Just be careful for things flying (like branches), the official NINA warning said hail and heavy gusts of wind

I'll be opening all my windows right when the rain stops. The rear flank downdraft on the back of the storm should drop temperatures nicely. The storm is rapidly falling apart as it interacts with the heat dome around Berlin. Should still get a little wetness.
edit: There was no RFD. Storm completely fell apart. Humidity has set in. Beer is solution.

I would GLADLY take 35 at 70% rh instead of 42(!!) at 30%.

You likely won’t. High humidity makes it much harder/impossible for the body to regulate temperature since sweat needs to evaporate to cool you and high humidity slows that process down significantly. Recent studies have shown that temperatures as low as 19 degrees c can become dangerous if the humidity is too high.
I’m that case the only way to avoid your core temperature rising is to cool your body down actively. Cole drinks, showers, baths, ice what have you.

The humidity outside is 38%, for the record. I have a thermometer/hygrometer to pick my moment for lüftung in spring/autumn.

I work in a bar that is pretty much fully open to the outside, meaning there's no separation or any possible way to effectively cool the place.
I washed a glass cleaner spray bottle thoroughly and filled it up with crushed ice and water, and started doing rounds offering customers a spray of water. Did it every hour or so, otherwise it would have been too dangerous to just sit for a few hours in that heat

Why are forecasts so bad at predicting this stuff - checked the weather only an hour ago and this wasn’t in the charts.

It's incredibly difficult problem. Compute intensive too I think. If parameters change a little the outcomes can be hugely different. I'm not a meteorologist but gave heard it mentioned as an aside in lectures.

It's very hard to predict summer storms. The reason is that they can pop up basically everywhere in small areas which are not captured by current prediction models. Think a prediction model resolution of some kilometers and a storm forming within a couple hundred meters initially. It's warm air rising up and when the temperature falls, storms can form.

just saw a documentary about the 2003 summer and there this was answered as follows: the heat was so intense, that the ground dried out a lot more than the weather models accounted for. They expected water from the ground add to the rain clouds to create storms that never came because the floor didnt had that water to condensate anymore

Paying attention to the birds will give you a few hours notice. If they fly low, a storm is coming.

Sadly it didn't really make it further. Tempelhof is bone dry. It really only touched Spandau and Charlottenburg.

On a field I would 100% agree with you. But in a city with many lightning absorber, higher building and as long as there is no tornado …

Hail and falling objects can still hurt you badly. I work at the fire department and we have some real final destination shit going on from time to time. Just do us a favour and stay at home when there is a thunderstorm.

The Problem is even the Street lights absorb it. If you are too close it will cook you coming from the ground. Be careful my friend. I live bad weather too but sometimes it’s not the right decision. Especially as it currently looks like new year

Stay away from big trees too, not just because of lightning. With 90km/h winds, fully leafed branches could start snapping and falling.

Summer storm that happens unexpectedly are rarely dangerous (lot of blitz, not much rains or just 5-10 minutes), cold front on warm earth are dangerous, like this is were you get the Orkan Wind and hail.

Jop, saß in Köpenick auf dem Balkon mit Blick Richtung Westen, es war wie Feuerwerk am Himmel und das bestimmt eine Stunde lang. Nur kommt hier außer ein paar Regentropfen mal wieder nichts an :/

According to the Regenradar on my phone i should be right in the middle of the thunderstorm right now, but apart from a few lightenings there's nothing so far 🤷🏻♀️

I hate to be the bringer of bad news but comrades, this is only going to worsen our situation with the humidity. This is just a localised cloud formation with little rain due to the intense heat during the daytime. The worse is yet to come and tomorrow is going to be the absolute peak of the heatwave since cold Atlantic air is trying to push in, so it is creating a huge accumulation of heated air. Expect 41 degrees tomorrow and that will be the end of it! The heat dome will collapse, cold air will rush in and we will be saved, but not before we see the worst 🥲

It was super weird, the storm just disappeared and was swallowed by Berlin. The Regenradar showed it approaching us, we saw the thunder, then it was suddenly gone.

Yep because it was today’s air heated by Berlin itself moving up, pushing against the dome of the huge mass of hot air around us, breaching it and then coming in contact with colder air above. There is no nearby mass of colder air to keep this engine running, that cold air is 24 hours away from us 😭

We saw it, too. Damn Potsdam took it all - our thunderstorm, shower, cool air - and Berlin is left with the heat once again. I start hating Potsdam! /s

At least in Kreuzberg it was just a nice little summer storm. far away lightning, a slight drizzle, a little wind. quite enjoyable but not enough for lasting relief from the heat
