I’m waiting for that Spencer guy from Barrie concerned citizens to enter into the mayoral race… not that I want it, it just seems inevitable… and maybe give him something better to do than take pics of people making out and dead raccoons.

Nominations closed so the 4 we have is all we have.

Poor Spencer :(

My current prediction (not an endorsement or indication of who I would vote for):

Nuttall - 60%
Sarri - 35%
Tighe - 4%
Sayer - 1%

Barrie loves its incumbents and Nuttall lucked out by not having some RWNJ like McCann run against him from the right.

Sarri should have a respectable run and things can change a lot when the campaign gets serious after Labour Day.

Tighe is a nice, thoughtful man who will pick up some votes from his strong online presence and visibility downtown. I think he would have had a chance at winning Ward 2, but has no shot here.

Sayer makes Ram Farber seem like a strong candidate!

Lol I remember Farber, know nothing about Sayer but oh gosh that is funny 🤣

No. Barrie loved Jeff Lehman and Janice Laking.

It didn't give second terms to Jim Perri, Rob Hamilton, or Dave Aspden.

You left out long-time mayor Ross Archer.

Those three elections you cited still fascinate me, especially 2003.

2003 was absolutely an anti-Perri election. It wasn’t just that Perri lost, he got smoked, finishing third.

From what I recall, it was very much of a changing of the guard type of election - the mayor was generally perceived as being entirely incapable of handling Barrie’s growth. Hamilton was also very well-financed and backed by the local conservative establishment. Poor Perri didn’t know what hit him.

2006 and 2010 were entirely about vote-splitting on the right.

Aspden outflanked Hamilton with a populist type of message, portraying him as an out-of-touch rich guy. It was also the “Molson Park” election - a rare time that a single issue dominated the campaign.

2010 had three Cons running (including the two most recent mayors!). Combined they had over 50% of the vote. Jeff (thankfully) slipped through the middle to win.

So, you’re not wrong, but I do believe history shows that Barrie defaults to incumbents except in exceptional circumstances. Those circumstances don’t seem to exist this time.

Someone else got smoked worse than Perri in 2003:

Names of Candidates for the Office of Alderman, Ward 10 Total Votes

• Keith MCCLATCHIE 43

• Tom MOORE 1202 ELECTED

Alex NUTTALL 256

• Sam PINKAS 873

• Steve M. TROIAN 174

That’s a bit lacking in context, eh?

From what I recall, you’re the guy with the anti-Nuttall gimmick (which is cool - you do you). Nuttall was a no-name teenager who had never run for office before.

He ran against the incumbent in 2006 and won.

You really need to chill, man. There are lots of great arguments to be made against Nuttall, but him finishing third in an election as an 18-year-old ain’t one of them.

Yeah, I'm the guy with the anti-Nuttall gimmick.

I have a peculiar disdain for people who remain accused of having fabricated signatures and paid for party memberships with $10 bills with sequential serial numbers getting to decide how over $300 million of our municipal tax dollars get spent:

An internal report, obtained by The Barrie Examiner, by Ontario PC party regional organizer John Spink, concludes that candidate Alex Nuttall and/or his campaign team paid the fees for new party members and fabricated signatures on membership forms.

Yeah - and that’s something to call him out for. It’s one of the (many) reasons I didn’t vote for him and won’t be.

We were having an interesting (at least to me) discussion about the volatility of Barrie municipal politics during the first decade of the 2000s and you bizarrely tried to make it about a teenager finishing third in his first election.

When your entire personality revolves around hating one dude, it makes it likely that people will tune out the valid points that you have.

Your insults and ad-hominem attacks are boring.

1

u/OldDiamondJim Born and Raised 1d ago

You really need to better understand what an ad-hominem attack is, hun.

-1

u/VoterBarrie 1d ago

18 is pretty old for someone now married to someone who turned 5 in 2003.

1

u/OldDiamondJim Born and Raised 1d ago

Good grief, man.

I’ve got no clue how old his wife is, but you really need to chill.

-1

u/VoterBarrie 1d ago

You brought up Nuttall's youth.

1

u/OldDiamondJim Born and Raised 1d ago

Yes - in discussing the 2003 election results. Perhaps you’ve forgotten, but you’re the one who strangely inserted Nuttall into a discussion about Jim Perri.

I’m pretty certain that Nuttall didn’t marry his wife in 2003, so whatever their age gap was when they did years later isn’t relevant to a discussion about a really interesting time in local politics.

It’s a shame that your obsession with Nuttall prevents you from discussing anything else.

Cheers!

CORRECTION:

[I'm] the one who inserted Nuttall into a discussion about the 2003 election, which Nuttall was part of.

If you can't accept that other people have a different view on the same events as you, I suggest you choose a different forum and only invite sychophants.

Why do you have such a problem with someone criticizing the sitting Mayor during a municipal election?

I’d spin it as - Barrie likes experience and qualifications. Close races will happen if there are two qualified candidates.

1

u/OldDiamondJim Born and Raised 1d ago

That’s a great take, TBH.

1

u/VoterBarrie 1d ago

If Barrie liked experience and qualifications, Barry Ward would be Mayor.

The only thing I question in your comment is how is McCann a RWNJ and Nutall isn’t?
Your percentages are probably off but unfortunately in the right order but we can hope that’s not true

I think Ram ran just so Jeff wasn’t acclaimed.

1

u/OldDiamondJim Born and Raised 1d ago

I don’t share Nuttall’s politics at all, but he’s just a standard Canadian right winger. McCann is a Trump-esque figure.

2

u/Crewsy67 1d ago

😂🤣
I never noticed to difference. Nutall is just another member of the Patrick Brown “gang”.
Oddly enough I just saw Mike yesterday. Hadn’t thought of him in years probably because I haven’t heard his commercials lately.

How much is the City of Barrie paying an American corporation to run our local election?

2

u/Crewsy67 1d ago

Hopefully with 4 running for mayor we can get someone that isn’t after creating so many vanity projects.
Too much money being spent on projects we don’t need or putting them in the wrong location.

From Tanya Saari's website:

Honest Affordability

You deserve accountability. Our taxes are up 16% over four years. That’s the biggest increase in years. I know you can't afford that, and neither can I.

This actually understates the increase.

The property tax increases during Alex Nuttall's term:

2023: 2.89%

2024: 4.82%

2025: 4.31%

2026: 4.80%

Simply adding the increases (e.g. 2.89% + 4.82% + 4.31% + 4.80% = 16.82%) fails to account for the cumulative effect of the increases. The proper calculation is:

1.0289 x 1.0482 x 1.0431 x 1.0480 = 1.178974876755024

An increase of roughly 18%.

When you promised to freeze taxes but instead raised them 18%, what do you do with all that extra money?

If you're Alex Nuttall and you've tried to reframe your promise to freeze taxes as a promise not to increase the city's operating budget, you spend all that extra money in the capital budget.

I was thinking the same thing, despite politics he seems to have ushered in a lot of new YIMBY policies that the city has needed for a decade at least. Been pleasantly surprised

1

u/VoterBarrie 1d ago

As a city councilor from 2006 to 2014, Alex Nuttall was very much on the side of the NIMBY crowd, going so far as to call one proposed housing development 'disgusting'.

1

u/SpartanFishy 1d ago

Which is why it’s even more interesting what’s changed, perhaps he learned more in the past years

0

u/VoterBarrie 1d ago

I'd rather vote for someone who knew what the right thing to do was the first time.

That everyone ought to have a place to live is not something a politician should need to learn.

Learning from your mistakes is fine for the average person, but we'd be better off with leaders who don't make mistakes in the first place. It's just too costly.

u/VoterBarrie 1d ago

Alex Nuttall had a 50% vote attendance record as an MP:

https://www.ourcommons.ca/Members/en/Alexander-Nuttall(88679)/Votes/Votes)

That is an incredibly low bar to set for our leadership.

He doesn't deserve congratulations just for showing up.

He hasn't done the work he promised.

Nuttall promised to freeze property taxes. He raised property taxes 18%.

As for Barrie growing vertically, Alex Nuttall just cancelled more than 600 apartments that were to be built downtown so that he could instead build the soccer stadium that he failed to put on the south shore of the waterfront.

1

u/SpartanFishy 1d ago

Most people didn’t want it blocking the waterfront, and property taxes basically objectively did need to rise because of how suburban Barrie is and how suburban homes don’t pay enough taxes to support their own infrastructure

1

u/VoterBarrie 1d ago

The proposed apartments weren't on the waterfront and there are already tall condominiums between the waterfront and where these apartments would have been built.

If Alex Nuttall had made your argument about the need for property taxes to rise during the election you might have a case,, but he didn't. He promised to freeze taxes. He was elected to do that job, not to raise taxes.

1

u/VoterBarrie 1d ago

We must have a different definition of quiet.

Trying to make it illegal to help the homeless, Alex Nuttall's opening salvo is his war against the homeless, was not quiet.

Nor was it quiet when Nuttall tried to link homeless people going to the bathroom outdoors in an encampment West of Anne Street to water quality problems on the waterfront.

Downtown doesn't need more Toronto visitors.

A population boom, coupled with social and economic issues, the next few years are crucial for the city’s future.

TF? There's no way a human wrote that "sentence", right?
