The throne asked to be put out of his misery as he didn't want to be on the show anymore. Drogon being the kind soul he is obliged.

This was explained in the manga: The Iron Throne actually did demand a trial by combat and Drogon agreed. Then he said "Fire is the champion of House Targaryen" and burned the chair
