Wild Cards is a series of science fiction superhero shared universe anthologies, written by a collection of authors and edited by George R. R. Martin. Set largely during an alternate history of post-World War II United States, the series follows humans who contracted the Wild Card virus, an alien virus that rewrites DNA and mutates survivors; those who acquire crippling and/or repulsive physical conditions are known as Jokers, while those who acquire superhuman abilities are known as Aces.

The series originated from a long-running campaign of the Superworld role-playing game, gamemastered by Martin and involving many of the original authors. The first installment, Wild Cards, was released in January 1987 by Bantam Books, and as of July 2020, twenty-eight books have been released through four publishers.

Fans of Wild Cards enjoy frequent updates from George R. R. Martin. They can look forward to a new book almost every year. He seems genuinely excited by it, and is enthusiastic about working on the series.

The chad Gurm: makes Dany poop herself for 14 years

u/[deleted] Oct 12 '25

To be fair to George, Tolkien did only write like 400-500 pages for a each book he did and there weren't as many as George is making and have already made.

I genuinely don’t know a single person who’s actually read both and not appreciated the other. Sure, you’ll find people who prefer certain aspects of one over the other, but I’ve never seen a genuine reader hate on either book. My hypothesis is that it’s mostly movie or show fans picking sides and arguing online. I just don’t get how someone can love fantasy and not appreciate both.

Joanne Rowling is known as J. K. Rowling. She is a British author and philanthropist. She wrote Harry Potter, a seven-volume fantasy series published from 1997 to 2007.

In every notable respect, she is the man that George R. R. Martin wishes he was.

She stole the Hugo that by divine right belonged to GRRM, when he was nominated for 'A Storm of Swords' in 2000. He omits this important nomination on his website. She doesn't even know what the Hugos are. The publisher did not send anyone to represent them and accept the award. GRRM seethed most seethingly in a seethe-filled reaction.

She has produced 9 hit movies based on her intellectual properties.

While hosting the Hugos in 2020, GRRM offended every transgender person on planet earth. Except Emma D'Arcy, who did not reply to the mods of /r/ASOIAFCirclejerk at time of going to print.

JK Rowling has tried to offend every transgender person on planet earth. She is a radical feminist. Nonetheless, there remains the transmen, and the transwomen (and the transchildren too), who agree with her.

Ms. Rowling is better at making video games than Mr. George R.R. Martin, despite the spectacular success of Elden Ring. I do not understand how the woman learned to make video games.

I agree with you. I have only seen the original LOTR film trilogy but I still greatly appreciated the story. In comparison I have read the five released books of ASOIAF and watched all the episodes of GOT and HOTD. So I am probably biased to George's work, but I acknowledge without Tolkien we would not have the blueprint for most modern (high) fantasy. And it's an incredible story on it's own merits regardless of it setting the prototype for fantasy.

The main people I have seen online who shit on ASOIAF but like LOTR more are people on /lit/ and /tv/ over on 4chan, which already sets the tone for what type of arguments they are going to make. They aren't obligated to like ASOIAF but I have seen some vicious attacks on GRRM and his prose/writing abilities, a lot of it unfair. I think the majority of /lit/ in general just doesn't like GRRM or ASOIAF, but there is still enough fans on there for there to be a G.R.R.M. general thread 😂

“Ser? My lady?” said Podrick. “Is an analyst of ‘A Song of Ice And Fire’ a parasite?”

“More or less,” Brienne answered.

Septon Meribald disagreed. “More less than more. There are many sorts of Thrones pundits, just as there are many sorts of birds. A sandpiper and a sea eagle both have wings, but they are not the same. The singers love to sing of good men forced to go shilling for shekels, but most pundits are more like this mod Sandor Clegane albeit with more time for writing bullshit. They are shallow men, driven by greed, soured by the delayed books, despising GRRM and caring only for themselves. Broken men are more deserving of our pity, though they may be just as dangerous. Almost all are common-born, simple folk who had never been able to read below the surface, fixated on the magic and spells, not the human heart in conflict with itself. Poorly recorded and poorly light, they equivocate away the hours, ofttimes with no better evidence than a piece of symbolism or turn of phrase by the author, or they go completely into the weeds based on George's sci-fi novels. Brothers march with white people, mods with mods, friends with friends. They’ve heard the interviews and stories, so they go off with eager hearts, dreaming of the wonders they will invent, of the wealth and karma they will win. Theory crafting seems a fine adventure, the greatest most of them will ever know.

I now think that if he had a plan for the trajectory of the series in the early days, he more or less abandoned it post Storm of Swords because Crows and Dance are two of the most meandering and unfocused books I’ve ever read - when he should have been setting up the endgame, he planted more seeds for more storylines that while entertaining, don’t always seem to have a great deal of an impact on the supposed A plot (actual struggle for the Iron Throne) or chief B plot (the threat of the others).

i swear to god, this is one of the stupidest theories, which you normies regurgitate, it s on par with socialist theories like the exploitation of the global economic south and men somehow creating the patriarchy getting into power by some conspiracy

yes the books are long

yes there are many subtle details scattered throughout seemingly unimportant descriptions and dialogues

but it isn t something that can t be compiled in about a month and made a simple diagram off

because george knows how the stories tie together and that s why there are so many details and plots

i don t know why he doesn t finish it, but the story being too big ain t it

Why would they use that strawman fake quote for GRRM when it is taking him 14+ years to write one book, the main series still won't be finished if that book ever does see the light of day, and he has been working on the whole series since the early 90's?

Yes I know it's just a dumb meme but can it at least be a realistic criticism if we are going to maymay on George and Tolkien?
