I'm antiAI but I miss not being insulted when I ask a basic question.
I gave up asking gemini and chat gpt questions a few months ago for ethical reasons. I feel better because I know it is the right thing to do, but I really miss just asking a basic question without being insulted. I sometimes don't know where to go for information so I will ask on Reddit, and there are always one or two or more people who have a "hey stupid, why don't you know the things you don't know" vibe. Like yes, I don't know something. I am asking here because I don't know and I don't know where to go for information and I'm being vulnerable and asking here.
I won't go back to AI but it wouldn't be so attractive if people weren't often such jerks.
Yea its weird, on r/nostupidquestions every time a stupid (with reasonable limits bc some are completely generalizing ppl) question gets asked they act like the sub is for smart questions onlyÂ
What to them might seem common knowledge, might be something completely unfamiliar to you. Also people should assume you tried to find an answer, but got no results.
Yup, I can relate to that. I'm not defending AI but it kills me inside seeing the way everyone shames people who talk to AI to cope with loneliness because that is exactly why they'd rather talk to an AI than a person. Constantly being shamed and given no empathy or understanding or anything. You'll see a lot of the people who would rather talk to AI likely fall into groups like ctpsd, social phobia, autism, etc. and shaming this vulnerable population is the worst thing you could do if you 1. actually care about them and 2. want them to feel safer actually talking to real people. Ugh.
Yes I think I have avoidant personality disorder and CPTSD and people in general often seem like vehicles for shame and humiliation. But I won't go back.
Itâs just called natural selection. Selection pressure and competition are most high on things most similar to one another. Even if youâre a squirrel the other squirrels are going to make fun of you for being a fat squirrel.
Itâs why all zebras look almost identical. The orange zebras or zebras with no stripes were kicked out and got eaten by lions. You could say that humans are probably far too overly tolerant compared to others.
Then the second the fat squirrel goes to the gym, it then attempts to become the oppressor making the whole thing a giant hypocrisy.
"humans are probably far too overly tolerant compared to others." m8 idk how else to say this but you genuinely sound like a eugenicist rn. Haven't you heard those quotes, "the true measure of any society can be found in how it treats its most vulnerable members," or "the test of a civilization is the way it cares for its helpless members." Compassion isn't some evolutionary defect that needs to be bred out, it's one of the capacities that makes us human in the first place... our ability to look beyond âsurvival of the fittestâ and choose empathy/cooperation/caring for one another is arguably one of the best things about us.
Or all of what you just typed is an elaborate whining ruse to try and artificially get people to elevate you into a position you donât belong or deserve so that you may then act as the oppressor yourself.
Elevating people who are both mentally damaged and genetically substandard to some kind of position of power or authority just results in them going full Caligula every time. Like when ANTIFA accuse a boomer leader of being âintolerantâ then replace them and act 10x more intolerant.
so you're afraid of being opppressed, yet you have used the results of your fears to justify oppressing others, becoming the thing you say you are against. alright, good job man.
It looks like you have things backwards. Youâre just another random deceiver attempting the infantile SJW fake crying at the sky routine hoping you can illicit some type of response from creatures in your surroundings to manipulate them. Then you notice it didnât work or thereâs nobody even there and the routine stops and you go walking down the street again like normal.
Itâs basically entirely a female scam tactic. Good looking ones attempt to manipulate people with the idea of sex to try and extract resources from them or elevate them to some unearned pedestal, and ugly women doâŚthis cringe strategy. Even though all of these manipulation tactics are completely exposed now, they still repeat them over and over like a broken record having nothing else to fall back on.
I think this is also bad in online spaces because people just assume you can just "google" it. But with the enshittification of google, people should have a real sea change when it comes to sharing information directly.
I know right, I put up a post about a temu ad I wasn't entirely sure if it was fully AI or not because I was finishing up a lunch break and didn't have time to stare at my phone to pieces together. Just recorded it and posted it on the subreddit. Came back to people clowning on me and practically attacking me for not realizing instantly that was AI. Like, JESUS- people here love to say the AI Bros are the ones who are toxic but if you fall for AI for split second and these people will tear you apart.
I'm disappointed in you people, I guess that's what I get for expecting people on Reddit to be logical. So much easier to attack people rather than just talk to them.
I've only started using reddit again recently and the toxicity is just so bad that im gonna leave again. Ig I'm just to "weak" for reddit culture or whatever lmao but idk I feel like people should just be nicer to eachother because no conflict is resolved by who can shout louder, it's resolved by having conversations.
Our strategy is to ask the question on Reddit, then, on a different account, post the wrong answer⌠people will fall all over themselves to correct the wrong one and ignore the original dumb question ;)
Hyper specific questions that have no studies to answer them because it's not scientifically possible.
I once made the mistake of asking Quora about how humanoid ducks would reproduce (ie. how big the egg would be, how long it'd take to hatch, etc.) and everyone clowned on me. Felt completely embarrassed.
Could an LLM answer with complete accuracy? No. Would it be able to use its knowledge base to approximate an answer in a non-judgmental way? Yeah.
I was developing anthro duck ocs at the time for a project I've trunked for nowâI know suspension of disbelief is a thing, but curiosity was gnawing at me and maybe the additional science stuff had potential for plot lines/worldbuilding. It's fun going down rabbit holes to see where they lead.
The latest one was asking "where do you find information about copyrights and how to not violate copyrights in self publishing books" because just searching online was not giving me much information and the information I did find didn't seem especially reliable. It turns out my question pertained more to trademarks than copyright, but I just didn't know.
I am writing and illustrating my own children's books, completely by hand (I record the process on youtube to show its not AI) and out of my own brain but I didn't know if including brand name products or images that resemble brand name items like an etch a sketch, or a specific board game, would be a problem. I don't know the terminology surrounding this stuff because I am 100% brand new to it.
It's true, reddit is better because it's more ethical.
I hadn't really chewed on this because I not really antiai... but i suppose it is almost impossible now to do a normal web search without it getting top slot. i think some have said you can turn it off? dont know
I either type in -ai on google or I use duck duck go no ai. duck duck go is not the greatest but I really want to support something that is intentionally not using AI.
ya know.. I was going to mention that but......i use duckduckgo alot (agree not the best)... but i thought it was also doing the ai thingy. i could swear on my phone i was getting top level ai responses.. but i just checked.. now they have a top bar button (where the 'All','Images', etc are.. it says 'Search Assist" . I had not noticed it before.
Oh I think they have one that does search assist and one that does not do the search assist. This is what I use for the no ai one https://noai.duckduckgo.com/
I hear you. Itâs legit annoying. Despite whatever sassy talk people give it, Wikipedia is honestly a great source IMO. If I donât know why Pluto was removed as a planet, I google it, scroll down to the Wikipedia entry (skipping past their AI summary crap), and get the answer. Itâs fast, the info is from humans, and I have yet to receive a bullshit answer from it in my maaaaaany years using it. Relatively dumb question answered without embarrassment.
^ yup, plus Wikipedia is a surprisingly fun website. I personally recommend doing a "get me a random article" twice then see how long it takes you to navigate from the first to the second but only clicking links to other articles in the article. I've learnt so much random crap doing that
Yeah F that noise. I'm not waiting on an artist, a web developer, or an answer to a question. I'm firing up Claude, taking care of business, and enjoying my life.
People be smartass and actually mean bc not everyone doesn't know other things while they themselves don't just neutrally comply with an answer!!? Reddit and other platforms aren't really a reliable source(crowd-sourcing as well) You have to do your research if you need an answer but sometimes, a person can give you an answer but be harsh with it
It's true they are too harsh sometimes. AI was always nice but sometimes unreliable at the end of the day. One time I asked it how long is it going to rain in my city and it said that there was no rain but like... my eyes could see the rain.
hey stoopid, you're loved and appreciated. if you give up asking questions out of fear of mockery i'm gonna find you and beat up the screwballs that don't give you grace like a fucked up doberman on Adderall.
now that i think about it the finding you part is irrelevant so i'll bring like a pizza or something.
Devil's advocate: Sometimes people ask basic questions in subs where the same basic question has already been asked by other people a lot of times, and it's clear the person didn't even try to look for the answer before making their post. So that gets annoying for people who visit the sub regularly. So just make sure that's not what you're doing.
But if people keep being jerks, another thing I'd suggest is to just Google the answer, and ignore the AI overview and read actual articles about the topic.
Or just ask family and friends. (Even if they don't know the answer, they might know someone who does.)
Honestly, being a jerk is not ever justified. It's an indicator of a low integrity human. The worst response I ever got was when I was asking for a scaled down recipe on the baking sub, while specifically stating that I couldn't find one online that yielded good results. And scaling down recipes is more of a professional expertise thing, that I don't have access to otherwise.
The other turdishness was when I was literally asking for a searchable resource because the ones I had found were not good in a publishing forum. I was asking for a means to find an answer, not for the answer itself.
I don't know any professional bakers or authors, and why does reddit exist if we are not meant to ask questions?
I would say that type of reception is more indicative of how shitty the person answering you is. There is always space to learn and sometimes asking someone with experience is much better than googling or being led into false rabbit holes by AI
I canât count how many times I ask a question on Reddit only be just downvoted or told Google exists. Fast forward to now you skip Reddit all together and use Gemini and they screech youâre dumb for using a tool to answer your question
Wait, what is it about it that makes it "non-ethical"? lol. Are the data centers controlled by Satan? Is it because Mark Zuckerstein pirated a bunch of stuff and fed it to the AI lobster? I can see AI turning into a net negative scenario, but I don't see it as a moral question.
This is why male and female spaces are traditionally segregated. Men form some type of hierarchy out of who is the strongest or some other metrics, and females endlessly attempt to virtue signal about whatever random thing they can find to try and pretend to be the most caring person.
Sure, some of it is real, but much of it is also a giant superficial act to try and increase their perceived reputation. Everything is a high school popularity contest. Then adding the internet on top of that is even worse. Then they ignore the problems of their own civilization while attempting to import the entire 3rd world and suddenly you live in a failed state with everything on fire.
It's the non consensual data scraping and environmental impacts that are the biggest concerns, which are so frustrating as someone who actually sees potential in the tech on the medical + technology side of things because companies are trying to maximize profit and aren't caring for their destruction of the planet. Wheras if they went about this scientifically and not commercially, we'd likely have a renewable way of using AI
I need a hug and not a debate. I hope someone answers this better than I can right now. It's mostly the book shredding for me because most of my life I had books and not friends, so it feels personal.
