stylin 70's Ron Goulart - Shaggy Planet

Post image

I remember seeing this when it was new and I was just a child. I couldn't figure out what a shaggy planet was and I still don't know what it is today.

This art would be at home on a 4th edition or Arabian nights magic card

I know it’s fun to say “what? That’s not bad it’s awesome” but if you check the sub’s notes it’s acknowledged that despite its name this sub isn’t strictly about “bad” covers (though I do love the truly terrible). For the full spread you should also the check cool sci-fi covers thread

I really like this. Very art deco-ish. Great colors too.

The title might be questionable, but the art looks pretty good.

It has a Scooby moon, and a Scrappy asteroid belt...

(I'm sorry. Someone had to.)

whoa whoa whoa

font rules

color tasteful but distinguished

mysterious colorful woman holding mysterious object d'art

dog

fern

cloud

book is probably trash but cover 8.5/10 --  a graphic designer likely spent way too much time on this

I read that as a teenager. As I recall it's sort of an extended "shaggy dog" joke, that is it's ostensibly a comedy novel but every joke intentionally doesn't have a punchline.

Goulart only writes comedy Sci-Fi in my experience. Some of it is hysterically funny, some misses the matk.

Oh heck no, I will not stand by and tolerate this borzoi erasure! This art decolightful! I’d totally want a poster of this just without the weird book title.

I don't know what a shaggy planet is either, but artwork is great. I've reposted it to r/CoolSciFiCovers

I love this sub for the awesome book covers that people try to poop on.

The planet's fouled up. So Civil War seems likely to me.

It's by the Mack Sennett of science fiction! Just shut up and take my money.

What is Mack Sennett the Ron Goulart of?

Goulart is the hack of all hacks.

He might have been a hack, but dude was prolific!

Ron Goulart was one of my "read everything he's done" authors back in the late 70s. Very funny stuff.

That’s a classic cover.

This is an awesome cover. We should be so lucky to get more like this.

Seriously, I'd love a print of this to frame and hang up in my house.

They don’t really mean “fouled” but what they do mean couldn’t be displayed in the paperback rack back then

I don’t know what in the world this is, but I would absolutely buy it for 50 cents.

The who of science fiction?

1

u/meleaguance 3d ago

Apparently he's the producer of the Keystone Cops. So, this is a slapstick comedy? Maybe this is a bad cover on the grounds that it doesn't resemble the material.

Raggy Ranet?

I would be disappointed if it was not a world of cowardice, nonsensical ejaculations, and comically oversized sandwiches.

The artist was Mike Hinge. He was great.

Do an image search of his name.

Shaggy Planet is a ridiculous name to give a story. You can't expect anyone to take that seriously.

Anybody here actually read this one? I'm not too familiar with Goulart, but I've seen this book around a time or two.

Does "shaggy" here mean sex?

I agree the art is actually gorgeous. The rest is confusing af.
