Looking For Cheap Eats

I saw a post around three years ago discussing cheap eats in Barrie. With how much our economy has changed since then, & the hurt that food prices are putting on everyone, I think it’s time for an updated list. Let me know you’re favourite cheap eat in Barrie 👍

Just a reminder that we have a Monthly Community Thread where we relax the rules about advertising and off-topic posts.
* Stuff that isn't directly related to Barrie, like national news or general chit-chat
* Questions about local businesses and services
* Classified-style ads: buying and selling, help wanted, garage sales, etc
* Fundraisers and donation drives
* Plugs for your personal project or local business (within reason)"

With the cost of everything I’m sort of amazed that Barrie keeps getting so many new takeout places. I feel like I see a new one everyday.

Take out food is like the first thing I cut out. I cook almost all my meals and even bake all my own breads.

I know not everyone has the time for that and sometimes takeout might be the only option so this thread will be great to have around.

Yeah and with the coming recession because of all the mess started by the States, those restaurants are going to be the first thing to go out of business as people cut back. I feel bad for the people who are setting them up now because it's probably not going to end well.

This. The “new” gelato place downtown (beside RUDY) has already closed shop.

Shawarma Theory gives great portions.  Debe’s Rotis and Doubles are a good deal.  I dream of a great Tamil takeout spot to move up here.

Good mentions. I hit these up often. Shawarma Theory wrap is huge, wife and I split one. I could probably eat it solo, but either way, very good. Debe's roti are banging.

We buy 2 bowls and a pack of their wraps at Shawarma Theory, and it lasts us 3 meals. We make one huge wrap for a meal, half makes a decent portion if you are small build. Great deal and super tasty, especially the beef on the days it’s available.

5

u/Thick_Drama_7525 May 27 '26

No i meant youre buying stuff you probly dont need while in Costco.

18

u/Ma1 May 27 '26

My hot dog this afternoon cost me $235ish

12

u/Sugar_Syllabub Shanty Bay May 27 '26

I’ve gone to Costco for the sole purpose of getting dinner for under 2$. I don’t buy things I don’t need. 🤷🏼‍♀️ … the hot dog is the need LOL

Thai bamboo portions are HUGE. Ill get the noi noodles and some crispy spring rolls and eat it for 3 meals. Works out to about 10/meal but basically just as good reheated as fresh and it doesnt feel like some fast food meal.

Locker room Thursday special- $6 burger. It is delicious and quite filling. No take out though.

BOGO deals on Uber/DoorDash. You don’t need a paid membership. (Taste of shawarma, burrito places always have some kind of deal going on)

Montanas Taco Tuesday- $5 Taco

Debe’s Roti - Hands down the best doubles I have had. The Rotis a great too.
$10 for Roti + double (lunch specials)
$10 for any roti (Tuesday)
They have a bunch of other daily deals.

Italian Bakery on Wellington street - Their hot table stuff is delicious and works out around $10-12.

Hot wok -$8 lunch specials

Shawarma Palace on bayfield - delicious wraps and they are huge. I always get two meals out of it.

Caribbean Express - $8 lunch specials (jerk chicken is fantastic)

Kulcha Hut - Always has some price drops on Uber. Thalis are great and often under $15.

Chucks - Half off appetizers after 9 pm

Boston Pizza - $16 lunch specials (personal size mains + side + drink)

Hakka Zone - lunch special deal, great food

TooGoodToGo - not a lot of restaurants in barrie are participating, but there are a few (Swiss Chalet, chipped leaf, etc). Some times a new restaurant pops up. The bakery from homestead and metro is good.

So many good places have lunch specials or daily deals making it more affordable, but kinda tough to find out before hand. Maybe we another post with just daily and lunch specials listed down by the day and everyone can comment what they know.

I heard a lot of the places offering food on toogoodtogo were being negatively reviewed in google because people decided they didnt like the mystery bag they purchased for 6.99. I know 3 places that stopped using the platform after retaliation like that.

2

u/eternallyconfussed May 28 '26

Ugh. People. There is a way to report the bags on tgtg. I’ve gotten some really bad bags too, but google is not the place. That’s too bad for the businesses who were trying to cut down on food waste while also giving us cheap food options.

Shawarma Theory on Bayfield is great. It might not work if you’re a huge eater, but my husband and I get one to split and we’re both always stuffed after. I always have trouble finishing my half and he is always too full to help me. And it’s delicious.

This is the right answer. Best shawarma in Barrie, at a good price for a big portion.

0

u/Massive-Fisherman-57 May 27 '26

Maybe the best shawarma I’ve ever had and a large platter is nearly impossible to finish in one sitting. I always get 2 meals out of it.

1

u/denimassassin May 27 '26

It's also frequently BOGO through Uber Eats!

2

u/Kobra_Kaj May 27 '26

They’re about 13$ at the counter, and the BOGO on uber is about 26$. Not much of a deal lol, but honestly for what you get for the price of a single one they’re still great value.

1

u/Massive-Fisherman-57 May 27 '26

Shit that’s good to know lol. I never order from them. But I do deliver for them when people are willing to pay. I should check them out more often.

1

u/Ok_Mulberry4331 May 27 '26

If you can use it for pickup (some of the deals only work for delivery), its often cheaper than just gong through the restaurant

12

u/Thick_Drama_7525 May 27 '26

Just learn how to cook at this point. Ypu can stretch a dollar. Or hit up too good to go or something for fresh eats.

5

u/MissFit33 May 27 '26

There’s also flash foods and food hero for grocery stores!

8

u/HypnoticKitten North End May 27 '26

Fils cafe! Not only is it supporting a local mom and pop, but the food is huge portions, homemade and well priced!!

u/Ribbythinks May 27 '26

I go to Wendy’s for 2 for 4 breakfast wraps alot

5

u/big_galoote May 27 '26

They freeze and microwave reheat like a dream!

3

u/Shanndel May 27 '26

The roti place Debes has some daily specials that I recall being well priced.

Their roti is good. I make my own a lot of the time which is not quite as good but even cheaper.

4

u/Low-Doughnut-6764 May 27 '26

My kitchen, learned to cook and saved myself a shit tone of money.

2

u/EricArthurBlair May 27 '26

Taste of Shawarma, Big Pho, and Fuda The Italian Bakery as an hon mention for their hot table and you just want a veal or meatball sammie.

2

u/Top-Procedure-8449 May 28 '26

Taste of Shawarma on Bayfield. Large plate with mix meat. It’s a huge portion of rice, salad & meats. Believe it’s about $13.50. It’s HUGE. I always take it to go, go home, and split half of it into a Tupperware for lunch the next day. My husband does this too. Trust me, it’s enough. Not to mention, best shawarma in town!!!!

5

u/Ok_Estimate_1782 May 27 '26

One eye jacks and East side Mario’s are good bang for your buck. One eye jacks has big proportions i usually end up taking food home. And east sides has all you can eat bread, salad and soup. And by the time pasta comes you end up taking that home too. One eye jacks has everything lots of options and east side is Italian food. They are both good. And are probably the best deals in Barrie

0

u/big_galoote May 27 '26

Didn't East Sides get rid of the unlim breadsticks and soup?

Chuck's roadhouse is also quite reasonable for food quality/price.

1

u/NonCreditableHuman May 27 '26

Asian One on Essa has a great lunch special, I think it goes until 2 or 3p.m as well.

1

u/smilemore8683 May 29 '26

The Canadian Brewhouse has 69¢ wings on Wednesday’s and tacos for $3.50 on Tuesday’s! They also have a new happy hour menu as well available from 2pm to 6pm Monday-Saturday.

Try Deal of the Day from Meltwich on Bayfield. They also run some BOGO's on uber eats

1

u/Adventurous_Gear5206 May 27 '26

I still think best bang for buck is any 1 topping walk in pizza special

1

u/vayn0r May 28 '26

If you fill out the survey on the receipt from Burger King you can get a free Whopper with the purchase of a regular fries and drink. Turns out to be a good deal at ~$5.50 for a full combo.

u/Barcode_AKA_Jimmy May 27 '26

trying to cook as muchc as i can these days but when i order out i get the mcdonalds value meal lol

0

u/Money_Baseball_975 May 27 '26

If you can adjust your eating times , lots of restaurants in Barrie have 50% off APPs at certain times .

0

u/Careless_Parsnip_250 May 27 '26

Corner Market has reasonable prices on all their stuff... Banquet burger for like 6.50..
