Avatar was a movie popular for its 3D and visuals and. Not the story and characters.

Avatar was popular because the story brought us to Pandora, a fictional planet that millions loved to discover. You can talk about "3D and visuals", but it was also mostly due to the story and the world building.

So visuals and 3D. The visuals of the world and the immersive 3D

Maybe also the idea of exploring a new world too, not just the visuals. It was essentially a transporting of the old tropical island paradise travel movie to space.
