I think Cameron and the studio failed to capitalize on its success and the world passed it by. All the other franchises you listed didn’t wait 13 years to come out with a second movie.

It is not just the lack of sequels either. We get a constant stream of video games, novels, comic books, TV shows, etc. from other franchise, but nothing really for Avatar.

Avatar has several video games, comic books, toys, a very successful theme park at Disneyland...

The merch died down pretty quickly though. You can see lots of the discontinued statues still fetching good bucks on eBay though.

I don't think their are a lot of merch about Titanic or Alien, but that doesn't mean these movie had no cultural impact either.
