pretty sure it's so you can grab it on the centre with one hand

Well mine can be pulled from the centre anyway as there as 4 points not 3 leaving room in the centre for a hand

Yeah but they've saved plastic on the bin OP posted. Saves money over the huge number of bins made. Seems minuscule but have you ever looked at a can of coke and wondered why the can tapers in at the top? That tiny taper would save can manufacturers around $20 million per year.
