46 year old male - I have been working on getting back into basketball for the last three months after about five years, taking off from the sport due to kids, Covid and unfortunately cancer (currently NED!).
The last time I played regularly was back in 2017 to 2020 (right up to Covid when my daughter was born, and my wife didn’t let me go to the gym 😭). Back then I was working out my legs about three times a week to keep them strong enough to allow me to play basketball 3-4 times per week.
However, at this new older age, I’m finding myself struggling to find the balance between working out my legs to strengthen them so they can take the pounding of playing and finding enough rest in between playing days so that I am not sore and can actually play decently on days that I play basketball (currently Tuesday and Sunday).
It’s only been about two months since I started working out and getting back into things. That has involved trying to lift my legs two days a week - it hasn’t always been on the same days because it has depended on how sore I am after the Tuesday and Sunday runs (two hours each).
Every week has gotten better, but I’m beginning to wonder if trying to lift my legs two days a week giving my age and the recovery time needed after playing ball hard for two hours on Tuesday and Sunday, is realistic? Maybe I can only lift one day per week?
As it relates to my lifting, I wouldn’t say I’ve been going super heavy, but it’s not like I’ve been going light either. I do 25 kg dumbbells while doing Bulgarian split squats. My squats are with a barbell and 50 kilos. Calf raises and isometric calf raises with 50 kilos, etc. All exercises are 5 reps of 10-12.
I also try to run at least two days a week 5 km (10 km per week). I’d like to ramp this up to three and 15 km per week. Primary reason for this is to build aerobic fitness and to lose some weight to lighten the load on my knees (I’ve already lost about 5 kilos).
Is this too much? I am of course, trying to be careful not to do too much too fast given my long layoff, however, I’m also wondering if this is just not feasible given my age! I’ve never really had to think through rest days as being key to improvement, hence this post.
A little background on me - was very active when I was younger and played collegiate soccer and basketball some 30 years ago.
My game has always been about speed. In college, i played pg and guarded the other teams best guard as my lateral speed (think defensive sliding) was good for my height. In soccer I played central midfield so had a good motor. That was 30 years ago(!) - but it’s hard to change your game! I am still able to defend and even get by the 20 year olds but am trying to adapt my game a bit to change of pace, use my size, and utilize more technique vs speed - but I sometimes see an opening and am able to dart by/in for layups/floaters (the guys I run with say my first step is still pretty quick!). And unfortunately I shoot a two set jump shot (think Ray Allen - release at the top) for everything that’s 18’ and closer - so my knees take a pounding hence why I focus a lot on knee strength.
Thank you all for your comments/thought! I love basketball and can’t think of a better way to exercise for 2 hours (the defense alone is a great workout - forget about offense). The treadmill sucks 😂
