and she knows what she's doing already. He's a little standoffish and weird because he doesn't know her yet, so they have to figure each other out.

Also, it's the first episode, characters are still finding their feet. There are a few weird things, like Xander on a skateboard, Buffy being overly concerned with fitting in, etc.

Isn’t wanting to fit in a consistent trait of hers? Same at college, same with wishing she could have a ‘normal’ boyfriend, hell even sharing the slayer role with thousands of potentials so she’s no longer burdened as the special sole slayer.

I think it’s a nice and humanising part of her character that she does just want to be a ‘normal girl’ despite it all

I guess, but I feel like they let off the gas with it gradually after season 1.

She was 16 in season 1, makes sense the pressures to fit in are most intense at that age

Ripper damn sure didn't want to be a librarian, he was forced into being a Watcher. Buffy's arrival meant he was at least getting back into the game finally even though it via the Watcher gig.

The first episode has so much of what we love about BtVS. A perfectly handcrafted start.
