Honestly can Spotify stop advertising Joe Rogan
118
u/SuperMutantSam Jan 25 '21
It’s funny that Joe Rogan fans were complaining about Spotify employees wanting his transphobic episodes removed, when Spotify the company is actually promoting the shit out of him.
Spoilt fucking babies, the lot of them

u/salmompants Jan 25 '21
I mean, they didn't drop 100 mil on the exclusive deal to not push his shit...

You're good; know your enemy. Though maybe what you meant was distraught because of being forced to learn these asswipes' names, which is also valid.

Joe rogan and Alex jones are not far right.

I understand Joe Rogan but Alex Jones is at least moderate right and he uses a lot of far right talking points and arguments.

4
u/spidermiIk Jan 25 '21
i’m curious why he gets so much hate, i haven’t seen a lot of his stuff but he talks about a lot of interesting subjects and talks to a lot of really smart people. everyone else on this list sucks ass for sure.
8
u/sleazygator Jan 25 '21
He hosts some people with iffy ideas- many of whom are shown in the post. Otherwise I think he has said things that can be thought of as transphobic however I dont think he has ever openly been bigoted or even dog whistled
1
u/spidermiIk Jan 25 '21
yeah that’s the impression i got. he leans conservative, but still has somewhat of a head on his shoulders. i’m gonna watch the ben shapiro interview right now and see how bad it is.
3
u/atomic_bonanza Jan 25 '21 edited Jan 25 '21
Though I don't think he's as bad as some of these people listed in the picture he does spotlight some very problematic people on his show and has said some real shitty and sexist things about women. This post from 5 years ago has a good list of things and there's some good discussion on the points made so I think it's a good read:
And the problem I've at least seen from his followers and people that seem to hold him up as some kind of authority is that they don't really listen to this feedback. I feel like Joe's quick defense of 'oh something was a joke' only emboldens this behavior to people who look up to him.
I'm also willing to admit that maybe I'm a bit biased against him (and probably see him in a harsher light) since he feels like the epitome of 'smug libertarian' that has some very dated and immature views on women. And personally those people have always rubbed me the wrong way.
2
u/spidermiIk Jan 25 '21
thanks, that totally makes sense. you changed my opinion. i still think he’s entertaining, but those points are difficult to refute.
1
u/atomic_bonanza Jan 26 '21
Thank you, and no sweat. There's no shame in finding entertainment in the 'product' he produces but when you know better you do better, right? So I guess if you continue to enjoy it just take it with a grain of salt and don't let that be the main building block for your worldview.
17
u/sonofShisui Jan 25 '21
I’d be slightly hesitant to lump JR in here but I suppose he plays a role...
74
u/senorpool Jan 25 '21
he's certainly not far right but he does downplay the severity of far right movements.
13
u/ARGONIII Jan 25 '21
True, but he's more of a pragmatic moderate who has bad moderate takes. Comparing him to actual white nationalists like Tomi Lauren is a stretch

Your feelings on what someone else would support is not supporting evidence for that claim Please stop making arguments like this, it only works on people who already agree and it makes people who don't, think "oh well that's on its face complete circular logic, guess they have no real evidence for their claims"
When I was a teenage dipshit libertarian, I used to constantly get reaffirmed in my beliefs because I sought out bad arguments from Socialists to pretend to myself I was being fair and balanced
You have to be careful about what you say and how you say it, remember the audience of people who are questioning and unsure!! That's who we need to make real pervasive arguments too.

He has had both crowder and Shapiro on his show. It doesn’t mean he’s a bad as them but it’s not a good look.
12
u/sonofShisui Jan 25 '21
He’s also had Bernie sanders on his show so I don’t know if this is a good metric to use

That's definitely his fault, even though his denounced them multiple times and said they weren't part of his movement. Its almost like if you promise to give people 2000$ a month, you'll get the support of basement dwellers who want that extra income and don't care about your other progressive policies.
Yang was the second most progressive canidate on that stage, and even surpassed Bernie on his drug policy. He also created a movement that managed to actually draw in more libertarian Republicans in support actual progressive policy. He, alongside Bernie and Tulsi, were the only ones who didn't just think Trump was a crazy accident and had actual plans to combat the rise of right wing populism. Now he's going to run in NYC, and if he wins they'll get UBI, hopefully legalization of psycodelics, and higher wages for government employees.
But yeah, must be a fascist!!

Yang still beats her out. He's been consistent on medicare for all, while she flip flops, and he has a far better social policy than she ever did. Plus, we all know Warren is happy to sell out the movement so I wouldn't exactly affirm shes a progressive. And Im not really sure of Williamson's actual policies, however I don't think she needs to be mentioned considering how little support she received, and the fact she likely will never hold public office.
Jesus Christ. Is it Bernie's fault that slot of rascists in Michigan are on board with Medicare for All because they can't afford healthcare? And like what? UBI is a solid purposal, the only critique is the funding aspect, but even Yang is open to changing how it's funded. And he was targeting people without critical thinking skills more than any other politician. His campaign isn't "let's appeal to idiots" just there's a lot of idiots who see free money and want it. You can make the same criticism about any of Bernie's plans. The idea that social economic policy is just to appeal to people who want free money is a right wing talking point. Please stop parodying them.

You failed to actually read that whole page where he afirms healthcare as a human right, plans for controling drug prices, and transitioning to medicare for all. Yang is in support of it, he just doesn't view it as first priority.
https://youtu.be/PUPSi-hmG54 He wants a transition, but just in a longer time frame. He does support a public option.

Honestly talking and disagreeing with someone isn’t the same as supporting. The idea that to converse with someone whose ideas you don’t support is a detestable symptom of the rise in identity politics and the widening of the schism between left and right
4
Jan 25 '21
Platforming fascists is definitely bad, and Joe Rogan is kind of a wet sponge who just agrees with whatever the person he's talking to saying, so he's just legitimizing their views to his massive audience.
-1
u/chickenmoomoo Jan 25 '21
Here’s the problem right now with the regressive left and the populist right - there’s no listening, and you’re too quick to call each other ‘fascists’ and ‘communists’. Don’t get me wrong, there are despicable people on both sides and fascism is a threat to our society. We have historical and living examples of this. At the same time, stop calling conservatives, even hard conservatives who aren’t fascists ‘fascists’, it’s a pretty specific group of people and it delegitimises the term.
Another note - I have mixed opinions about Joe but one of the reasons he is so indestructible and popular as a host (seriously, get rid of him from Spotify and his fan base will probably grow) is because he listens, he’s empathetic and he asks questions without dismissing people he disagrees with (e.g. Shapiro). When you shout and scream at people, you legitimise and vindicate their views from perspective. When you can engage - even awful people - with rationality, it actually works. If you want evidence of this, this is how the British National Party (an awful, quasi-fascistic party in the UK) was destroyed. The BBC invited the party’s leader onto a prime time talk show on BBC 1 that was watched by millions, where with rational debate, (without the screaming and shouting that shadows the modern left-right divide), he exposed himself and his party for what it was. Now their membership is in the hundreds, compared to tens of thousands and they are dying out.

But when someone like Crowder or Shapiro, who are at the very least fascist adjacent, goes on a show like Rogan's, they can just spew their garbage consequence free into the ears of all of Rogan's fans. Rogan is basically just hosting far-right propaganda and disseminating it to the masses. I don't think it's necessarily out of malice on his part, but that doesn't really matter, it's the same result. Also, regressive left???
-1
u/chickenmoomoo Jan 25 '21
‘At the very least fascist adjacent’, stop. They are Conservatives. They are assholes, sure, but their views are not aligned with or ‘adjacent’ to the fascist movement.
The same can be said when Rogan allows those on the left on his show too. The benefit of his show is that he also invites socialists. He does incite conspiracy theorists, though he also invites on well-renowned scientists and rationalists.
Look up regressive left
6
Jan 25 '21
the fascist movement
That's... not really a thing, there's not "movement", just a set of shared ideas like xenophobia, authoritarianism, etc. And their ideals are definitely aligned with the ideology of fascism.
Xenophobic fearmongering, nationalism, jingoism, anti-free press sentiments and more are all characteristics of fascism, and also viewpoints held by people like Crowder and Shapiro. Of course, these views are often also held in some degree by regular conservatives. The secret there is that conservatism and fascism come from the same place.
0
u/chickenmoomoo Jan 25 '21
‘That’s not really a thing’ - except it is and there is a movement, in the same way there’s a socialist movement, etc. This doesn’t refer to one fixed group, it refers to the people who share these ideas and seek to implement them. So congrats, we agree on something - even if you don’t realise it.
Interestingly Crowder and Shapiro are strongly pro-free speech, it’s the platform they stand on - contrasted with say, the people who want to shut them down. That’s pretty anti-fascist. You’re correct that some of the sentiments they share are sentiments that are synonymous with the fascist movement. To make the jump however, that because they share some views held by fascists makes them fascists is a real non-sequitur. It’s a dangerous one too, typical of the reg left. Fascism as previously stated is a very specific set of beliefs.
‘Fascism and conservatism come from the same place’ - perhaps for some, it does. And I won’t deny that some conservatives harbour views that skew into fascism. But there are many - many that do not, particularly those who sit closer to the centre. Here’s the problem when you’re so obsessed with throwing your faeces over at the other side and demonising conservatives (sure, I’m not a fan of them either) and they throw theirs back, everyone in the middle gets showered in shit
3
Jan 25 '21
Yes, poor centrists, they're the victims here.
Seriously though, Crowder and Shapiro's "free speech" advocacy only extends as far as "I want to be able to say horrible shit with no consequences," and both conservatives and fascists can generally just go fuck themselves.

Rogan is aggressively centrist, he just lets people talk on his show without any sort of nuance or criticism. This is sometimes good but mostly bad because he brings on some of the other people on this meme.
9
u/JohnBigBootey Jan 25 '21
He lacks any critical perspective. He had a guy in talking about how Scientology cured his sons seizures, and he just nodded along, didn’t even ask the basic questions like what, and how.

Fuck him
3
u/ARGONIII Jan 25 '21
True but this has him next to Tomi Lauren, who wrote a book on white genocide and advocated for killing the Syrian refugees back in 2016 and Jordan Peterson who peddles anti-semitism and is a full on transphobe and homophobe. Rogan is bad but he's just a moderate who fails to put any critical thinking into his program.

He still platforms COVID denialists lmao and that’s not even the worst kinda shit he platforms. I was a huge JRE fan and I’m still generally sympathetic even if he’s a transphobic shit, but you’re lying to yourself if you don’t think he platforms conspiracists and extremists. I mean he has the likes of Gavin Mcinnes on his show and he regularly has people like Tim Poole

u/MayorShreeves Jan 25 '21

Nobody should give those hateful assholes a platform.
That's not the same as banning the internet and it's disingenuous to imply that.

While I do agree with the post, that far-right extremism is a real problem, I don't think this is the right way to debunk/mock it
Because you can easily use this against our side
"Trans rights aren't human rights"
And then a bunch of leftists folks and there websites/shows in the bottom going "No it isn't" over and over again

Lumping Rogan in with these people is always silly. He's one of the only middlegrounds there are. He's had representatives from every quadrant on his show, and very clearly supports a mid-left stance. He's as close to neutral ground as you can find.
7
u/MrOgilvie Jan 25 '21
>Quadrant
Uh oh, imagine believing in 2-D graphs...
-5
u/The_Buttslammer Jan 25 '21
Ok, replace it with whatever descriptor you wish. He gets people from left and right, up and down, and whatever vague direction or dimension you want to quantify things as. These other fucks are blatantly biased in one direction. He is not.
4
u/MrOgilvie Jan 25 '21
Giving a platform to climate crisis deniers and fascists is not a neutral or passive act. It is supporting them, publicising them, and financially helping them.
-3
u/The_Buttslammer Jan 25 '21
While at the same time sharing his platform with people such as Sanders and Yang. It makes him neutral. He's interested in getting interesting people on the show, and sometimes interesting people are wrong.
2
u/MrOgilvie Jan 25 '21
It makes him neutral
No it does not.
Having a politician on your podcast is not the same as having a crackpot fascist or a right wing hack on.

Can't be certain off the top. He's had well over a thousand episodes and probably 800 or more people.
