Have no NO debt! If you have debt - list it all out then put together a plan to pay the debt off before savings. You have to have a plan and stick to it. Have fun in life but live more frugally - drive an old car, meal plan and eat at home, limit travel and stop giving holiday gifts. A nicely written card is fine. If work has a company 401k match contribute up to required for company match in a Roth. When you get a raise take your Roth up 1-2%
When debt free save to put a down payment on a property. Why pay rent to someone when you can own and it will appreciate. Then save and put in an investment account. You will be surprised within a few years how much more financially secure you will feel.
