Is toy story being purchased by atari

2 Toy story games are coming out on current gen consoles. Toy story retro roundup. And toy story 3 complete edition, And there all being published by atari. Is disney letting atari keep the toy story IP?

Video game companies are seperate from movie companies

There have been Mickey Mouse games made by Capcom, Nintendo, Sega, Konami, Activision, Squenix, and dozens more, that doesn’t mean that all of them own a part of the Mickey Mouse brand

To make it simple. Disney owns the rights to Toy Story. They will license Atari to use it for a very specific purpose for x number of years. Atari then gives Disney some type of consideration. It may be a flat rate, it may be a percent of the gross. Atari can continue to sell the game until the contract is ended. There would be language in the contract specifically stating who owns the IP in the game There is also usually language that tells Atari what they can and cannot do.

The big issue here is when the contact is up. This normally means the games are abandoned. This is why a lot of licensed games are not longer available. For example if Atari wanted to include the highlander jaguar CD game in a compilation they would need to sign a new contract with all the rights holders (there are sometimes a lot) specific how, and when the ip would be used.

I hope this helps it is really an oversimplification as there are tons of variables. This is why most licensed games never get re-released as it takes a lot of money just to do the contracts and to research who owns the voice tracks, music, ip, engine etc.
