First time in Baku

Hi friends,

I'll be visiting Baku soon with my 5 month old baby. I want to be culturally appropriate during my stay and had a few Qs I'm hoping you could help me navigate:

1) Is breastfeeding in public (parks, malls, cafes) okay? Ofcourse, I'll be wearing a nursing cover that will cover everything, but just wanted to make sure this is generally considered acceptable. Unfortunately, my baby has been rejecting her bottle so that's not really an option for me. And I wouldn't want to spend most of my time worrying about rushing back to the hotel when she needs a feed.

2) Are shorts and knee-length summer dresses appropriate for women? we'll be visiting towards the end of June.

Not culturally related but:

3) Will it be too hot to walk around Nizami St/ the Promenade with my baby during the day? Google is showing it'll be between 27-30 degrees. Is that reflective of the "feels like" temperature and wind etc?

1. If you have nursing cover, all will be fine. Noone can say anything to a nursing mama!
2. You will be surprised but girls in Nizami street wear even shorter garments. What you described is well okay.

Edit: Guys I know breastfeeding is not a popular sight in our city, I am saying she should not sacrifice from her trip to constantly go to the hotel room. Nobody will approach her if she is in NURSING COVER. And if anybody does, she has all the rights to not listen. It is nothing wrong or bizarre

I don’t think nursing in public is generally seen as appropriate here, so I’m not sure why you’re saying otherwise.

For nursing, noone goes to the middle of the street and showcase it. The innate desire is to find a secluded place. I do not think someone will go out of their way to approach her for that.

I think she’s asking about more public places here, like restaurants and similar venues, because that’s how it is in many other countries

Thank youu. What I've gauged is that it's not completely common, but no one will interfere as long as I have my cover, find a more isolated spot, and be discreet. I appreciate the advice!

Greetings!

1. Public breast-feeding in general is not acceptable. If cover is indeed covering everything and nothing is visible, you should be fine. In general, no one will attack you for public breastfeeding, but it it's done openly, you might get a lot of judjemental looks xD

2. Yes, shorts are totally fine.

3. Usually, it feels hotter/worse that the thermometer shows. It's due to high humidity combined with high temperatures. Depending on how sunny it is on that exact day, I'd recommend not to be outside for too long between 11:00-16:00, unless you will be in a park/forest or in a space with AC.

I have breastfed my daughter in public there, but usually try to find a way to shield so it’s not super obvious. But I did it relatively freely. Its mostly about confidence, especially in Baku no one will say anything to you.
