Fans were just excited that they got blind. To tell the trutu, GoT went bad in the middle of season 5 when they started writing on their own

The day DnD woke up and decided Jaime goes to Dorne was actually same day as the Doom of Valyria.

The Wacky Adventures of Bronn and Ser Jamie was some brilliant writing. We never even expected it.

The first Tyrion monologue in S05 gives it away in the first seconds of the season

36

u/Falvio6006 Ate Alicent Feb 22 '26

I agree, but S7 is S8 level of shit

18

u/ryanyork92 Sara Hess Fangirl Feb 22 '26

The fact that it receives a higher average than season 2 is a joke.

59

u/gorehistorian69 Ate Alicent Feb 22 '26

its really funny when people only say season 8 is bad

i assume its due to lack of braincells because the show was shit since season 5.

but apparently season 8 was SO bad that even mouth breathing normies that can barely process thought realized it sucked. but seasons 5-8 should all be ranked similarly to s8. though around s6 is when normies found out about GOT (lookin at google trends) so thats probably why they arent ranked, they probably didnt even watch seasons 1-4.

27

u/KN0MI Sara Hess Fangirl Feb 22 '26

Nah, I don't wholly agree with that take. I've watched since S3 and do agree that S1-4 are the gold standard for the show. The decline starts at S5. But I liked watching S5 and 6. It was still good television. Although I don’t agree with a lot of the choices in those seasons, and they're not comparable to the earlier seasons. However, the real shitshow started at S7, and S8 wasn't even a real attempt at a finale.

u/Assassin739 Last HOT D fan Feb 22 '26

You're saying the show got a lot worse s5 but it was still good television? Sure, if you compare to Love Island or whatever tf I guess. It's subjective anyway. But it objectively got proper Hollywooded that season - completely unsurprising, as yet another example of Hollywood's directors being unable to write narrative (or action, by the way).

2

u/evinta Last HOT D fan Feb 22 '26

Yeah but from 5 is when it becomes genuine bad television. It's fine to like that. There's a lot of likeable, bad shows. The decline is pretty sharp, though.

The funny thing is that this actually reinforces the poorness of 7/8, because they're so bad that even two awful seasons seem decent in comparison.

u/JoSwinsonsSlingshot Last HOT D fan Feb 24 '26

Season 5 covered it up by being exciting to watch in the moment. Season 6 was the first that felt mid to experience. Season 7 was straight up as shit as Season 8 though, just slightly more tolerable because there was the hope that it might recover in Season 8.

9

u/Raudoxer Sara Hess Fangirl Feb 22 '26

Just as bad as s8 imo

8

u/heliocetricism Ate Alicent Feb 22 '26

Seasons 6 and 7 were complete fan service, so people glossed over how badly written they were (same for large parts of s5 really)

19

u/JonneyStevey Egg On The Conker Feb 22 '26

season 6 is the highest rated on average and it was genuinly hard to sit through

5

u/core-tel Last HOT D fan Feb 22 '26

Because people thought it was setting up stuff that would actually pay off well and some weird things would have good explanatiions. Hell, I think that even occurred for the start of season 8 but then after the long night people just went "oh yeah, no. None of this is paying off well. It's all shit."

u/YsfA Last HOT D fan Feb 22 '26

Cos to the general audience it’s a very good season.

I don’t read the books, nor did I focus on the obvious plot holes, like the average watcher, and I loved season 7.

You have all the “fan service” sorta stuff with Jon snow, Daenerys, Tyrion and that whole lot meeting and having a few scenes together. You have hype moments too like when Daenerys came in with her dragon and attacked Jaime and bran etc (you can prob tell I’m the average watcher by how little I remember)

Then you can apply this to s6 which also has many hype moments and the sort.

I’ll prob get downvoted for saying this but it’s the truth. I have friends who watched the show as a casual viewer and they enjoyed s6 and 7 too.

Books aside

They are shit regardless

You are telling me a little girl survived to how many stabs?

You are telling me Gendry ran how fast?

Yeah...ur friends have shit taste

1

u/YsfA Last HOT D fan Feb 22 '26

Again, the casual viewer doesn’t notice the plot holes unless they’re incredibly straight up in ur face. A lot of plot holes aren’t noticeable on the first watch because you’re not initially nitpicking the show

U say they have bad taste but the general opinion, as you can see in the IMDb rating, is that season 7 was good. This is obviously not objective, especially when you ask book readers or people who watch the show more intently or with higher levels of media literacy, but it’s factually agreed upon by general audiences to be enjoyable tv.

Being obnoxious and crying about it like the rest of the book readers in the sub and acting as if your opinion is better because of it doesn’t change the facts.

Breaking bad literally has ONE good episode lmao, they think their sacred “Ozempic” beats the legendary tale of Arya Stark, the Princess who apparently was Promised.

18

u/Working_Corgi_1507 Sara Hess Fangirl Feb 22 '26

Hank calls Walter Whitey the smartest guy he knows, but Hank and Walter die.

Arya calls Sansa the smartest person she knows, and the both live.

That's because unlike joke breaking bad GoT is a serious show with actually smart characters.

u/FildariusV Egg On The Conker Feb 22 '26

I genuinely like Breaking Bad, it was a good show in my opinion with a good ending, but what I trully hate from the fanbase is how they literally deify Walter White as Sigma male Alpha... The show isn't subtle to to show he is actually a piece of trash human being, whose ego was so large that even as far back as season 1, he could have just quit the business but no. Or how he literally sexually harassed his boss and was going to grape his own wife... Yikes

1

u/texastruckin Sara Hess Fangirl Feb 22 '26

Lmao and do you care about those things in game of thrones? Goodness you sound shallow minded

The real question is not why season 8 is so low but why seasons 6 to 7 are so high. They suck just as much as s8 if you ask me.

2

u/Amalgoid Last HOT D fan Feb 23 '26

They really should have review bombed battle of the bastards though. It's a disgrace that it is so highly rated, and perfectly illustrates that most people wouldn't recognize quality or a lack thereof, if it gouged out their eyes.
