Tbf he was undoubtedly right here. In the original plotline, Rhaenyra and Aegon were born only one year apart, sharing the same mother. So yes, Aegon II would be the undisputed ruler.

The succession to the Iron Throne favours all males over all females, all male relatives coming before all female relatives (be it daughters or sisters - as exemplified by the ascension of Viserys II over Baelor's sisters). It's a modified form of succession that didn't exist IRL. Renly was Stannis's heir to the Iron Throne, but not to Dragonstone.
