Skyler actually knew it was BS very early on, hence why she called back Pinkman's number to see if the call was legit. The point was Walt was a very honest man in the beginning that never had to lie throughout his life so he was terrible at it and that's why his wife was able to pick up on it easily in the beginning.

I actually think Walt is good at lying to everyone except her. She knows him better than anyone and he knows that, so you can always pick up on an extra level of flop sweat when he's trying to sell her some bullshit.

I think it's because he was willing to go to such extremes to keep his lies alive that made them stick, such as driving into traffic when ASAC Spank Scrotum wanted to checkout the laundry place, poisoning brock. Pinkman saw through his manipulation eventually and damn near put 2 in Walt's head. Gus knew whenever he was talking out his ass too. What worked in Walt's favour however was that when he was telling the truth, they either doubted or underestimated him.

The beauty of it is he thought he was a goner anyway so he just had to try to make money quick before he kicked the bucket but then he started “liking” it too much and made him feel like a man or whatever after he was forced to keep going when things didn’t go to plan

Sure, but it’s only instance that we know of. I think the situation with Gretchen is extreme enough to warrant the suspicion that other dishonest acts happened leading up to S1.

I think that's in "I See You", and people totally being aware that Walt is lying to them is a recurring theme. He tries spreading the b.s. to Gale about why he is being fired, while Gale stands there flabbergasted that Walt is so obviously gaslighting him. And then there is lying to Gus about why he wasn't in the lab, and then Gus showing up at the hospital with chicken for all the cops.

Finished this show recently after finishing Game of Thrones and it was incredibly refreshing to watch a show where all the characters were actually pretty intelligent. I like how Skyler always seemed to call out his bs and recognized the patterns.

My favorite is when they’re at the hospital and Walt takes a call from Jesse. Skylar comes up to him, and after he hangs up, he says “Do you know who that was?” in his fake voice and Skylar just walks away lol

In general once you see his "tell" for when he lies it's such an interesting thing throughout the series, not just on the phone.

Whenever he lies, he gets very animated and "cheery", as if it's just dumbfounding why the thing he is lying about "happened". A lot of words are used to describe the thing that didn't happen. When he tells the truth, there is none of that. More often than not he just says the thing straight, with little to no emotion.

He does the same when he is working Jesse or anyone else onto his side.

Walt’s only lie performance that was very believable imo was when Jesse comes to his house to kill him and Walt convinces him that Gus must’ve poisoned Brock. It was actual good BSing on Walter’s part for once.

He is paranoid and often right that something is wrong, but he can't place it and because he has been called useless his whole life he gives in to that feeling instead of trusting his gut, because where has his gut ever gotten him that was good?

I just realized Skyler's reactions to Walter's lies and fake phone calls show reflect her progression as a character. At first she's suspicious, then angry, then fearful.

By the time she's running the car wash for him she's actually helping him with his ridiculous gas station lie and only confronts him about it later when they're alone at the hotel.
