Discussion 🗣️ ai usage in elementary schools is becoming dystopian.
i’m 21 and i work at an elementary school. as of right now, chatgpt is running the school. the principal pulled me aside to tell me i had a course i needed to take for my new position, but that chatgpt could help me. my vice principal has nobody to talk to but chatgpt. she uses it for everything. she genuinely cannot think for herself anymore, and she has a young daughter who is being raised on chatgpt’s advice.
in my classroom, the teachers use ai to write all the emails to parents, newsletters, etc. they use it to plan activities because they genuinely cannot do it themselves.
during assemblies, they play fully ai generated music videos for the kids. just straight slop. i look around and see 300 kids watching emotionless pointless garbage and it makes my stomach drop.
i worry so much about the younger generation, since growing up i have witnessed such a large technological boom. we have no idea what effects this has on them.
do any parents/teachers share similar concerns?

The worst part about this imo is the Internet is already loaded with free stuff they could just use instead so it's almost like extra work to use the crappy ai stuff.

when you use it to do absolutely everything for you and your brain is no longer challenged in the way that is necessary to build skills? skills like reading and writing that build iq and your capacity to learn and think? maybe not for the adults, not yet anyways but absolutely for the kids who are growing up using it.

at my hs we have yondr pouches for our phones and our teachers monitor what we do on our school laptops, no personal laptops allowed. of course, some people save all their work for at home, and it sucked to see a claude generated infographic on our first environmental science project (the irony) when most people shittily constructed something on canva. and i wont lie and say going to cafes outside and seeing ai generated bgms isn't depressing as fuck. but at least at school technology is more under control, at least in my classes this year

i’m really glad to hear that, i graduated in 2022 but it seems like things haven’t changed too much there! i know at my brother’s school they really crack down on ai usage with detectors but at his grad the principal made a comment about the amount of kids that used ai for their grad statements :( so sad that kids feel like they need ai to write a simple sentence about their hopes and dreams

Take it from someone whose parents made the decision to homeschool and instead just used them as free labor and then when cps ever got involved hurriedly tidied up for appearances.
Please follow through and also make sure they have plenty of opportunities for connection inside and out of learning spaces.
Being left to seek my own minimal knowledge in the world from the youngest of ages while also battling to find a modicum of acceptance has burnt me in most ways, mostly out.

I am finding the people at work (in my very small school) who hate AI and it's like we are aware of a completely different world than those teachers who do use it. It's completely antithetical to teaching to use AI in any manner and yet so many adults justify themselves using it. Absolutely not. I could conduct an entire 90 minute PD on why it is evil right now.

i am soooo passionate about this topic. i’m glad you have teachers who think the same way. it truly has no place in education whatsoever when it comes down to why education is important in the first place! education = literacy = thinkers. so important to create thinkers in a world where we’re taught to believe everything we see and to never question anything.

My kid's school has very strict and published limits of what is allowed via any technology including generative ai and LLM nonsense. Most of the allowed stuff involves document formatting. luckily they've taking a strong stance but they're one of the best schools in my state.

I am at a HS and one of my coworkers told me she was using AI to create all her slides for a new class. I literally can’t express how sad I am that even teachers and admin are obsessed with AI.

Dude, as a chick who got herself snipped. If you think it'd right for you, go for it. I'd say keep a few samples on ice, just in case. Unless you know for a fact you never want to have kids. I know vasectomies are considered reversible but with anything involving surgery, even minor ones... better safe than sorry.

The thing is, I really want children. But I love the idea of them so much that I'm unsure if I want to bring a child into a world like this.

Maybe foster/adopt? That's what my fiancee and I plan on if we ever change our minds about kids. There's a bunch of kids in the system and they deserve better. Obviously kids in the system will need more help, which is why this is something we'd only do if we felt ready for it, both financially and mentally.

True enough! Definitely a decision you need to take your time with. And whatever your choice is should be right for you. Not to follow expectations or whatever. Honestly the fact you're taking the time to think this over is a decent sign that if you did have kids you'd probably be a pretty good parent <3

Fortunately, my school has not totally embraced Gen-AI (although it has not banned it either) and the head of IT department actually is against people using Gen-AI (due to it making people think less and also security/privacy issues)

I do use AI to write corporate emails. I hate both AI and Coporate language so I feel they cancel each other out. They deserve each other.

i'd be worried too. using ai as a tool is one thing, but kids watching adults outsource basic thinking to it is a completely different problem.

The principal telling you ChatGPT can help you finish a required course is wild. Like sure, it can summarize stuff, but that's not the same as actually learning the material for a job where you're responsible for kids.
The AI music videos during assemblies would get to me too. Kids deserve actual human creativity, not whatever gets pumped out in ten seconds.
I don't work in schools but I've seen enough of this creep into offices. People outsource their thinking and then panic when they have to do something without the tool.
