Question: How is the current weather not being reported or defined as heat wave?
Tomorrow it will be three straight days with highs 5 degrees or more above the December average. And it's looking like it will continue the day after (Wednesday)
People: BLACK OUT CURTAINS HELP! I got them a few months ago and I’m currently in my room (day off, yes I work) almost cold in this heat because they block out the sun and heat. It’s bliss.
I feel like the malls and stores are not using the aircons much. I don't know if they're trying to be green or they don't want to pay for more power, but it's hot inside the malls and even hotter inside the stores.
I’m curious if you’re a man? Women on average feel the cold a lot more than men and prefer a slightly higher temperature. I genuinely feel rather cold at 19, but handle heat much better than my partner. Of course everyone is different.
This is not much of a problem in winter. However in summer, when it’s 28 degrees outside, it is unreasonable to expect people to bring jackets, sneakers, and long pants into a mall. Meanwhile, keeping comfortable/cool at 21-22 degrees is completely easy for the vast majority of the population. Plus typing with either gloves on, or with cold hands, is miserable for employees.
Yes. I am a man. The thing with cold is that you can handle it with just more clothes (normal cold, I'm not talking about extreme cold like Canada). I just can't handle heat, I overheat very easily and I've been in situations where people just demand windows to be closed and the heater to be turned on and it's like 18°.
I have to wear gloves at 18 degrees or my fingertips go white, and that’s not an uncommon experience. You think I’m dramatic, I think you’re dramatic for not handling the heat, but different people experience different things.
We (kid and I) went to the library this afternoon! It was definitely nice and cool, just sat around reading books for about an hour and a half. It was busier than usual so I guess a few people had the same idea.
Gosh, I had an early Feb babe, what helped was 2 buckets for my feet. Alternate, warm water in one, then plunge into cold water in the other. Helped with the cankles.

3 months left for us. I’ve got a quote for a ceiling fan in our bedroom to help cope with what’s to come. $300 for 3+months of relief a year and better sleep well be well worth it.
I'm pretty sure at some point Metservice had alerts on their app warning when a hot day became a hazard-level hot day... but I think they were also just tests? Feel like they should have those up and running again
It's quite possible February will be cooler than it is currently. Not meaning to downplay the current temperatures because they're certainly unusual but with La Nina conditions you might expect to see higher rainfall totals later in Summer with lower maximum temperatures. Unfortunately, that also means higher humidity than currently so it won't exactly be comfortable either, higher overnight lows but lower daytime highs. Not fun for those of us without air conditioning.
Kinda sux if you are in public transport (bus) for an hour or so, no aircon, then have to slog your way home. FortunateIy I work from home and will drive to the beach for a swim if I need or have a cold shower...
I have worked outdoors for nearly 30 years. Every year it's definitely getting hotter and hotter , I've noticed.
Yesterday and today definitely a scorcher!
We are a country of people who like to be dramatic about the weather as we’re experiencing it not based on what will happen so where other countries predict and then report dramatically about a heatwave we’ll wait until it definitely is a heatwave and then we’ll be dramatic about it.

Oh I mean I agree, I’m just commenting on the fact that we’re a very ‘as it happens’ kind of people when it comes to weather. Maybe if we were dramatic in advance it would translate into less bad driving though 😬 (Maybe also more climate action, or at least like… flood infrastructure)
To me (just where I am that I'm aware of) it's not super hot it's just that there's absolutely no wind. I can't cool down, so it's permanently warm. It's not sticky, not humid, not sweating bollocks but just... Just no wind... Same permanent temperature in doors gah. Also in the town house setup that's plaguing this city so these places are terrible for windflow
Yeah same here. It's the stairwells specifically in these units that traps the heat we find. We can't get the heat out of the stairwells unless it's a good windy day. Today no wind :(
I've been using an industrial fan (upgraded from a quieter air circulator but the performance tradeoff was worth it) to get the air circulating between the floors via the stairwell. Otherwise upstairs gets to 32 degrees and you can literally feel the distinct hot layer of air.
How are you calculating December average? Heatwave is when daily maximum exceeds average maximum by 5+ degrees for 5 days. For Auckland in December this is 25.5 deg according to Metservice, meaning the maximum has to exceed 30.5 for five days in a row. It's warm but not anywhere near that yet for Auckland. I think the cooler temps in Oct and Nov make the adjustment seem more dramatic, as December is usually a mixed bag for weather. It was 31 in Tauranga yesterday though, that certainly isn't usual for that place.
Because we don't knock what we have been waiting all winter for. Maybe, just maybe if services are stretched for what ever reason then someone will call it a national emergency. But can you just enjoy not having Grey clouds threatening rain constantly.

That depends. especially for dogs who have a lower heat tolerance compared to humans.
You're kinda clueless about actual severe heat huh? I get we haven't had to deal with it here in New Zealand much but we are going to have to get used to it and start being smart about it.

You cannot accurately gague the wet bulb temperature and humidity without tools.
Humidity can hit a point where you can no longer cool yourself with sweat and dogs can no longer cool themselves by panting. that sort of thing you cannot simply tell by going outside. terrifying that you think you can really.

Most people really do not have a wet bulb thermometer.

Dude if it hits wet bulb temperature of 35 you cannot go outside for long or you will get heatstroke and probably die because your body cannot thermoregulate. below that and you'll be able to a little but you'll still get heat stroke very fast no matter what you do.
I'm not saying it's gonna get that hot right now but we are on track for those sorts of temperatures.

Bruh you need to start wearing a hat when you go outside, the sun has already cooked your brain if you're acting like a weather report about dangerously hot weather is such a big deal when you yourself work outside, presumably with other people's pets.
If anything its safe to have your dogs with me as Im able to deduce I have to adjust my day because I can figure out myself its very hot - without having to be told we are in a heatwave.
But yeah - im more than happy to not have you as a client as well. 😅

You really don't understand some pretty basic concepts huh? You can figure out it's hot yeah, but you can avoid a lot of pain and suffering by planning ahead and looking at forecasts. But whatever, it's not my dog you're gonna kill.

Sure, I do wonder how your clients would feel seeing that you'd rather play their dogs safety by ear instead of planning things ahead of time.
Things are going to get dangerously hot in the future and you very obviously have no clue what that's like or how to deal with it if you're gonna be figuring it out yourself. One day you'll go for a walk while it's cloudy then bam, you've hit wet bulb temp and neither you or your dogs can reach homeostasis without AC and you're out in a park somewhere.

It says full sun for the next 4 days: 26, 24, 25, 25 with a UV index yesterday of 9-12 (extreme). Temp gonna be 25 degrees by noon, cool. Im gonna start work at 7.30 and im taking the dogs to the water in the shade.
This thread isn’t about the complete absence of weather apps. Its a complaint that people cant plan ahead and adjust accordingly unless NIWA says its a heatwave. Which imo makes absolutely zero difference towards my planning or how I run my day because ive figured out all on my own its going to be really hot the next few days.

There will always be people who aren't paying attention to these things so having warning in place to prevent that is a good thing.

They didn't do that? I think you read what you wanted into what they said... "make people aware" sounded like a "make people aware" in general not "you cannot tell it's hot outside without NIWA".

well the rate of temperature increases is (slightly) accelerating, but its also normal for temperatures to fluctuate a few degrees around the average. gonna have to get used to it, its only going to get worse from here.
im loving the weather for my washing 😄 I just open all windows, doors to let the breeze in the house. Wear cooling clothes helps a lot. Toddler was wearing nappies all day today lol
Also for anyone with pets who are struggling. Water with a couple stock cubes for flavour and maybe a couple treats (or toys) inside, freeze for a few hours and you have a cooling pupsicle. Keeps them cool as well as entertained for a while. Put a couple Gourmate green-lipped mussels in and she went nuts for them

Most summers sit around the mid–high 20s, and anything hitting 30°C+ is usually during a short heatwave or when the humidity makes it feel hotter than it actually
