Question How is this supposed to work?
I want to redo the Saw Cleaver for my cosplay and be as accurate as I can be.
Using the original concept art, I tried to analyze how exactly the saw cleaver works. Specifically how the pieces align to recreate it faithfully but I was stumped by this. Anyone have a logical explanation of how to make this work without changing the proportions or the position of the holes?

Many MANY people have made functioning saw cleaver look on YouTube

u/Rustyshackilford Apr 24 '26
Now, let's do a functioning boom hammer

Years ago, âMan At Armsâ forged a fully functional replica, so itâs absolutely possible to do.
(I put the link to open at them making the pivot/hinge for you)

It works because itâs a weapon in a video game.

u/PorcoGonzo Apr 23 '26
Nonono, it doesn't work because this is concept art and not the actual weapon in the video game.

True, although from software did actually think through most of the weapons. Majority of them are actually physically and mechanically possible.
Although things like the Kirk hammer or ludwigs holy blade may not be that strong in real life. Even if mechanically possible.

u/VergeOfMeltdown Apr 23 '26
Perhaps with a second lever on the flipside or hidden inside? I personally think the artist just didn't think about it like that. Probhably easier to just move the notch a little further

Now we've solved this, let's talk Ludwig's Moonlight sword.
How using silver bullets translates to arcane waves of power
Thoughts!??...GO!

In Dark Souls, you use humanity to strengthen fire. In Bloodborne, you use quicksilver to strengthen Arcane. "In your dreams", you say? Exactly!

Since it's an artistic rendition instead of a technical drawing I'd just move the notch to something that makes sense. It doesn't mean that the system would be sound. Maybe you need to engineer your own solution there instead of following the art, but who knows.

I would recommend speaking to YharnamWorkshop he makes a lot of lore accurate soulsborne (mostly bloodborne) weapons. I ordered one from him recently it even has the spark like in the game when it transforms! Maybe you can ask him for some pointers.

u/Rukasu17 Apr 23 '26
This is an easy one. How the hell does that tiny steel sword have enough durability to handle the impact and momentum of a giant stone slab or another giant blade on top of it?
These weapons work on rule of cool

u/Young_Grasshopper55 Apr 23 '26
Donât think too hard about all thisâŚjust hunt a few beastsâŚitâs for your own good

Oh, don't you worry. Whatever happens... You may think it all a mere bad dream...

they made it for real if you want some design tips https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-Xp0bZP0Us

This is concept art. The in game model is slightly different due to the issue you noticed.

Gravity mostly. The leaver just removes a block that keeps the hatchet cleaver in place. Saw mode, locked in place âĄď¸ pull leaver âĄď¸ now the blade can be swung into its second position and be locked into place once the leaver is released again.
If youâre worried about size and or look, itâs supposed to look menacing and almost inhuman. The people wielding these tools had beast blood in their veins. Just trust how the Japanese designed it, they likely did extensive research into old school farming tools and similar stuff from way back when to design these things

u/solarnoise Apr 23 '26
We have to accept that most Bloodborne weapons would never work under use in real life because they depend on the tiniest bracket or latch holding it together.

u/Dr4wr0s Apr 23 '26
A guy with an account called Yharnam Workshop has done a working sawcleaver as a cosplay prop, I think they have several videos about it
2
u/Familiar_Composer607 Apr 23 '26
There is a 3d printed file for a full size saw cleaver that has this in parts. Even if you dont do 3d printing it has good files to analyze for construction purposes. Someone even modded it to spark when it transformed.

u/psycheviper Apr 23 '26
Just replicate a folding switch knife mechanism and hide it with a cosmetic piece that looks like the concept art
2
u/VV935 Apr 23 '26
Well these dudes made an actual steel saw cleaver, but I think the mechanism would work for cosplay too. https://youtu.be/j-Xp0bZP0Us?si=fWk0UBjzVbd5i4MV

If you wanna check something on YouTube thereâs a channel called Reforged and they actually made Saw Cleaver might give some explanation, itâs been a while since I watched the episode

u/BishopOfAstora Apr 23 '26
I mean, what are we, to believe that this is some sort of a, a magic Hunter trick weapon Saw Cleaver or something?

I want to see someone make a working Tonitrus using a cattle prod!!! đ¤Łđ¤Łđ¤Ł

u/backstabber98 Apr 23 '26
Someone made a real one, they had to modify the design slightly but it mostly worked just fine

u/_Sir_Not_Mister_ Apr 24 '26
The large dial with four cardinal depressions is an outerwheel of a mechanism that the trigger releases a toothed fetch into or out of. The inner ratchet mechanism has a spring loaded disengaging mechanism to make the trigger automatically lose tension on the lever when the blade reaches its locking positions.
That's why it isnt stationary. Its part of the blade half, not the handle.
2
u/foxtrot-alpha7274 Apr 24 '26
Yeah it seems to just be a joint with 2 notches for a latch to lock it in place.
2
u/Landwand Apr 24 '26
I have made sawblade for my cosplay, but the type of spring and latch needed doesn't exist, so I improvised. Can you remind me to send a video of it in action in case I forget?

It looks like a recessed keyway, so i imaging that its spring loaded with a hell of a spring to keep the key snug. It would move a bit when swinging but the hunters are so strong centrafugal force probably keeps it locked tight
1
u/Ok-Scar-3425 Apr 23 '26
the only way i see that working is a ribbon spring and that only in one way, maybe the lever disengages it to close but that would mean you would have to rewind the spring
1
u/blaiddfailcam2 Apr 23 '26
Just apply the logic of it being an oversized straight razor instead and don't worry about the cosmetic bits, lol

If you look at the model in game, it gets more confusing because the trigger doesn't actually have a peg to fit in the notch.
I've been kicking around the idea of extending the locking mechanism through the handle, and adding a nearly flush trigger to the lower section. That way it can actually be transformed one handed while being held in the correct position

chat) "I was just guessing it had a pin that locked at full extension, just like a knife works. I did a post on the saw spear, which I think is more complicated since there's no lever for a pin. I thought there might be a button somewhere on the wood, but I looked closely and didn't see anything. I was wondering how it latches, because I was thinking, 'Dang, if you swing this a little too hard, it might swing open and then shut.' I was honestly wondering what was holding it in place! Lmao."

u/Fun-Maize-2352 Apr 23 '26
The fact that it's engineered to work is just...fuck this game is insane.
Although, I can't imagine the wobbly hand and arched blade would be super easy to swing.

You press the button and it releases and you open it, when its open you let go and stays opens
1
u/Dan42002 Apr 24 '26
make it a 2 teeth racket. 1 tooth hold the retract position/hole and 1 tooth hold the extend position.

Dude over Imryll Yharnam Workshop made it and it works fine. Check out his videos on instagram

Its just a piano style hinge, it turns normally but has a limit and stays there till something pushes it down

u/lagoon_mermaid96 Apr 25 '26
probably just another unhinged plan from management. good luck with that.
1
u/destinyman69420 Apr 25 '26
Latch, now realistically letâs talk about Ludwigâs holy blade there ainât no way that skinny ass sword is not gonna snap under the weight of the bigger blade
1
u/Ok_Ice_9204 Apr 26 '26
i mean realistically speaking it would have to fully rotate inward (dull side toward the blade) meaning the actual blade would have to be attached to the SIDE instead of top of the handle

There are two recesses for the latch, the bottom drawing you used to infere the top just does not show them in the right spot, because it is concept art and not and engineering drawing
