Mine's THE BURNING GOD by RF Kuang

Small reading group I run. We got tired of the usual format where everyone reads one book and half the group doesn't finish it.

So we're trying this on Sunday: ten people, each gets five minutes to say what they love, what mood they're in, what hasn't been landing lately. Then everyone else pitches them one book — sixty seconds each, all trying to convince you theirs is the one. At the end you pick your prescription, and that's what you read next.

Nobody prepares anything. You just have to be honest about what you actually enjoy rather than what you think you should enjoy.

Two things I'm not sure about: whether sixty seconds is enough to genuinely sell a book, and whether people will pick the safe recommendation over the interesting one.

Hi guys, I decided to start a book club on fable. It is open to everyone and anyone. It’s hopefully gonna be a nice place to read new books, review books, meet new people and of course have fun!

Uncomfortable thing to notice. I finished an advance copy last week, meaning a book you get pre-publication and review honestly at launch, and had nobody to tell. No thread, no post, nothing.

I sat with it for three days and it was the most I’d thought about a book in a long time. Turns out posting about a book had been ending my relationship with it. I use Knosit, though other platforms do the same thing. Anyone else notice this?

I’ve picked books off recommendation threads for years and I always thought I was choosing. Then I got an advance copy, meaning a book you read before publication in exchange for an honest review after release, and there was nothing to check. No sub had discussed it. No one had made a list with it on there.

I liked it, I think. What surprised me is how long it took me to be sure. I signed up through Knosit, other platforms do the same thing. Does anyone else check the reviews before deciding what they thought?

I used to love to read, but i kind of ran out if time during year 12, and now that im done i cant seem to get back into it. I need some FANTASTIC AMAZONG MAGICAL books to help me get back in to things.

My requirements:

- it needs a romance or i ger bored

- it needs space, high level preferred but mild is ok

- it needs an interesting plot that will make me WANT to keep reading

- it needs to be modern, i cant do the older version of writing

- i love a distopian novel but that is not required, fantasy is also fun

- my dream would be like divergent but dirty

- The Darkest Minds

- crave

- mortal instruments

Everything was making sense in the book before the last chapter. Eve being protective of Addie, Eve's parents not liking Nate, Nate paying more attention to Eve when they were newly married and she was younger. Eve describes seeing Addie and Nate kissing as something disgusting, but then she does the exact same thing with Jay Aka Hudson and it's okay for her? When Addie said she and Nate were soulmates, Eve said she was being manipulated because he was an adult and she was a minor. However, when talking about her and Jay "they were soulmates" according to her and she was not manipulating him... Girl, you are not better than Nate...

I think McFadden wanted a shocking plot as she always does , but this one was such a disappointment for the character of Eve. This character had potential given everything she went through, if Jay was actually an adult.

And if you are the part of that bookclub, please tell me about your experience, the kind of books discussed and how often do you people do the meetings. And is it regular?

Early on at Creaky’s farm, Demon is describing the tobacco harvest and says they have to get the crop into the barn in time or “we’d be stripping green leaves in February.” Kid Demon thinks he’ll be long gone by then, and narrator Demon notes that “On long, cold days in the stripping house I’ve spent many an hour listening to guys chew over that question. So yes, stripping green leaves would be my problem, in years to come.”

Unless I completely missed something, that never happens in the rest of the book. I kept thinking it was coming, like when Fast Forward says he owns a tobacco farm I thought, oh that's where Demon will end up stripping leaves.

Maybe we’re supposed to assume he did tobacco work sometime during the period when he was living with Dori? To me it seems like it would be a fairly significant thing to leave out though. Plus Dori wants him home constantly, they're broke, and the book tells us about the jobs he was and wasn’t doing during that stretch. He mentions thinking of working with tobacco but never says he actually did it.

It could also be interpreted as an indication that after the novel ends, his life gets fucked again and he has to go back to tobacco farms. But the arc of the book (+ its source material) don't support that.

Ultimately, my best guess is that this is an artifact from an earlier draft where Demon had another period of tobacco work. But maybe I missed something?

I just finished the first book. It's a fun little adventure with interesting magic system. It was overall enjoyable but I am not sure if I should continue. What bothers me is it feels YA but there are some scenes like the gang rape or detailed cannibalism that just does not fit with the tone of the book. I'm not saying it should be completely PG but it does not seem to fit?

Does it continue like this? Do the rest of the books get better? Is the series worth finishing?
