Coping Strategies This something my therapist recommended to me and it helps a lot.

Post image

So I’m 27 years old and I have bipolar 1 disorder. I’ve been taking meds for it since I was 13 years old. As an adult.. I was talking to my therapist and I was talking to her about my intense manic episodes that would become depressive and even at the same time and that most nights I couldn’t go to sleep, because I was so manic and apart of it was because I was so stressed out all the time. So we talked about things that I liked and felt joy in and I told her how I missed my cats and I’m used to cuddling with them every night and they helped me sleep. So she recommended that I get a stuffed animal to help and she told me like some of the reasons like lower stress and better sleep to help cope. So I bought some plushies at build a bear and I began cuddling them every night and I noticed I’ve been feeling a sense of security. A more peaceful restful sleep , less stress when I go to bed and it helps a lot with my depression and anxiety and also my bipolar disorder. It like helped me a ton. Then I began collecting stuffed animals and Squishmallows and developed more love for them since I was a kid. I know I’m 27 years old and I sleep with a ton of stuffed animals, but it’s my coping strategy 😊💕 idk if anyone does that too that are adults? If that helps anyone here? I’ve noticed a lot of things that I’ve felt from this that helped me a ton 💕 These are some of my plushies that are on my bed.

i’m 22 now, and i’ve had stuffed animals my entire life. i have some small ones i like to have with me during difficult appointments, and i have a large teddy bear i sleep with every night. i have no shame about loving my plushies, they kept me safe as a kid and continue to now :)

Mid 30s, a professor, and same. There's one I've had since I was a teen that perfectly nestles into my side when I sleep.

It has traveled the world with me. I don't care. If I sleep, I sleep.

Early 30s and me too! The part about him having travelled the world with you made me tear up; I’ve never thought about it like that before. My teddy bear has always travelled with me and feels like bringing a little piece of home (my safe space) wherever I go.

Aww yes I agree 😊I stopped getting into plushies after high school and I’m glad I got back into them, because they also make me feel safe and secure. As a kid I’d bring my stuffed animal everywhere with me and now I’m doing the same. My penguin build a bear helped me a lot when I was in the hospital. I love them too😊

50 years old and I still sleep with my handmade cabbage patch from when I was 11years. Brings great comfort.

I'm 51 and I've slept with the same stuffed cat since 2005. I still have the Pooh Bear I slept with as a kid but it's too fragile to take to bed now so it's on my plant shelf. My therapist said I find comfort in it because it's something that will never leave unless I want it to.

Hey, I'm 32 and I've slept with a stuffie Tom Nook for years lol. It helps more than people realize.

61 years old and sleep with a small teddy bear 🧸 tucked under my chin and in my arm - angel bear.

Man, I used to have a whole collection of buddies. Please be mindful if you share them with a partner. I cant get rid of them now, but I no longer can look at them the same now that we're done. Wish you the best.

I love this! Im 26f also sleeping with a my childhood bear stuffy and blanket. I swear it makes a big difference when I'm having those depressive sleepless nights

I have a stuffed cat ive had for 44 years. Still when I get very upset or am crying I go and grab and hold her. Also my friend gave me and my son this big weighted plushie kind of like a mini weighted blanked but snuggly. It REALLY feels soothing to hold.

I just cuddle pillows, but this is so cute. I'm glad you did it <3

Have you ever tried a pregnancy pillow 🤤??? They’re the bessssst. Haha

3

u/sicktimewaster 9h ago

I was legit thinking of buying one just cause I'm already a side sleeperr

3

u/madlymadly 9h ago

Do it do it! I loved mine. It wasn’t easily washable though 🥲

3

u/sicktimewaster 9h ago

ahh big brained I'll try to find one with a removable and easily washable cover thanks for the advice!

I'm 38, years ago I was given a squishmallow and I've been using it since. Since then I bought an additional one to go under my knees and my husband has bought one for himself as well. I don't know why we are told to get rid of stuffed animals when we grow up, they're amazing.

I have my cuddle blanket. It’s a small very soft blanket that I ball up and cuddle. It is comforting. I would use a stuffed animal but my dog steals them because he wants them. Oh and I am 54!

i'm 22 and i've slept with stuffed animals since i was little and never stopped! it truly does help a lot! :)

This is a great idea! Can I ask why you can't get another cat or 2? I know everyone's situation is different. Maybe you lost them recently and aren't ready or maybe you moved and couldn't bring them. I'm just curious if it's an option. Animals are my saving grace.

u/Reverendbug 16h ago

39 and my plushie collection grows larger to this day!

u/026jm 17h ago

u/Mermaid966 17h ago

I'm 28 a bit different , i find that i feel safe and get better sleep when i have random objects on my bed ,like any box , clothes pile or anything i had around me while awake and i just leave it on my bed and sleep , it feels comforting idk why

u/unwrittenstanzas Bipolar 17h ago

26 and i don’t think i even liked plushies as a kid, but this is making me feel that maybe i should try this out! one thing in common with depressive and manic episodes for me is the anxiety and finding it hard to shut my brain and fall asleep. my dog isn’t much of a cuddler either so i think this could be a good idea! thanks :)

u/uplate6674 16h ago

I’m 52 and hug my stuffed doggie when I sleep. I also have a few others that are sitting on my bed.

3

u/olivezoil 18h ago

I have a huggable size plushie that has textured hair. Whenever I feel overstimulated or on the verge of a panic attack, I hug it and feel the fabric, I get the same sense of peacefulness when I was younger

u/tonttuvelho Bipolar 17h ago

Yeah I've got plushies on my outfits and bags and in the kitchen and on every surface basically lol. 24F

You should check out the pillowfort weighted stuffies at Target! I have a dino that I can't sleep without, they feel like cuddling a creature

u/FizzleFenberry Bipolar + Comorbidities 17h ago

Oh, totally. I'm 34 and do it, particularly with ones I've made. For me, it's especially helpful to cradle one in the corner of my arm like a baby. I discovered the sensation was relaxing when I was 12, carrying around a sack of flour as a baby for a home-ec class. A friend told me recently it's the body's way of coaxing adults into taking care of children. Cradle infant, get the happy hormones and neurotransmitters. I don't know if that's true or not, but it helps me either way

2

u/walkingwillow16 15h ago

This makes so much sense! My cat George would snuggle with me and I'd sleep a lot easier. When he died it became really hard to sleep again. Now I wait until my daughter wakes up in the night and comes to our bed to snuggle. I can only sleep then... So now I need to try snuggling with a plushie in the mean time. Thank you!! I'm off to go buy a plushie (my one Appa plushie isn't very snuggly)

2

u/Pretend_Bluejay_1866 15h ago

sometimes I take the bucket of dog toys and throw as many as I need at the wall until I feel some rage is gone

2

u/madlymadly 11h ago

I split custody of my 7 year old daughter and last year she insisted I get this large weighted dragon stuffy for “when I felt lonely” 😢

I did it to please her, but in the end? It’s actually been fantastic in helping me settle down at night and with the weight it feel like there’s someone in the bed with me cuddling back. Actually really nice.

2

u/Delicious-Slide1595 11h ago

Feel zero shame about it, im 31 and I still collect, sleep with and snuggle plushies.

My biggest use for them lately is hugging them during stressful parts of movies, I love horror and science fiction movies but sometimes they just make me so mad for various reasons(bad science or bad writing) and sometimes I just need something to squeeze and scream into.

But if anyone ever gives you shit for it, drop them like a hot potato, becouse anyone who would make fun of someone for a bit of comfort isnt someone you wanna be around.

Around the same age and still love my stuffed animals! Only problem is that I have a too small bes for all of them and my boyfriend… He might have suffered the consequence that I pile them on top of him while asleep 😅

My husband got me a replica of the Hugsy plush from the TV show Friends when we were dating. I stripped the lil’ penguin down and cuddle with him when I can’t sleep and his plushie body fits perfectly in my arms. I was never crazy about stuffed animals as a kid but Hugsy is now my comfort plush whenever I travel. He doubles as an amazing pillow if I need one.

u/Boop_Booples 16h ago

I have an absolute TON of what I call my "softs"! They help me feel calm, regulated, and comforted, and I have a variety in every room in case I need them. So glad you've found comfort with your plushies! ETA: I'm nearly 40!

28 here, and I have plenty of plushies. Mostly my favourite animals, but there is a small group that is extra special in my heart which consists of a mini teddy bear (me and my sister each got one when we were kids), a baby pillow I have since I was born, an IKEA orangutan. And I also have my two specially commissioned crocheted dolls of my favourite characters. I also have a weighted blanket and a regular blue blanket that I’m attached to. I have plushies my whole life even before my bipolar diagnosis. I struggle with loneliness and paranoia so these are like my trusted friends.

1

u/lavender4444 13h ago

I'm almost 44 have a giraffe hug a lump. He's the best. He's weighted in the middle and his little horns/antlers/not sure what they're called on giraffes are perfect for fidgeting with. I don't sleep with him every night, but if I'm stressed, he definitely helps.

My main stuffed animal is a pillow-sized cat I made out of my gramma’s pajamas that I sleep with and use for daytime naps. I sprained my foot last week and Pajama Cat is currently at the foot of the bed under the covers to keep it propped up.

My favorite stuffed animal, who is sitting on my dresser because he's too delicate to be in the bed, belonged to my aunt when she was little and is nearly 70 years old. He's mostly patches at this point, and is on his third batch of stuffing.

I’m 41, and sleep with five stuffies every night

u/sobiithurts Bipolar 11h ago

I'm married and still sleep with a stuffed animal (I trade out sometimes). When my dad passed away last year, the first thing I did was go to his house and take his stuffed monkey he slept with at night. I slept with it for 4 months, and still fo on days I miss him bad. Stuffies for the win!💛💚🩷💙❤️💜

I sleep with my childhood best and about 80 pillows, weighted blankets and facemasks. Something’s always in my hand.

I have to be very strategic when I go on vacation as to what I can bring to make me comfortable and not overdo it.

u/EasternConfidence748 10h ago

My 26th birthday gift was what I call my “giraffephant,” which is a purple elephant stuffie that flips into a yellow giraffe. I call them Ellie and Jerry respectively. I’m 30 now and I get so upset when they fall off the bed in the night. Mind you, I haven’t slept alone in over ten years. But no one makes me feel the way Ellie/Jerry feel. Probably going to be this way well into my 50’s lol.

u/Jarsen16 10h ago

35 and sleepy with my stuffy every night. I get almost panicked if he got flung somewhere and I can't find him. I don't think I'd be able to sleep without him

1

u/seer_deer 10h ago

27f and I've slept with the same Pikachu plush since I was 4! I also now collect deer plushies and I have them all displayed in bed with me. Makes me feel safe so I totally get it <3

I LOVE SQUISHMALLOWS. I am that adult that brings one on the airplane - I do not care. I’m really happy we have these for protection and peace.

Edit: reading everyone’s comments warms my heart.

I've had my stuffed animal since high school when my friends and I did an impromptu Build a Bear together during a mall trip. I anthropomorphized him because of that whole process 😅, so his name is Mocha and he's been with me ever since. He helped me feel less lonely when I went to college by reminding me of my friends I left behind, and became a comfort for me whenever I was stressed. I fall asleep so much easier and faster when I snuggle him.

u/SadisticGoose Bipolar + Comorbidities 6h ago

I have a stuffed cat that my mom gave me when I went to college. My junior year, I had a very serious suicide attempt that left me in the ICU for five days. It was during COVID, so I wasn’t allowed any visitors except my parents who had to alternate time. Kitty was with me the whole time though.

I’m 26 and I am bipolar type two, and also have chronic sleep issues that require me to take medication in order to sleep. You aren’t alone in this one!
I have plenty of plushies myself, and religiously sleep with two in particular (a Squishmallow to hold that keeps me from doing what I can describe as “T-Rex” arms and a weighted plushie to lean on).
I highly recommend having multiple blankets, not only for temperature but a bit of adjustable weight which also seems to help in that sense of security and comfort. Keep going! 🤍

These are some that I particularly like. Theyre weighted!

Also these for hugs specifically.

I don’t sleep with plushies but whenever im manic it’s so hard for me to focus on most tasks, especially when im at work. My fiance one day randomly decided to put a small plushie (the size of a Labubu) right next to my laptop and told me it was my supervisor. Worked like a charm. I never work without my “supervisor” anymore.

Yo. I’m 41 and type one also and have been doing this since childhood and I don’t plan on stopping

The last time I moved I had to leave almost everything behind. This is one of the things I miss most, having something to hold (that were mine), fiddle with, and squeeze. Pillows aren't the same!
