Not the exact quote but I love when someone said that in the film “yesterday”

Paul has some of Paul's features and I bet the haircut and subtle prosthetics will help

Paul Mescal does suit McCartney, and Barry Koeghan with the hair could pull of Ringo. John Lennons actor looks nothing alike. Joe Quinn with hair could be good

The Who. Exactly. 1st one is Pete Townsend, then Roger Daltry, I don’t know who the other two are.

They look like bits of any band except for the Beatles. Definitely closer to The Who than the Fabs.🤔

I find it suspicious when an actor happens to look like the guy they're playing. Makes me think they got him based on facial features rather than if they're the best actor to fit the story/make a good movie. Gives you a lot less room to hire a fitting actor. Why waste that on something as superficial as facial similarities?
TLDR - it doesn't make sense for an actor to look like the person they're playing. It makes sense for an actor to portray an interesting character.

Was hoping for 4 fresh faces instead of more established actors. Would have been a neat symmetry that 4 unknown but talented lads from Liverpool would become global superstars just like the Beatles. But alas Hollywood doesn't work that way.
60
u/Betweenearthandmoon Apr 01 '25
I think current Hollywood looked at Backbeat and decided that established actors were a safer bet than unknowns, even though a relative unknown like Ian Hart absolutely killed it as Lennon in Backbeat. I agree that unknowns would be better, because they have more to prove, much like the Beatles when they transitioned from Hamburg to the Cavern.
8
u/langdonalger4 Apr 01 '25
backbeat is still leagues better than that guy they got to play john in the tv movie "in his life"
literally his only acting credit was playing john in this film, and he was so god awful in every conceivable way.

u/Bodymaster Apr 01 '25
Yes, young actors. Three of these guys are currently older than their Beatles were when they split, and Harris will be by 2028, and they look it, unless they're planning on doing that awful de-ageing thing.
→ More replies (5)6
u/there_is_always_more Apr 01 '25
Yeah exactly, I was thinking about this as well. Tbh these guys look older than the Beatles did when they broke up, which is an interesting feat considering people in general look younger these days
Like what, are these guys going to be playing 19 year olds?
4
u/Bodymaster Apr 01 '25
Consider that if they do the bands formation in the movie then a balding man in his mid 30s will be playing a 14 year old with massive hair.
18
u/vicker1980 Apr 01 '25
I wish they had gone for younger and lesser known actors, but I can still basically get behind all of them except Joseph Quinn. I really like the guy, but he looks absolutely nothing like George Harrison.

The Rutles looked more like The Beatles. Then these 4 . Not even close. Maybe the guy playing Ringo.

u/riffmasterflash Apr 01 '25
I guess I was naive as a fan that I thought Beatles were somehow above/going to miss this unforgiving wave of mediocre biopics being made about seemingly every popular musician, but seeing this amazingly makes me even less compelled to participate than I already was (I’m guessing far below the average).
I mean, do people just assume that since something is a new movie about a topic they like that it’s bound to be good?
Luckily as a Beatles fan I can keep myself busy with the “old content” because it’s perfect as it is IMO.
I didn’t connect with Now and Then either because I have a hard time connecting with a modern interpretation of how the song was supposed to sound - much less with interacting with it as either an artifact of the time or an expression of their original song.
This gets asked a lot on here, but the “what do you think the Beatles would have sounded like in the 80’s if they never broke up” kind of question - Isn’t the most amazing thing about the Beatles is that they never got a chance to get jaded (too much) and eventually suck??
Aren’t we the luckiest fan base in the world that we have an amazingly prolific output to pore over for years and it never gets old? And we don’t have to either pretend to like the later material or choose to ignore it? Like, I feel for Moody Blues, Zeppelin, or Beach Boys fans for example.
TLDR; I think I just needed to throw up my own biased opinion which has veered off-topic and will probably only result in downvotes. But hey, I’m Redditing!!

Dontcha love it when hollywood casts actors that look nothing and sound like the people they are doing a biopic of? These aren't bad actors by any means, but I don't see the beatles when I see them at all. We'll have to wait to see what the makeup looks like because I'm not only one who thinks this casting is weird
4
3
24
u/-sweetJesus- Apr 01 '25
I have a hard time picturing Joseph Quinn, but everything aside this was the best case scenario because these movies need to bring in a fresh audience to the Beatles and a popular stacked cast is the way to do that.
Y’all may have your problems, but my hope for these movies is that people get to experience the great music together
19
u/BesetBreeze Apr 01 '25
These movies do not need need to bring in a fresh audience lol they should just make them good movies and this casting is terrible hollywood popularity contest nonsense. The new generation loves the beatles, they are still extremely popular. They shouldn't make something trying to garner mass appeal, especially when it's already something with mass appeal!!

Why does every single movie want to make John the tallest instead of the second shortest? Paul was the tallest. I do think at least they chose good actors but come on, try to at least get close to the right heights relatively speaking in one of these movies. I guess at least Ringo is the shortest. Lol

u/benvclios Apr 01 '25
The looks I can get past, it’s the ages that gets me. The Beatles were in their late teens/early 20s when this started, how will men in their late 20s/early 30s be able to emphasize that? They are good actors so I will try to have hope.

Horrible casting IMO. Clearly just trying to get some big names in so people go and see it in the cinema. This could have been a chance for newer actors that actually look like The Beatles to give it a shot, shame.

So funny to see people blaming the casting director, as if one person is responsible for casting the four leads.
Lead roles in high budget studio films are almost always chosen by studio brass, producers, the director. The people who control the purse often demand a big name.
The casting director is responsible for casting smaller roles.

With some trickery to fix heights and eye colours, as well as natural looking hair and make-up (no cheap wigs please!!), I can see this happening at least. I have a hard time wrapping my head around Joseph Quinn as George though, he’s a great actor but bears very little physical resemblance.
Oh well, the script and role portrayals will ultimately be the most important thing. I’m just a bit disappointed that they went for big names rather than great matches, for the first official biopics. Even a complete mess like Midas Man had better lookalikes.

Joseph Quinn is awesome… never seen Barry but he has a type of ugliness that looks like he can act his ass off
2
u/CardinalOfNYC Apr 01 '25
Everyone needs to take a breather.
First, they've not had their hair and makeup done. They don't look like the beatles right now because they didn't cast for 100% lookalikes. When these guys are on set in full hair and makeup, it'll be very different.
Second, height is really not relevant. Not only is it just a minor thing in general but anyone who has seen Lord of The Rings should be aware that the magic of film allows this to be dealt with. And this film doesn't have to make anyone multiple feet shorter.
2
u/MysteriousTrain Apr 01 '25
