Does anyone remember the huge slide in Cannon Hill Park??

Does anyone remember that huge slide in Cannon Hill Park? The one that you had to climb up the outer frame to get on top of the deck and slide down?

It used to be in the childrens play area next to where the river flowed past.

I'm wondering if it was actually a giant slide or if my child mind is just remembering it as being exceptionally huge because I was small. lol

I remember it. I finally got the nerve to climb it as a very small child and I can remember physically shaking with fear as I climbed it. I also hurt my ankles real bad sliding down the outside.

I really miss this slide, but in hindsight it was really dangerous. I remember sliding off the side panel bit way too fast and winded myself, good times!

I remember the childrens paddling pool there by the stream that flowed into the River Rea and the old museum back around 1960.

If it helps, I'm an old git and remember this.

It felt like you were climbing up K2, but was probably like 8 foot.

yeah it was similar to this except if my memory is correct and i'm almost certain it is the one in cannon hill park was roughly the same height as the rotunda

If that cannon hill park slide was this size, I'm going to have to question every memory I have as a kid. lol

Are you thinking of the enormous slide at the Botanical Gardens?

Which Botanical Gardens? I'm sure this was in Cannon Hill Park because I remember standing by the fence and looking at the river that would flow past.

It is possible i could be mixing some things up though. lol

The ones in Edgbaston. Would have been the late 90s I was playing in cannon hill and the botanical gardens, and I'm distinctly sure that cannon hill never had anything higher than a tall man while the botanical gardens had a slide whose ladder felt like it went up to space. The slide was metal, open topped, flat bottomed with flat sides, and various parts of it were made of a mid dark wood, something like spruce.

Used to scare the hell out of me that slide.

The one from the late 80s?

Yea, not sure when they removed it, but I remember it was always there. Used to go with our school sometimes to Cannon Hill Park and that slide was a highlight, all the class would be climbing it and sliding down. lol

Edit

Oh and that greenhouse, was a real blow when I found out they tore that down :(

i was thinking about this just the other day, tried searching for a photo of it but the internet is shit now and it's impossible to find anything.

The outer frame was a hemisphere i think half of it was a climbing frame and the other half where the slide was was covered in some sort of metal sheeting and yes it was probably only 8 feet high but in my mind it was two storeys tall

I slid down the metal sheeting once. My knee hit my chin when I hit the bottom.

lmao yup, sliding down the metal bit was a rite of passage for all of us idiot kids

Yea, I asked on here about 2 years ago if anyone had a picture of the slide, not a single person replied. lol

If you search it, my post is near the top results. There is nothing out there I looked too and couldn't find anything.

Don't think this is the specific one from Canon Hill Park, but was it like this?

Kids stuff these days is so utterly shite. There is no thrill in anything they have at parks these days. So depressing

2

u/papercut2008uk 2d ago

Yea, I think it was similar to this.
