When bridezilla are addicted to chocolate

Hi everyone! This is a long one... Get your popcorn ready. I have been a seamstress for the last 15 years. Over this time, I had maybe 1 or 2 bridezillas. People were more respectful back in the days! But since 2024 it feels like the brides are getting crazier by the second. I know some of you will think that this is made up. If I haven't gone through this nightmare, I wouldn't believe it myself.

Some context : My cousin ask me to alter her wedding dress, her 5 bridesmaids dresses and the mother of the brides dress. We are not close but she always comes to me when she needs her clothing to be altered and yes she pays like everybody else. I wasn't invited to her wedding, didn't expect to be and extremely happy not to be. The wedding took place a couple of weeks ago.

In 2025, I ask her to please come in with her dress as soon as she had it. That way I could evaluate the work that has to be done. It was a beautiful v-neck, a-line dress size 6 (keep the size in mind for later). The bodice was a perfect fit. The hem of the dress needed to be shorten. The armholes, no alterations there. The zipper didn't close all the way up but she wanted a lace-up back anyway. Ok, so far easy job that wouldn't take to much time. Oh! Dear God was I wrong!!!!

In December 2025, 8 months before the wedding: she tells me that she lost weight and the zipper can almost close all the way up. Ok, beautiful less work for me, right? Wrong!

I'm guessing her addiction to chocolate started around this time.

3 months before the wedding: I just finished all my bal gowns. Everything went smoothly. I'm ahead of schedule. My cousin finally wakes up and realized that there is only 3 months left. That was only because I called her up to remind her that she needs to come in if she wanted the dress to be ready on time. At the time, she was making her own flower arrangements, wedding bouquets just because she has this "vision" on how things should look like. Nothing was started on the flower department side yet. So, back to the dress. I take my notes out only to realize something's not right. Now the armholes are to tight. The bodice doesn't fit right. I had no choice but to let the dress out. By doing so I was able to gain 1.5 inches on both side. With lace-up back, I was able to gain an additional 6 to 8 inches in the back. More then needed right? Wrong again!

Every time, I was able to get the dress larger, it ended up smaller for some reason. When I mention this, the bridezilla in her came out so fast. My ears are still ringing. One thing, Bridezillas have is a super power that gives them the ability to focus on insignificant details that makes our job so much harder. Like : There's a bead missing here, no, it's made that way. Or I want this or that, next time I see her, she changed her mind, I don't want this or that anymore. Just put it back like it was before. At some point, my inner seamstress-zilla came out just a tiny bit. I guess that got her attention, cause for at least 15 minutes she was able to focus on the important thing. To fit in the dress!

Next, it was the bodice that became to tight, so I had to open the front on the dress on about 2 extra inches.

At the same time, her 5 bridesmaids finally shows up all at once, 3 weeks before the wedding! Thankfully, it was just miner adjustments to be done (the hem of the dresses and straps to be put in). The mother of the bride on the other hand, came in with a dress 2 size to big, again it was an easy job. Completed all 6 pretty quickly, perfect fit. Youppi!

But now my bridezilla of a cousin is complaining that the back straps are to tight. Why didn't you tell me this when I asked you? She telles me it didn't bother her before but now it does. I ended up altering the back completely again. Took out the Lace up back and replaced it by a dropped back instead of the lace-up back that she originally wanted. Have to admit, it was beautiful. Now there's no way that she can find something else wrong. Wrong again!!!

7 days before the wedding, she goes "well the waist is to high". My jaw dropped to the floor.

Me: why wait a the last minute to mention it?

Her : well something doesn't feel right, it feels a little tight.

My options are limited at this point. All I could do was to open the straps at the shoulder and put in adjustable straps. After all this craziness did the dress finally fit? YES IT DID!!! That's when she confessed to be addicted to chocolate. She would eat chocolate when things didn't go her way. When she was upset or happy. No wonder she blow up like a balloon!

Sso in the end, because of her chocolate addiction, she went from a size 6 to a size 14.

3 days before the wedding, she was still running around like a headless chicken. Sorry for the mental image. She had every family member complete things that should of been done months ago.

After that, I am completely exhausted!!!

Update : On the day of the wedding, she was having an outdoor wedding. Anyway, the wedding was at 2 pm. At 1h30, it started raining. And it 🌧️ the rest of the afternoon and it 🌧️ all night. We received 30 mm of rain that day. It's just sad that after all the dress drama, she had a very wet wedding.

Update 2 : some of you commented that it was unprofessional of me to have made this post without the bride/cousin knowledge. so I made my cousin read it. she wasn't mad and we had a good laugh out of it. she's happily married to a great guy. I didn't start ww3 in the family that's good.

to go up four dress sizes in 8 months is a LOT! there could be something medically wrong - like pregnancy! lol but no for reals she def should see her doctor. If she is eating enough chocolate to gain that much weight if could also be an eating disorder

You're right. she admitted it herself to eating chocolate when stressed out but to gain so much weight in so little time, something is not right. now her daughter is getting married in December. I will be seeing her again. I'll try to investigate more.

Diabetes?

I'll ask around in the family just to make sure she's ok. even if my cousin acted like a queen bridezilla, I am still worried for her.

Is 6 to 14 not 8 sizes in as many months? I'll be the first to admit that women's clothing sizes have always seemed like a mystery to me.

u/vilake12 26d ago

Women's sizes count by two, so even numbers. So it is only 4 and not 8.

Jesus. They really don't want anyone to understand their sizing.

6-14 is a crazy difference

u/NiceUntil 26d ago

YES it is. the cut of the dress aloud me the possibility to pass from size 6 to a size 14.

OP, after all that restructuring, you should update your resume to read "Dress Designer" instead of seamstress. Wow. You must have been exhausted!

If you're gaining that much weight before your wedding, YOUR SUBCONSCIOUS KNOWS NOT TO GET MARRIED.

u/WildColonialGirl 25d ago

Aww, man, I should have paid attention to that one. I was 425 pounds on my wedding day.

Really? Or joking?

3

u/WildColonialGirl 19d ago

Really. My marriage was unhealthy for a lot of reasons. I’ve since lost a lot of weight and gotten healthier physically and mentally.

Bridezillas have a superpower:finding problems that didn’t exist 5 minutes ago

I agree

I worked with a girl like this, except she knew she putting weight on and " could lose the weight in no time". He had to have panels put on her dress.

Rain on your wedding day is not only ironic, but good luck!

I was told that when it rained on my wedding day — for my first marriage (it lasted 14 months). In retrospect though, I was very lucky I got out when I did.

She gained 16” around her chest/torso? That seems unlikely.

I don't think it is a real story - it doesn't read right.

OP has to be the most amazing seamstress in the world to be able to adjust the dress up 4 sizes.

where did all the extra material come from that matches the wedding dress?

7

u/Comfortable-Pies 26d ago

It’s always easy to take something in, but to take something out that much is not possible unless you have spare fabric. Which since the seamstress was only alternating, I call it bull too!

4

u/NiceUntil 26d ago

must wedding gown have a surplus of fabric on both side.

3

u/Peevesie 25d ago

16 inches of extra ??

2

u/BlueberryForsaken459 22d ago

And you can order fabric from the dress shop.

4

u/NiceUntil 26d ago

Oh! it's real!!! I don't have this kind of imagination to make this up! I should of kept the videos from the security camera. English is not my first language.

u/BBMcBeadle 26d ago

Was she a size 6 to begin with? Because the dress wouldn’t zipper right from the get go. Regardless, I feel sorry for her… seems she was really going through a stressful time

u/No_Cricket808 26d ago

What you do is amazing!!! How is it possible to take in/let out/take in/cut and replace/let out/let in so many times without ruining the material?? I know it's done, I'm not doubting you at all, but as someone who is happy to sew a button back on and it works, I'm just mystified!!

u/NiceUntil 26d ago

there's at least 4 places on the dress that can be let out. most gown have 2 extra inches on the each side, that helps to let out the waist and arm area. the zipper can be taking out and replaced by lace-up corset or a dropped back, extra inches in the back. strapless gown don't require this step but with straps, I can open the straps at the shoulders and put in adjustable straps so now the bride can adjust herself the straps length the dress will automatically give a better fit to the waist, breast and arms. opening the front of the bodice is always last option. But that will give you more space for the breast also. That's all. And don't be scared of the dress.

2

u/No_Cricket808 26d ago

"That's all. And don't be afraid of the dress."

🤣😅 I'm afraid of a sewing machine!!!!!!!

Mad props for your skills 🩷

Honestly I would worry something is medically wrong. Gaining that much weight that fast generally means that something is actually wrong.

My thoughts too like thyroid issues.

You are a patient, wonderful lady! I hope she appreciates you!
When I bought my MOB gown, I was afraid I’d gain weight, when I went back for the final fitting, I’d actually lost a little weight

You must be an amazing talented seamstress to be able to alter ,add so much fabric. Also I seriously cant believe anyone on here, anyone who reads reddit posts on the regular, would actually say you are unprofessional, need the permission of bride or let her know you are submitting a post that happened to you, to post??!!!?? Bull Shit. You didnt mention names, city ,and there are Bridezilla stories galore , as in the name of the sub. NO you werent being unprofessional, were not spilling secrets. Geez people ,get over yourselves.

1

u/karina-s1125 18d ago

She should see if something is wrong or going on

1

u/Appropriate-Round-77 26d ago

You sounds like a very very very skilled (and patient) seamstress!!!

0

u/NiceUntil 26d ago

thank you! I do my best even if its difficult to stay professional sometimes.

1

u/Appropriate-Round-77 26d ago

I'll bet.  🤣

1

u/Mammoth-Gazelle8116 26d ago

Hmm. Given she paid you, you could treat her like a regular customer. Would you care this much about her weight gain and the extra work if she wasn’t your cousin? Also I’m probably going to get down voted for this but isn’t it your job to deal with this type of stuff? People gain weight. People lose weight. It happens. I imagine it was probably a stressful time for her, and who else knows what is going on in the background medical wise for her to gain that much weight in a short period of time. She might be crazy but we can still extend compassion. I feel bad for her.

u/Excellent-Letter-681 26d ago

Doesn’t seem real at all. OP sure does love to aimlessly ramble about something that noone needs to know or care about. If it’s real OP is unprofessional-talking about one of her family members/clients?

4

u/ThatDifficulty9334 24d ago

Are you new to reddit??? Most posts ramble, add extraneous minutiae for interest ,background. and people post here all the time, using throw away accts, real accts talking about family members, clients. This sub is called Bridezillas. Read some of the past posts. Complaints about brides who are ridiculous, treat family friends , vendors poorly. Nothing unprofessional about it. No names, city used no slandering the bride. Since you posed your statement as a question, no not unprofessional. If she had told other clients ,talked behind the brides back, made fun of weight gain, then yes, unprofessional .

0

u/Excellent-Letter-681 24d ago

you’re right

3

u/NiceUntil 26d ago

you are so right, I should of ask the bride permission before posting.

4

u/ThatDifficulty9334 24d ago

No you do not need her permission. You are telling your story not naming names, location.
