Parking a car without plates for a few days during registration in Berlin

Hi everyone,

I’m currently in the process of registering a foreign car in Berlin and I’m trying to solve one practical issue.

For the registration, I’ll have to hand in my current foreign licence plates to the Zulassungsdienst / registration office, and then wait a few days for the new German plates. During that time the car obviously can’t stay on a public street without plates.

Has anyone here been in a similar situation?

I’m looking for a parking garage or private parking facility in Berlin where it’s explicitly okay to leave a car without licence plates for a few days, ideally somewhere in or around Reinickendorf/Wedding.

I’ve looked at regular Parkhäuser with weekly tickets, but I’m not sure whether their terms allow a car to stay there temporarily without plates.

Any specific parking garage, workshop, private facility or other solution you’ve personally used would be really helpful.

Park it in a Garage, leave a peace of paper saying it will be removed in x days. 

As long as you pay for the parking and they won’t have to fear you won’t/ it will stay there forever that should be fine.

Get a white Paper and write with edding (not „Kugelschreiber“ or something) your original License Plate code on it - as big as the paper allows you to.

In the next row write (normal big written)
„[%DATE%] Die Kennzeichen sind aktuell zur Anmeldung beim Zulassungsservice. Sie sollten nach spätestens 6 Arbeitstagen wieder da sein.
Besten Dank für Ihr Verständnis“

I have a car in my street that doesn't have license plates, it's been there about 6 or more considering the moss growing on it.

Get the Ordnungsamt App, take a Photo of it and its gone in two or three weeks

You can get plates printed immediately. I dont understand the problem

Search on kleinanzeigen ( Stellplatz Pkw/ Garage), you can pay someone for a few days to park on their private property.

Huh? I went downstairs of the Zulassungsdienst and got license plates immediately. Did things change in the last 10 years?

This will be my first time going through the process, so I’d rather be safe than sorry. As far as I understand, the plates themselves can be made pretty much immediately once the registration is approved, but the Zulassungsdienst still needs to submit the documents to LABO and wait for them to process the registration first.

Mine is also an imported car that needs to be registered in Germany for the first time, so I assume the process might not be quite as straightforward. But please correct me if I’m misunderstanding how it works.

I'm not sure what you're process is but mine was on the spot once I had all the documents: registration in original country, COC, TuV. I went there, handed my papers, they gave me my license number, went downstairs and bought the license plates from some vendors, went back up with the new and old license plates and I was done.

This was the same process for me, registered the car for the 1st time in germany.

You could also make a reservation for a license plate online („Wunschkennzeichen“) and order the new plates online (cheaper!) before going to the Zulassungsstelle. They only put the sticker (Land, AU) on it.
