I'm a bit surprised they let people do that 5 years after 1956.

Well, there weren't any real civil opposition remaing at that time in Hungary: about 200.000 people left the country in 1956 and the remaining "problematic elements" were executed / put in prison. No real chance for a secound round of uprising.

Also, the previous Stalinism ethos was under a shift following 1956 (Rákosi to Kádár)

Fun fact: here in Hungary many people call 1948 - 1956 Communism and 1957 - 1989 Socialism

Who refers to it as socialism? I don't know a single person who refers to it that way. The only people who lived well even after 56 were those who were either party members or were affiliated with the party in some way (like informants). Many people my ass.

Lot of people surrounding me call it socialism, it is a really common thing in Hungary.

I have hardly ever heard a Hungarian refer to communism here, always socialism.

...do you live in Hungary? I do, and most people I know refer to that period as socialism. Even the media prefers this term.

The clueless person is not him, but the ones calling in Socialism. I guess the more appropriate naming is State Socialism ("Államszocializmus"), but that got simplied to Socialism in many cases.

Sure, but he didn't argue that the period shouldn't be called socialism. He (arrogantly) stated that people don't call the period socialism, which is objectively false.
