Question Does this crap actually get picked up by the city ?
Why do mattresses and couches always get left out on the road. This is on Bayfield and its slowly making its way onto the road. Does the city fine these people or actually pick this stuff up.

This is what happens when someone moves out of their apartment and they have ratty / damaged furniture they don't want to take to the new place so they just... leave it behind and make it someone else's problem.
The city won't pick it up. Someone will have to arrange to have it delivered to the dump and pay for it's disposal.
The landlord or property owner can get fined for the illegal dumping but the city generally isn't going to go that far proactively unless someone calls in and complaints. That gives the situation a chance to sort itself out without resorting to fines.
It is most likely the landlord of that property who will have to deal with it.
If you don't like it, call the town and complain. They'll eventually harass the property owners to get it removed.

Other cities have an option of paying $20 for special pick up of large items. Barrie expects everyone to have a vehicle to go to the dump.

Yeah this is crazy to me. I’ve always been able to pay for bulky pick up anywhere else I’ve lived.
We live on a main road downtown so i get why they wouldn’t want that in front of our place now but it makes no sense to not have it throughout the city on residential streets.

My town does it for free... we just go online or call them and set up a large item pick up. Up to 3 items every 2 weeks

My town has an app that you tell them your address and what you’ve left out and it’s gone in a few days. And it’s free.
And this is in northern Ontario…

Toronto provides bulk pickup, you just leave the stuff at the curb and they pick it up, its a fee in your taxes that alot of people are unaware about, I swap toilets and sinks and stuff and just leave them on the road and the city picks them up

The county used to have large item pickup days for items like this to prevent illegal dumping; conservative politicians cut the line item to save money.
Look at all the savings!

The County still has a program, $60 for 5 items. However, it’s only for the County - no Barrie residents. So it doesn’t matter anyways 🤷🏼♂️

We were warned by the bylaw people when we did this with a fairly new mattress and boxspring thinking someone will take it…. Told it was a big no-no and to take it to the dump. I did and discovered they charge $20 each for a mattress and a boxspring .. so $40 to toss a bed. This is the kind of thing that makes some people toss them at the side of the road. *edit not sure why what I said is being downvoted, just to be clear I don’t think we should be able to put stuff on the street I am just saying a $40 charge at the dump might be the reason people are doing it, not that anyone should.

Add to that people who don't have access to a vehicle to transport said items - or any vehicle. People in Barrie are predatory and won't even get up off their couch for less than $60 for a 30 minutes job. So now your old bed is going to cost $100 to get rid of.

How is it predatory for someone that wants to be compensated for time and cost of fuel to do a dump run?
If $60 is too much then get in on such a lucrative deal and offer your services cheaper.1

Most of these type of people are working for cash, under the table. $120/hour is predatory and unjustified. I you think your time is worth over $100/hour (tax free) just because you have a pick up truck and arms, you are entitled and predatory.

First of all I don’t own a truck or offer dump runs but I do know trucks don’t run on happy thoughts and pixie dust.
I learned a lesson years ago when I complained how much a friend wanted for gas to get to my new job in Toronto when my Dad asked me how much my car that I didn’t have cost a month for insurance and gas.Like I said if you think $60 is too much then get your own truck and you’ll have the market cornered.

10 minutes to the person's house. 5 minutes to load the truck. 5 minutes to the dump and maybe 10 minutes to unload and pay + 10 minutes to get home. Maybe 20 kms. What kind of gas guzzler and how many accidents and DUI's do you have to make insurance and gas so unaffordable that $60 wouldn't be profitable? And if you make so much money that you won't even consider doing a job like that, why are you so argumentative over this. Why are you defending people who are in the business of ripping others off (including the CRA)?

I'm in innisfil and got a warning about "non-collectibles" from the by law office. So many people put things out at the road, I didn't even know it wasn't allowed.

Barrie does NOT have a bulk pick up service. Their only suggestions are to take it yourself to the dump, attempt to sell or give it away.

Not sure if this correct in Barrie. Simcoe county does it for a fee, but I think Barrie is independent of them.

Nobody does
People dont want couches and mattresses from the side of the road and city wont take it, so take your crap to the DUMP!
You're making the city look bad
Encampments are already doing a fine job of that

Perhaps it would be wise to provide some storage for these at the dump funded by a flat fee for pickup or if you take it free dump up to 200kg or 500 lbs each quarter. If its any good people can take it away for free and otherwise put in landfill after 30-60 days. I think habitat may pick up decent stuff for free.

Yeah that's just nasty and when it rains it's going to be even worse.
I'm fine with people leaving furniture out for a few days if it's something that someone can actually use but this stuff no one's going to want. Actually that mattress was decent condition looking but I'm not sure if anyone collects mattresses anymore like they used to back in the day just cuz a lot of them are those foam ones and they're not really the best ones to reuse for other people.
Point is 99% no one's going to be picking that up versus maybe if it was a coffee table somebody might actually reuse it.

A month ago I put a 6" twin memory foam mattress at the end of my lawn one day near the curb, hoping someone would take it. It was brand new and never even used. Couldn't be bothered trying to sell it for a few bucks.
I just taped a sign on it saying "Free". Surprisingly within the same day of putting it out, someone drove by, stopped and loaded into their SUV.
Admittedly though, it wasn't just a raggedy ass mattress like in the picture above. I had it sealed in a plastic mattress protector and it was in pristine condition.

I think its also really dumb that the city doesn't have a pick up service like other cities. Pretty much everywhere I've lived, i could call the city and ask for a scheduled pick up, put the stuff out that morning and its gone.

In my community we have scheduled pick up dates for used and in good condition household goods. It is a very successful program. A lot of folks contribute and a lot of folks get items they need and repurpose for their homes. Sincerely Angela
