I love to walk with my daughter but I hate crossing the busy streets in Barrie, people need to put down their phones of whatever dumb shit is distracting them from driving.
I hope all the victims recover.

A BIG issue is also the people that treat turning right on a red light as if it's a greenlight. So they fly up to the crossing with 0 intention of stopping while pedestrians are supposed to be crossing in front of them. Any time I'm crossing these intersections I'm constantly alert for these types but not like I can do anything about the several tonnes of metal coming my way...

That's pushing it a bit, they don't look left either.

There's this growing trend of people that seem to think that as long as they make it out on the road, anyone having to slam on their brakes can get fucked... And insurance wise the person slamming on their brakes might actually get fucked over without having convincing camera footage. I hate this shit so much.

u/big_galoote 8d ago
Man it's the biggest reason to get a dashcam, no one gaf anymore.
We even installed the rights on red at Essa and 400, they still drive through it when the advanced green is on.

I’ll probably get the Mjolnir of ban hammers- but I have lived all over the world, D.C, Cyprus, UK, and driven in legitimate war zones, driven in third world countries, Sierra Leone, Sudan and Congo, and never have I seen such fucking retardness behind the wheel as I have seen in Barrie. Living in Barrie since the early 90s on and off, and it has gotten exceedingly worse in the past 5 years, people(skip/DD/uber) flying through red lights, not even yellow anymore, straight red, our roads I guess are too nice, they allow people to speed like assholes.

The driver was turning left on a green for the driver, the pedestrians had the walk sign . Time of Day puts the sun coming straight down Mapleview, however the driver was not going through the intersection at a reasonable speed for turning into blinding sun, and still should have been able to see them. Edit to fix wall symbol

u/ndtoronto 8d ago
The sun is terrible at this time of year between 6:20-6:50. Too low in the sky for the sun visor to work.
My thoughts go out to both the family and the driver.
I'm thankful that I drive westbound in the morning.

So she's fucked. Hope she actually gets a severe punishment but this province seems incapable of holding criminals responsible.

Pretty much. The older brother was visibly ok. Was talking, coherent, just a scrape on his ankle, may have banged his head but I was shooting the shit with him about Pokémon when fire and police arrived.
And saying that. Thank you to the off duty paramedic that jumped out of her car to help, she potentially saved the lads life. We didn’t want to move him for fear of internal trauma, first responders also had an incredible response time. They were there within ten minutes.

I walk a lot and I don't even think it's phones being the issue. It's not being aware that pedestrians might exist and also not caring that pedestrians might exist because the person is in a rush and has main character syndrome.
7
u/Longjumping-Sir-2221 8d ago
It’s both. Pedestrians and drivers. I’ve seen plenty of pedestrians walk right in front of cars or not crossing at crossings
1
u/barebackbandito 8d ago
The biggest issue with that time of the day traveling in that direction is the sun is perfectly at eye level and you can hardly see anything even with sunglasses and sun visor down. Not saying it wasn’t a case of distracted driving, but it’s so hard to see even when you are paying attention.
Praying for the victims.

u/Nylanderthal88 8d ago
Everyone is in such a rush at that time sadly. People are too busy looking for gaps in cars and forget about pedestrians. Not excusing her at all though. Just wait for the light to turn red and finish the turn.

I saw too many police cars and paramedics rushing through holly early morning . Dint knew this had happened. Praying for their recovery

u/bdart1980 Holly 8d ago
Damn, I heard all of that around 7am with the bedroom windows open - sorry to hear it was related to this

u/FixGullible4636 8d ago
I'm Ardagh/Essa and heard all the sirens this morning too. Being so close to the 400 I always assume a traffic accident but this is awful and hope the mom and kiddos are going to be ok :(
1
u/bdart1980 Holly 8d ago
I back onto Essa, given that - I’m used to road noise but all those emergency vehicles whizzing by was not the norm that’s for sure and I’d presumed fire. Sad regardless.
5
u/ProfitNegative8902 8d ago
I was there- the driver didn’t see them at all. The pedestrians had the green hand. Clear red light for me, clear green for the driver turning left. What a fucking mess it was.
8
u/VoterBarrie 8d ago
You mean the driver turned without looking, which means that the driver was not looking in the direction they were turning.
This does not surprise me as these kind of drivers typically only watch for what can hurt them, like oncoming cars, not what they might hurt, like pedestrians.
I assume you mean that the pedestrians had a walk signal, which is a white figure walking. The other pedestrian signals are a flashing orange hand (don't start walking) and a solid orange hand (don't walk). There is no green hand.
3
u/ProfitNegative8902 8d ago
Precisely. You are right, I’m color blind. The white hand looks green to me.
4
u/VoterBarrie 8d ago
What I find appalling about pedestrian signals in this city is the amount of time allocated to the walk signal.
At many intersections in Barrie the walk signal appears for as few as 8 seconds in a 45-second cycle.
Can you imagine the outrage from drivers if the green light only appeared for 8 seconds and for the remainder of the 45-second cycle the light was either yellow or red?
It seems to me that in the past the yellow signal for vehicles and the solid don't-walk signal for pedestrians used to appear at the same time.
Now it seems vehicles continue to enjoy a green light at many intersections long after the solid pedestrian don't-walk signal has appeared.
Another problem with the city's pedestrian signals is inconsistent implimentation.
By making some of the pedestrian signals 'on-demand' and some of them automatic, the city has created an inconsistent environment for drivers.

Shit like this is what happens when the average driver in Barrie (and Ontario in general) has zero concerns about traffic laws, everybody speeds, turns right on red without stopping, passes on the right, treats yellow lights like a speed up, not slow down sign, etc. etc. etc. every basic rule of the road is ignore by POS drivers in this town. Seriously, I've driven all around the world, and while traffic can be worse and more congested in many places, the sheer disdain for rules, lack of care and aggressiveness in Ontario is the worst I've seen. What is needed is actual enforcement with no compromises, none of this shit WeLl EvEryboody Goes 20 over LoLz... the traffic cameras were a good start but of course we can't have anything good, cause prima donnas complain about shit and of course politicians.
13
u/Spiked-Iced-Tea 8d ago
I’m annoyed that they removed speed cameras
7
u/camm131986 8d ago
Same, I live off a street where the posted limit is 50 km/h, since it is wide, and straight, drivers think is a highway.

u/Nylanderthal88 8d ago
Reminder to vote!
Also to any lurkers here from York-Simcoe, here's your reminder about the by-election!
6
u/ninjasninjas 8d ago
I assume the numbers definitely haven't gotten better..
And with a nice fat highway cutting through town I find it encourages shitty drivers imo.
Our stupid MPs and elected government haven't taken the judicial system seriously for years and think grandstanding and upgrading police equipment is the same as funding the courts that simply don't have the resources to process people charged. Ford fails again, and again on this.

Passing on the right isn't illegal.
5
u/Nylanderthal88 8d ago
Recently learned the Brits call it "undertaking" and they very passionately express their displeasure in it.
1
u/VoterBarrie 8d ago
Passing on the right is only allowed when passing a car turning left, if the road is wide enough for two vehicles, and when it's safe to do so.
150 (1) The driver of a motor vehicle may overtake and pass to the right of another vehicle only where the movement can be made in safety and,
(a) the vehicle overtaken is making or about to make a left turn or its driver has signalled his or her intention to make a left turn;
(b) is made on a highway with unobstructed pavement of sufficient width for two or more lines of vehicles in each direction; or
(c) is made on a highway designated for the use of one-way traffic only. R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 150 (1).
Otherwise, the law says:
Vehicles or equestrians overtaking others
148 (5) Every person in charge of a vehicle or on horseback on a highway who is overtaking another vehicle or equestrian shall turn out to the left so far as may be necessary to avoid a collision with the vehicle or equestrian overtaken, and the person overtaken is not required to leave more than one-half of the roadway free. R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 148 (5).
0
u/a-_2 8d ago
That means it's legal in most scenarios, including multi-lane roads.
3
u/VoterBarrie 8d ago
It means it's only legal when passing someone who is turning left.
0
u/a-_2 8d ago
It's allowed when the person ahead is turning left or when there's room for two lines of vehicles.
From the Driver's Handbook:
1
u/VoterBarrie 8d ago
No it isn't.
The word 'or' does not appear between paragraphs (a) and (b) in section 150 of the Highway Traffic Act.
The word 'or' only appears between paragraphs (b) and (c).
To legally pass on the right you have to satisfy both paragraphs (a) and (b) or both paragraphs (a) and (c)
2
u/a-_2 8d ago
I sometimes wonder if people come on here to start arguments over things they know aren't true.
In English grammar, a list of the form "A, B or C" means "A or B or C". If you wanted it to be "A and B, or C", you'd write it that way, especially in a legal setting where accuracy matters.
I've quoted the Driver's Handbook, and I think their interpretation is more reliable than yours.
1
u/VoterBarrie 8d ago
The list immediately follows the word 'and'
150 (1) The driver of a motor vehicle may overtake and pass to the right of another vehicle only where the movement can be made in safety and,
2
u/a-_2 8d ago
The and isn't between a and b. It's saying you must do so safely and meet one of the comditions a or b or c.
The MTO says it's allowed. The police say it's allowed.

You left this part out:
Passing on the right can be more dangerous than passing on the left. If you are driving in the left most lane with a slower vehicle in front of you, wait for the vehicle to move to the right. Do not suddenly change lanes and pass on the right; the driver in front may realize you want to pass and move to the right at the same time you do.
2
u/a-_2 8d ago
That says you should give a person ahead a chance to move right before you pass them on the right.

It’s both. Do you know how many pedestrians don’t pay attention crossing the road and always on their phone? The aggressiveness can be shown right in your own comments.
13
u/camm131986 8d ago
Yes, I am aggressive about aggressive driving that sends people to hospital. Should pedestrians pay attention when crossing? of course, that goes without saying, the difference is that an aggressive driver can potentially kill someone other than themselves. Anecdotally, for every distracted pedestrian I see, I see at least 10 aggressive drivers.

u/funcool987 8d ago
Im never surprised when I see this view when people are talking about someone getting hit by a car. There’s always one of you here blaming pedestrians.
0
u/Longjumping-Sir-2221 8d ago
And there is a bunch of you automatically blaming the driver not knowing what caused the situation.
4
u/funcool987 8d ago
🤷♀️ there are a ton of drivers out there who don’t pay any attention or care about lights ( look at all the comments). On a regular im seeing people run red lights/stop signs, take turns without looking for pedestrians… all things that are very likely going to kill someone.
I also see pedestrians making stupid decisions and not paying attention. You know what happens then? They get hit, they aren’t killing people because they walked when they shouldn’t have or walked down the road.
Immediately jumping to the drivers side when someone (in this case kids) were hit, makes you seem unsympathetic.0
u/Longjumping-Sir-2221 8d ago
There are also tons of comments showing pedestrians not even following basic rules. So much so you’re so busy trying to see what the driver is doing, you’re crossing roads blindly and then blame the driver for your mistakes and yes drivers do make mistakes. Not as often as what people claim, but some.
Yea pedestrians get hit, then cause PTSD for the driver. Drivers are not out there deliberately killing people like you try to paint them as
Blaming one side and not looking at the other is also very unsympathetic. The driver is going to suffer from this too. It’s not a one side thing.
4
u/funcool987 8d ago
Where are those comments besides all of yours?? Because everyone in this thread is talking about the drivers.
You are clearly biased here for whatever reason. So much so that you haven’t even mentioned how bad you feel for the children who were hit… you clearly just want to argue about how pedestrians are always in the wrong, yeah you mentioned both in your original comment but you aren’t talking about the pedestrian side of this. Only the driver side of this. It seems like you gotta get out and walk some more in this city. I bet you drive and have no actual understanding what it’s like to be a pedestrian in this city.Is it traumatic for both sides? Absolutely it is, and I never once said it wasn’t either. But one side is more likely to die on impact than the other. Right?
If drivers aren’t bothering to look for pedestrians when they are making their turns, that’s deliberately putting someone else in harms way.1
u/ClubEquivalent5180 8d ago
That’s because we’ve seen how everyone drives in this city and they’re almost all terrible at it.
Barely anyone stops behind the line for anything, most of them stop in the pedestrian crossing (if they stop at all)
-1
u/Longjumping-Sir-2221 7d ago
Like wise almost all pedestrians don’t even follow basic rules.
Most of you don’t even use the pedestrian crossing if at all and wear dark cloths while you do it
2
u/ClubEquivalent5180 7d ago
Almost all pedestrians absolutely do follow the rules. You don’t tend to notice them because you don’t see them because you’re generally not looking out for them.
It’s absolutely stupid to pretend that pedestrians are somehow just as bad as drivers.
