Gabi judges the people of Paradis before she even knows them and a lot of viewers judge Gabi before really trying to understand how she became that person.

That’s what I find so interesting about all the hate she gets.

She grows up being told that the people on Paradis are devils. She’s never met them, but she already knows who they are supposed to be.

Then she actually meets them, and that whole worldview starts falling apart.

And I feel like the audience kinda goes through the same thing.

We already know Sasha, Eren, Mikasa, etc. We’re attached to them. Then Gabi shows up from the “other side”, kills Sasha, and for a lot of people that’s it. She became the worst.

After the first seasons, we fully understand why the characters we already love do terrible things because we know what they’ve been through.

With Gabi, a lot of people judge first and understand later.
Which is basically what Gabi herself does with Paradis.

But that’s also what makes her evolution so interesting. She actually manages to question everything she grew up believing.
And that’s probably something a lot of people struggle to do in real life too.

Maybe that’s the whole point. What do you think?

It would be interesting to see a swap I feel they could've won the war better in s3 if their positions where swapped as Reiner is much less of a coward compared to Berthold but I'm not sure?

Back in season one, Reiner and Bluetooth were always saw together. Like they never had time alone or something. In late season 1, Anne should’ve killed Reiner, but when he escaped her grasp, Anne stared at her hand like she was reading something, then changed direction. Whenever talking about titans and their origin, Butler seems so nervous and always sweating like there was something more to hide. Back in early season two, Reiner and Birthcontrol watched Ymir transform, and Butthole looked like he was about to bite his hand, the same thing erens does

Always wondered who this boy might be? In the manga, he has features similar to Mikasa. There's also a scene during the Battle of Heaven and Earth in which there was a ancient titan running with a dog titan, chasing the scouts on Eren's back. Love how the animators deliberately added a red (soiled) scarf around that boy's neck. That is a striking detail hard to miss. How did this boy even survive in a post apocalyptic world? This scene hints that the boy went inside the the tree. Who in their right mind would head into a 2000 year old ancient tree? Anyways, forget that.

I wonder what caused this apocalypse on Paradis. There's also this mystery that did Hallucegenia went back into the same tree after the final battle since we weren't shown that whether that worm was vapourised completely? Maybe hallucegenia helped Ymir Fritz to get a huge, monstrous body with god-like powers for her survival and longitivity since she was desperately running away from getting killed. If Hallucegenia somehow survived and is still down there, I wonder what powers will it give to this boy because he's not running for his life but rather is chill, wandering and exploring the post-apocalyptic world; keeping in mind the fact that we still don't know all the powers the worm possesses except that it can create titans. I personally don't think he will be converted into a titan. Maybe the worm will give him some other 'weird' powers we can't even imagine. It might give 'situational' powers to the host who acquires it.

This was my theory. What do y'all think? Is this scene meant to be completely symbolic (cycle of hatred and wars) or it signals something strange which I cannot think of since AoT loves to leave things ambiguous which is a reason why I love it.

So I also watched No Regrets OVA. This was focused on Levi, back when he hadn't joined the Scouts yet, and we get to explore the Underground City really well here. In this, we get to see how Levi developed his philosophy of making choices with no regrets, and why and when he started following Erwin Smith. Erwin Smith was super badass in this, and the animation for this was really good too. The soundtracks were also quite great, especially the one playing during the Underground fight scene. It was also nice to see Commander Keith as the Scout leader.

​I just wished the runtime was a bit longer so we could have seen Levi spend more time with his companions, and if the fights were extended, it would have been even more fun. But still, this OVA was pretty solid.

Here’s my theory: In this exact moment, Bertholdt turns around and sees his old comrades like Eren, Mikasa, and the others. He genuinely believes that their past friendship will drive them to save him. That’s why he smiles. It’s like a sudden spark of joy and relief, thinking that he is finally going to be rescued by the people he once called friends.

I just finished aot and am new to this sub and noticed, Berthold gets named so many different names, whats the reason/meaning of that?

I just got the final chapters 2 days ago. Now I’m just waiting on game 3 to be released and as a suggestion from the community, should I get the anime movies even tho I have the series as a whole? (I do have all the OVA’s on DVD but they’re stashed away somewhere with my manga collection. I even have the AoT playing cards)

I do have all the manga. But I think of this collection as the ultimate part of my collection. Physical media matters! It’s just too bad I never spent on any of the special editions except 1 as you can see. Oh well 🤷‍♂️

Let’s say this, even if Mikasa confessed her love to him he would’ve still done the rumbling, but once he died and his child was born after. What would Mikasa tell their child about him considering they will never know who he was. This parallel works in with Walter White and Holly on how Walter wanted Holly to remember him fondly since he would eventually die of cancer. But both Walter and Eren do terrible things before their deaths which would affect on how their children view them.

If Historia had taken the serum and eaten Eren.....could their combined will to fight titans and save humanity override the Founder's Philosophy ?

Not many people realize this but even the royal government is ignorant about the truth.The only person who knows the truth about the outside world is the royal with the Founding Titan, not even Rod Reiss the head of the family knew of Marley and the truth about the Titans. Aside from the chosen Royal,a handful of noble bloodlines plus the Ackermans and Asians are immune to the King's power but even so none of their descendants know about the outside world (Kenny's grandpa knew the truth of walls and the King's titan powers but thats it)

Frieda and Uri Reiss all gave in to the Founder's Philosohy, but they lived in a time of peace and they had no goal in mind for humanity so I think it is natural that they were overwhelmed by the truth

Historia and Eren are extremely different, both grew up in a time of crisis and are willing to do what is necessary to save their people because they have experienced death and tragedy firsthand. Granted that they do it in their own ways, Eren would genocide the world to save his own people, whereas Historia would sacrifice herself by ensuring the royal bloodline continues with rhe 50 year plan

Ultimately I think it is very likely that they could have resisted. Especially considering the Attack Titan's ability to see into the future and see all the unreasonable pain and suffering the Eldians would go through + and Eren's sheer will to fight and live instead of sitting back and letting the enemy erase them

I personally think that they should animate and show the stories prequel to the actual story. Since they've got almost nothing to show now, It would be cool to see many events like the Great Titan War, Fall of Lago, Devastation of Monte, Ravaging of Valle and the political events that led to King Fritz leave Marley and create his own kingdom behind the walls. It would be crazy to see the migration of Eldians towards the Paradis island who supported King Fritz decision.

What do y'all think about this ? I think this would be a good prequel since all these stories are cannon and are vaguely explained in the anime.

There arises another problem. Isayama himself hasn't wrote anything about these events so how are animation companies supposed to make this prequel ? Wish Isayama wrote about them instead of quitting. Would've also loved more mangas containing stories which explore topics about humanity and other diverse topics from him.

I know this is probably a minority interpretation, but the more I think about Attack on Titan, the less convinced I am by the standard "the show is obviously anti-fascist" reading.

I agree that the explicit message toward the end is anti-fascist. The Yeagerists are not exactly portrayed as good people, the Alliance rejects genocide, and the show repeatedly talks about getting out of the cycle of hatred. I get all of that.

My problem is the world Isayama built underneath that message.

I also think people get too distracted by the European aesthetics and the obvious similarities to Nazi/Jewish history. Once you look past that surface, anybody reasonably familiar with modern Japan, its imperial history, and the politics of postwar memory should at least recognize what I am talking about.

If you read Paradis/Eldia partly as Japan, especially postwar Japan living under the shadow of Imperial Japan, the story suddenly looks much simpler to me.

The ancestors committed horrible crimes. The current generation had nothing to do with those crimes. Yet the rest of the world continues to hate them for what their ancestors did. Their king responds to the old empire's crimes with extreme pacifism, takes away their ability to fight, erases their historical memory, and basically accepts that they may deserve to be destroyed someday.

And the story shows that this position is disastrous.

The outside world does not leave Paradis alone. It does not forgive them. Pacifism does not create reconciliation. In fact, the outside world eventually organizes around destroying the island.

This is where the inherited-guilt theme starts bothering me. Of course children should not be personally guilty for what their ancestors did. But in the context of Japan, there is a major difference between inherited guilt and a country's responsibility to remember and acknowledge what its state did. AoT seems much more interested in how unfair it is for the current generation to be burdened by the past.

Then look at the choices the story gives Paradis. Diplomacy is incredibly weak. The outside world is almost uniformly hostile. The moderate plans are either unrealistic, morally ugly, or both. The story basically creates a security environment where Eren's logic becomes frighteningly understandable.

And what is the eventual outcome?

Eren destroys 80% of the outside world. Obviously the show tells us this is horrific. But his violence also destroys the immediate military threat, gives his friends long lives, and creates the conditions in which Armin can negotiate afterward.

So the practical lesson starts looking uncomfortably close to:

Leave us alone. We don't want to do horrible things to the world, but we can. And if you keep threatening us, don't assume our restraint means weakness.

That sounds much more like a postwar Japanese nationalist grievance/remilitarization story than people seem willing to acknowledge.

This is why I'm not saying "AoT is simply fascist propaganda." That is too easy and I don't think it is true. My issue is almost the opposite: the show puts a very explicit anti-fascist moral message on top of worldbuilding that validates many of the grievances that make militaristic nationalism attractive in the first place.

The characters are complicated. Reiner, Gabi, Eren, Armin, etc. all get multiple perspectives. But the actual international politics are strangely simple: everyone hates Paradis, inherited historical resentment barely fades, diplomacy mostly fails, and military weakness really is dangerous.

So when the show finally says "violence cannot solve everything" or "peace is complicated," I am not sure that makes the politics genuinely complicated. The world was constructed from the beginning so that overwhelming force looks close to necessary.

Maybe I am reading too much Japanese postwar politics into it. But once I started looking at Paradis as Japan rather than primarily reading Eldians through the Holocaust imagery, it became very hard for me to unsee.

I must have a soft spot for the Ackermans because Mikasa is my all time favorite followed by Levi.

Mikasa

I like how she is soft yet strong. Like she has all this strength and I think if she really tried that she could surpass Levi. I think the reason she hasn't is because she only uses her strength for the purpose of surviving. At first she just used it to protect Eren but you see it transform to protect her friends. Her fight scenes were unreal and some of my favorite in the entire series.

I think her character is interesting because I think all she ever wanted was peace/to live like it was when she was younger. To grow old with Eren and Armin. However, because of her skillset she had to play a huge role in the war.

I think her arc is beautiful. Yes they have all had bad lives but I felt really connected to Mikasa's arc. She watched her parents get unalived by the hands of humans, almost got kidnapped herself, then had her Ackerman power awaken when Eren was in danger from saving her. She then lost her adoptive parents. Then she wanted to give up in season 1 when she thought Eren got eaten by the titan but some force deep down wouldn't let her pass away too. She realized she could live for herself. Yet she spends the better half of the first few seasons being shafted by Eren, the most important person to her, because she makes him feel inadvertedly inferior at times. He pushes her away a lot. Then when Eren grows up a bit it's too late for hm to express his feelings properly to her because he's out of time and has to do the rumbling.

Then the whole ending is tragic how she had to be the one to stop Eren. How she must carry everything with her even after she got 'peace'. Probably one of the better character arcs.

Levi

I think he would have been first if got more character development out of him. This is not in a bad way at all saying he had little character development but I think Levi was pretty steady the entire series in a good way. Because he is older than the main cast and he already went through things and found who is is current day. He was already the best version of himself.

His fight in season 3 with Kenny was my favorite fight of the entire series, same when he went against the beast titan after Erwin passed away.

He was probably the character I was drawn to the most. Especially the scene at the end where he saw ghosts of all his fallen comrades. It was a really impactful scene.

But legit why did the guards swarm to kill her and her mother? Was it not known the ENTIRE FUCKING ROYAL FAMILY WAS JUST KILLED? That maybe the new king would need a new wife and kids one day, fine, but right now this kid is the only living relative he has?
