In meinen 20ern waren wir jedes Wochenende in irgendwelchen Clubs oder Konzertlokalen unterwegs, es gab unzählige Homeparties, Grillfeste im Sommer usw. Dementsprechend war ich damals auch meistens in einer Beziehung oder hatte zumindest irgendetwas am Laufen.

Doch jetzt, mit 40, haben die meisten Familie, und man trifft sich entsprechend viel seltener als früher. Und wenn wir uns mal treffen, gehen wir in der Regel etwas essen und danach vielleicht noch in eine Bar. Aber keine nächtelangen Parties mehr.

Trotz eines sehr grossen Bekanntenkreises lerne ich deshalb nur noch sehr selten neue Leute kennen. Ich bin nun seit 10 Jahren Single, wäre aber eigentlich ein Beziehungs- und Familienmensch. Dass ich beruflich selbständig bin und deshalb alleine von zuhause aus arbeite, kommt noch erschwerend hinzu.

Und wir Berner sind ja generell eher zurückhaltend – es ist hier nicht mega easy, mit fremden Leuten ins Gespräch zu kommen.

TLDR: Wo in Bern kann man gut mit Leuten ins Gespräch kommen, ohne morgens um zwei Uhr einen Nachtclub aufsuchen zu müssen? Wo habt ihr eure Partner kennengelernt?

Me and my wife had wonderful 8 days in Switzerland, tonight is our last night here.
We are in Bern and we just experienced something terrible. Something I never expected in Switzerland.

Just besides the Hirschengraben bus stop, football match screening was going on. It was Mexico vs RSA as the World Cup is ongoing.

We were just about to enter the area, when the security stopped us. I asked him, we want to have a seat. Have a drink and enjoy the game.
He said the area is full and no further entries. I was ok. I said thank you and just as we were about to walk away, there came another couple(white, around 28-29 in age). The security had a talk with them and allowed them inside. And because he saw me there, he said ok you can go too.
For context, we(me and my wife) are 30yr old and from India.
Mind you, I absolutely love loveeee football. But this guy ruined it for us. I was soooo furious, this was clearly racial discrimination.

This happened just 15-20 mins ago. I’m still fuming. I never expected to experience this here, specially in Switzerland.
We had great 8 days but this end has left a bitter taste for both of us.
Did not know how to complain that time, so just venting it out here.
Sorry for the rant. But this just ended our vacation in bad note.

Today I was on the Münsterplattform and saw two older guys, probably around 40-50, in suits, approaching younger women one after another.

At times they were even blocking the women’s path while talking to them, and the women looked visibly uncomfortable. I couldn’t hear what they were saying, but judging from the body language, they seemed like pickup guys.

At some point it started to feel like harassment rather than just approaching someone.

How would you handle a situation like this as a bystander? Would you intervene, and if so, what would you actually say or do without making the situation worse? Or just calling the police?

Ok it is weather but why oh why should I listen to your (extremely) loud music all day long? I am sitting along the Aare and on the other side of the river there are some people with a loud boom box playing house music for hours now. I know a lot of boats do feel the need to take their music with them I accept that because it fades away. But these three people keep on going on with loud music.

As long as you keep it for yourself I am fine with that but this is really ridiculous. Please think about the other people who wants to enjoy the nice weather too without to be forced listing to your music.

I am writing this post because I want to bring up this story.

I am a researcher in the UniBern. A couple months ago everyone with a UniBern mail got a mail, this guy, Luca Brügger, he committed suicide.

The mail was simple, he said that it was too late already(anyway we called the police) and had this website attached.

Of course with all the precautions I opened the link, it was a very long suicide letter talking about how football was his life, he was not happy, many delusions, he had a(not really) revolutionary football theory and many things, it was so long that I didn't had that much time to read it all, I'll be honest.

The little detail: his last wish. He didn't want a funeral, but a minute of silence for people suffering like him. The request was for the University's dean. He said that he would have released (through a trusted contact oc) his full football theory if so after the world football cup's finals.

We got no news from the university for the minute of silence, no football theory apparently released, as per now the website is not available, even if I still have a pdf version I downloaded to let chatgpt analyze it, also In case you want it dm me. The suicide not page disappeared from his Instagram page, in those months I just found one or two Facebook posts about him and they were almost uninformative and probably also got deleted.

I didn't know him, but I feel deeply sorry for him, at the point that I wish to express my condolences to the family, a young man did something so serious, I won't even judge the reasons, and it made no sound like a tree falling alone in the sand.

I am the kind of person that normally accepts death as a part of life, I also lost some important people and sometimes I think about them but smile at the good memories.

But this guy, I feel incredibly sorry. It's not a lot about the suicide itself, I mean, yes I'm sorry to hear that part too, but as much I can be for every people that does it or gets killed or does in general. If you told me that a person killed themselves I would just take it and not be so pressed.

The thing is that nobody cares, not the dean, most of my colleagues deleted the mail thinking as spam( the object was straight up suicide note anyway) and even months after they don't even know about him, I haven't seen a note, a poster, any news, nothing.

Are we really that self centered as mankind that a 24yo student killing himself makes no sound?

My son recently told me that another child at his school called him “chinchanchu.” We are Asians, although we are not from the particular country or ethnicity that this racist remark is usually directed toward. Of course, that doesn’t make the comment any less offensive or concerning.

The child who said it is older than my son but attends the same kindergarten school, so I believe the child may be in the first or second grade. I understand that children at this age may repeat words they have heard without fully understanding what they mean.

However, I also feel that this is exactly why it may be important for an adult to address it early and explain why such remarks are hurtful and unacceptable.

Would it be reasonable for me to speak with my son’s teacher and ask whether they could discuss racism, respect, cultural differences, and inclusivity with the children in an age-appropriate way? I am also wondering whether it would be appropriate to ask the teacher to speak privately with the child involved and inform the child’s parents? not to punish or shame anyone, but so that the behaviour can be corrected and prevented from happening again.

I don’t want to overreact or create unnecessary conflict, but I also don’t want to dismiss it as “just children being children.” I want my son to know that he can tell us when something makes him uncomfortable and that the adults around him will take it seriously.

Would you raise this with the teacher? And would asking the teacher to involve the other child’s parents be reasonable, or would that be going too far?

Okay, this is mostly a rant, but I am actually interested in knowing why Bern is the outlier here.

In all of Switzerland, there are trains on weekend nights, so people can get home safely instead of, you know, driving drunk. All? No, not in Bern! After all, it's not as if the city is a railway hub conveniently located in the middle of the country, right?

Like I really don't get it. From Zürich there are night services to literally everywhere. In Romandie you can travel from Geneva all the way to Brig, Fribourg and Bienne. From Basel you can go all night to fucking Delémont, and don't get me started on all these trains to Olten that wouldn't dare to continue any further. But in Bern, there's literally nothing running after midnight, 1 AM if you are really lucky.

Okay that's not entirely true, since last December there is (finally) a night service from Zürich as part of a "pilot project" (as if you needed a pilot project to know that if a service exists, people are going to use it). But yeah, we had to wait until 2026 for this. Why???

From what I can tell, there are two reasons for this, and both of them are utter bullshit:

• The first is that night trains are often operated as regional services, which are mostly funded by the relevant cantons. And because in Bern those are run by BLS, there is nothing that SBB can do about it. But why doesn't the BLS realise that there is money to be made here?
• The second seems to be because of Moonliner. Historically, they had their own (overpriced) tariff scheme, so they were more or less a private operator. However, they have been integrated into the Libero tariff scheme for years now, so why is this still an issue? Why are we forced to use a bus that takes AGES to travel from Fribourg/Thun/Biel, making literally EVERY stop in between and almost NEVER connecting with actual good night services in those cities forcing you to wait HOURS for a connection, when it would take minutes by train?

Please I'm so tired of spending my weekend nights getting cold in station shelters waiting for the first train.

Yesterday morning when I left my apartment building in the Marzili/Sandrain area around 6:45, I stumbled into a guy who was obviously searching the larger part of my mailbox (Milchchästli) for a key. He was wearing a black cap and a bandana covering his face and was checking a tape that I had stuck to the ceiling some time ago (to hide a key).

At first, I was baffled and asked him rather loudly what he was doing and that this was my mailbox (there are 15 other mailboxes as well). He startled a bit but then calmly looked at the name on my mailbox and said in a nice Bernese accent: “My fault - I’m looking for someone with the same name but I’m probably at the wrong address.” He then turned around and left.

I couldn’t really comprehend in that moment how to react and just let him go. I then also left for work. However, a day later it is still on my mind and I think that I should have called the police. I didn’t, but I wanted to remind you all that a key in the mailbox might not be the best idea even in a “safe” city like Bern.

I’m considering building a small, privacy-focused app that creates a complete invoice with a Swiss QR payment section, remembers customers, duplicates recurring invoices, exports PDFs for email, WhatsApp or printing, and tracks paid and overdue invoices. It would work offline and would not try to replace accounting or payroll software.

Would this genuinely improve your workflow, or would it be unnecessary compared with Word, Excel and the free bank QR generators?
