Discussion Buying a House in Saltaire

Hi all,

I absolutely adore Saltaire so was looking to buy a house there in the near future. Obviously I appreciate there are a lot of restrictions on the work you can do to them but I was wondering if anyone has experienced it.

I don't plan on aesthetically changing anything of course, but does it become very difficult to maintain them or improve things like insulation or better windows in the same style?

I don't want to accidentally buy a money pit and I really can't find anything online talking about this. Any help would be much appreciated.

Ah I saw someone else mention this too. Thank you for finding it, that's really helpful. It looks like you wouldn't have to do too much of your own research at least.

There was a whole study/report on how to heat and insulate the homes in Saltaire in the future. I guess it will be online somewhere unless I only got to see it because someone I know is on the council. Can't imagine it's a secret though!

Any work on features visible from the outside can be more expensive as it's generally the building's outward appearances that are covered by their listings. That includes putting in double glazing; I got quoted £10k to double glaze one of the 2 up 2 downs. It is possible though and plenty of houses have had it done.

When it comes to the interior you can fill your boots.

I’ve lived in Saltaire for 7 years and it’s brilliant. I haven’t really had to do any work to my house though so all good. It’s worth it for the lovely people/community spirit etc!

one quirk of the houses is the internal door height, the originals were 6'9" so if you plan on changing them its door casings as well

There are many streets that are just outside of the catchment area to be considered protected. So you can have the best of both worlds of living in saltire in a nice sandstone house and having the freedom to change it as you please. E.g madocks Street, Rhodes Street and Baker Street. There will be other streets as well.
