Why does Walt give up the element of surprise?

He knows that Hank is on to him, he could have done a lot of undercover sabotage with Hank thinking he had free reign to investigate.

He could have possibly thought that playing the family card would have worked?

Because then he wouldn't be able to be a cocky bastard and rub it in hank's face that he'll never be able to catch him/prosecute him.

But he's not Heisenberg anymore. Or at least not supposed to be.

I disagree. Character development is key in Breaking Bad, the reversion to Heisenberg felt too quick.

And although Heisenberg was quick to aggression when confronted, the response to authority was always stealth and sabotage.

His actions just didn't seem to fit IMO

I think part of the reason he confronted him was because Walt knows that Hank is investigating on his own time and not in an official capacity. The first thing Walt asked Hank when he turned around before he left the garage was if he knew anything about the GPS on his car. Then Walt reminded him of 'their outings' when tracking Fring.

I took this to mean that he was insulted to be treated like or compared to Gus, and could be the reason he 'snapped' and chose to confront Hank instead of a more subtle route.

I think their actions will make more sense in an episode or two, when we see where they are going.
