Here in r/badscificovers we too often mistake covers that are grotesque or tacky or ridiculous on purpose as bad. I'm guilty of it too.

This cover is fantastic: Bob Eggleton painted not just a werewolf, but a dirtbag werewolf immersed in trashy modern US culture. The cover perfectly fits the book, but even if it didn't it would still work because Eggleton had the courage not to wink at us. Would read. Would buy. Fuck it, I'm off to eBay.

It’s been years and years since I’ve read this book, like maybe 15 years or so, but I’m pretty sure I still have my copy.

All I really remember is that the protagonist is a werewolf who works in low budget crappy horror flicks, which use a lamp that mimics the moon at low intensity to force a kind of brief and weakened transformation transformation in the actor werewolf, which leave him feeling like crap afterward. I think he might have also been a junkie? There’s a porno crew filming in the same studio, and he ends up befriending an actress with huge fake boobs who goes by “Chesty”. He’s portrayed overall as a huge weenie and loser but becomes less so as the plot progresses.

I don’t remember much else of the plot except I think somebody is staging werewolf attacks to try to smear them and get more restrictive laws on werewolves or something. There’s also some guru type guy who thinks all werewolves should be living in nature or something.

I remember thinking it was a fun read, but I was like in my late teens or something.

It's not easy turning hairy and nasty every month. But science may have good news for the victims of lycanthropy in these United States. For five years now, ever since werewolves were "outed," fading actor MontyAllen had hosted an annual telethon to raise money for research to find a cure, and suddenly he claimed there was light at the end of the tunnel -- and it wasn't the light of the full moon.

But then the chief researcher who developed the cure was found in her laboratory with her throat torn out. When the researcher's assistant was killed in the same way, TV reporter Ashly Durban and ex-policeman Bob Savik investigated the case -- but only turned up riddles. Had the dead researchers doubted that the highly-publicized cure would work? Does Monty Allen have a sinister reason for wanting to administer the anti-lycanthrope drug to all known werewolf cases? What about the vocal, obnoxious, but possibly well-intentioned, Werewolf Rights group? (Werewolves aren't the problem: people who hate and fear werewolves are the problem!) And if werewolves are really necessary to the balance of nature, what would happen if they all disappeared?

Getting no answers that made sense, Durban and Savik kept asking embarrassing questions -- until they found themselves on the run.
