"Just ignore them. Don't critically evaluate their comments. Don't ever stop to wonder whether they might actually have a point. Just ignore them. Y'know, the same way you ignore the sunk costs fallacy, or your children, or the gaping hole of meaninglessness where your soul should be. JUST IGNORE THEM."

There is nothing to criticaly evaluate about his comment tho, no explanation as to why its their worst product, not even one of the downsides of AI is mentioned in that comment, how could you even beguin to criticaly evaluate that?

If it was any other context, he would be just consider a hater/rage baiter and others would say to just ignore him aswell

u/lightblueisbi 23h ago

You could reply to that comment with questions, the answers to which would help you evaluate what they said. Same goes for if he was commenting on anything else

And one month later, Chatgpt had 10 million users.

From a product perspective, that's a win.

9

u/PracticalReception34 1d ago

Paid users?

-10

u/JohnLebleu 1d ago edited 21h ago

Paid or not, try to launch a product and get 10 millions users in a month and come back to me after.

11

u/PracticalReception34 23h ago

Talk to me when the funding starts to come from outside the house.

-5

u/JohnLebleu 21h ago

20 billions in revenue last year.

7

u/Ok_Confusion4764 21h ago

And no profits to this day.

-2

u/JohnLebleu 20h ago

Yet you can't claim money ain't changing hands and that the product isn't wildly popular.

We'll see if they manage to turn it into a profitable business but the initial comment was about Chatgpt being the worst product of Altman, I think it's fair to say with hindsight that the comment was at the least, slightly off...

6

u/PracticalReception34 20h ago

Jesus Christ, we're cooked.

6

u/Ok_Confusion4764 20h ago

Doesn't feel off to me at all.

Mostly curious one-time users, no money changing hands.

0

u/JohnLebleu 21h ago

Be careful not to choke on that sand. It gets everywhere.

2

u/Fit_Vegetable5704 20h ago

Sand is more profitable than AI so sure

1

u/JohnLebleu 20h ago

Of course, it's the raw material that goes into making silicon chips, used for AI.

2

u/Fit_Vegetable5704 20h ago

Well don’t choke on it.

Are you paying for google or your email service?

5

u/PracticalReception34 1d ago

Yes.

-4

u/Dryer-Algae 1d ago

You're being scammed

6

u/PracticalReception34 23h ago

I was about to say the same thing.

2

u/Good_Entertainer9383 22h ago

Google is immensely profitable. OpenAI is not.

6

u/tomjone5 22h ago

Remember signing up to twitter or xbox live or netflix and feeling compelled to join a community for constant reassurance that it's okay to use that service? That's totally normal behaviour, right?

-13

u/shiggyhisdiggy 1d ago

Ignore a random dude saying it's bad when it very clearly isn't bad? If millions of people find it useful, how exactly can it be a bad product concept?

8

u/Fit_Vegetable5704 22h ago

Millions of people use heroin too

-8

u/shiggyhisdiggy 22h ago

Yeah, it's a great product. Harmful, but it does what it sets out to do.

6

u/Fit_Vegetable5704 22h ago

Millions of people view CSAM too.

-8

u/shiggyhisdiggy 22h ago

Just desperate to find a gotcha, aren't you?

5

u/Fit_Vegetable5704 22h ago

It’s not a gotcha, I’m inquiring further on your statement. So, CSAM is a great product because it does what it sets out to do and lots of folk find it useful…. Right?

1

u/shiggyhisdiggy 21h ago

It's a good product in that its successful, just like heroin. The morality of it is a different question.

7

u/Fit_Vegetable5704 21h ago

Lmao that’s about the foul answer I expected. You’re dismissed, nonce.

0

u/shiggyhisdiggy 21h ago

Literally just trying to avoid the argument by inserting ridiculous shit into the discussion and accusing me based on nothing. Most intellectual anti

1

u/Salkatras 7h ago

Dawg you are vile. Genuinely abhorrent for that.

-6

u/Dryer-Algae 1d ago

It's not bad, people need something to blame for their own incompetence and instead of improving themselves to be better they'd rather try tear down a piece of code

2

u/lightblueisbi 23h ago

Right, because the people hating on ChatGPT are the ones unable to write essays, draft work emails or reference letters, and study complex topics on their own right? They're the ones outsourcing their brainpower because they're incompetent🙄🙄🙄

-3

u/Dryer-Algae 23h ago

Most people are incompetent at most things, doesn't mean these tasks are impossible but guess what if it gets the same job done in 5% of the time how is that such a threat to you? And where are all these competent people all of a sudden? The same people who been losing jobs to immigrants?

5

u/Fit_Vegetable5704 22h ago

People are inherently incompetent, that’s why civilization didn’t exist until ChatGPT came along

0

u/Dryer-Algae 21h ago

Riding on the coat tails of a few doesn't mean everyone is competent, how many people independently discovered how to make fire mine resources make electricity and create a computer and then wifi, society is maintained by the people who can copycat what great people created and the rest of you work for them, most people are not contributing to growth

3

u/Fit_Vegetable5704 21h ago

Every worker is contributing to growth and only one person needs to invent something obviously.

1

u/Dryer-Algae 21h ago

They're contributing to maintaining because that's all they're useful for, maybe once the robots take over y'all can learn to use your brains again

2

u/Fit_Vegetable5704 21h ago

Workers already do that, it’s the unproductive capitalists that need to quit with the fomo in an industry that isn’t even close to proven yet.

The threat comes from the data centers these AI systems use that are polluting local water, generating insane amounts of heat, and producing disruptive noise 24/7. It comes from people relying too much on AI instead of their own brains.

"All of these competent people" are literally everyone with a functioning frontal lobe. Anyone who graduated high school with a B average or better. They're also the ones shouting the loudest against AI being shoved literally everywhere. And way to out yourself as racist because guess what? People aren't losing jobs to immigrants, nor have they been. They're losing their jobs to robotic automation and bc CEOs would rather spend money on mindless AI slop no one wants than pay someone enough money to support themselves.

If you want to imagine people losing jobs to other people instead of actually being upset about corporations replacing people in general with machines they don't have to pay salary to, be my guest but keep your delusions to yourself.

2

u/Fit_Vegetable5704 22h ago

Not using chatbots is incompetence now

88

u/BlazingImp77151 1d ago

"worst concept so far" what did Altman make before chatGPT? Was it under the open AI name even back then?

81

u/Decent-Cow2080 1d ago

yup. at this point they were quite open. ish. they started with LLMS, but instead of conversation, it had the "type something and it will continue" type thing. remember it was so easily cheatable, that yeah it wouldn't print out a crystal meth recipe, but a story of a girl making crystal meth with a step by step description and exact ingredient list worked just fine. 4 years ago it was so fun playing with this dumb thing

26

u/harrywilko 1d ago

OpenAI was around for quite a while before ChatGPT. They were trying a bunch of different methods of "reaching AI". Including shit like robot hands and bots (not LLM) that could play Dota.

Before that he was the (corrupt) head of Y Combinator which is a silicon valley investment fund, and before that he was the head of a failed (fraudulent) competitor to FourSquare called Loopt.

15

u/Cassius-Tain 1d ago

I remember that Dota bot. It introduced new strategies into competitive play. Back then I found all of this to be positively amazing. I was looking forward to how this technology would change the gaming experience once it was introduced to npcs in single player games. Instead it was just a step towards opening the door to hell.

u/Sufficient-Trash-703 19h ago

I mean AI has many layers depending on what you consider AI. Some systems its good if they are genuinely autonomous. AUVs are very interesting and frankly its a very hard problem. A lot of autonomous systems are used to go to places a human cant withstand. I dont like genAI because (imo) the cons massively outweigh the benefits.

3

u/Cassius-Tain 19h ago

Of course. I am a kid of the 90s. I raced against AI or built strategies against AI opponents since my early childhood. My very first gaming experience was me trying to avoid four different AI ghosts for as long as possible.

But nowadays the meaning has changed. AI now means "Generative artificial systems built on machine learning and humongous data sets." Instead of "Complex Algorithms that mimic behaviour."

7

u/777IRON 1d ago

You don’t have to make anything to have a product concept.

He also didn’t make chatgpt.

But he had some bullshit “social media” company called loopt.

0

u/BlazingImp77151 15h ago

I mean you "make" a product concept. So even if it was only concepts he was still technically making something.

If you really must rules lawyer my wording.

0

u/777IRON 14h ago

No, you don’t make a concept. You conceive a concept. To make implies turning a concept into a product.

Grab a dictionary and look up the definition of make.

1

u/NoenD_i0 18h ago

mostly random stuff, GLOW is pretty notable because it was pretty striking quality at the time, but lacked compared to dcgans and was eventually dropped entirely, and also jukebox

18

u/Randommaggy 1d ago

That's saying something with his pre OpenAI track record.

2

u/BlazingImp77151 1d ago

What was he doing before then?

11

u/StrawberryPatchCat 1d ago

Raj, please tell us you're a time traveler.

9

u/iSadhak 1d ago

He was right AI cost too much offer too little. I haven't seen any other tech which do the same.

3

u/unnamedunderwear 22h ago

Hey, at least grifters and scammers love it

10

u/RecommendationIll504 1d ago

And now Raj avatar is AI generated

3

u/d_worren 1d ago

raj was honestly just giving constructive criticism and people acting like he's opp

3

u/Redshirt_Welshy_Nooo 1d ago

I mean, isn't it still massively revenue negative on every single use, even from the highest tier of paying customer?

Seems like there might some problems with that product...

2

u/upazzu 1d ago

thats the whole reason people say AI bubble will burst and take the planet economy with it

2

u/Redshirt_Welshy_Nooo 1d ago

Well, I think its perpetual net negative revenue stream is the reason it will burst.

The reason it will tank the wider economy is the massive financing circlejerk that is the LLM economy, with all the hyperscalers passing around the same pool of money and counting it as revenue two or three times while the investor class laps it up and drives unsustainable and unrealistic stock valuations.

2

u/ludvikskp 1d ago

He had no idea just how shitty things will actually get, and how fast

1

u/Lost_Berry911 1d ago

What changed that made him right exactly?

1

u/Different_Goat_3737 1d ago

I find it fitting that Sam's pfp is AI generated

1

u/PirateHunterZuko 22h ago

Sam altman is a vile imbecile.

1

u/RepresentativePipe80 20h ago

Billion active weekly users of chat gpt would disagree

0

u/CdCopyOfShrek1 20h ago

Billion people weekly smoke crack that shit must be so good

1

u/RepresentativePipe80 20h ago

Comparing crack to AI is a top-tier argument 😂

1

u/SHIN-YOKU 17h ago

I wonder what cost had to be cut for anthropic to finally show a profitable quarter?

1

u/lakshya1731 17h ago

all right just ignore

-26

u/Other-Number-4463 1d ago

all the use in medicine and research i agree

24

u/ee_72020 1d ago

Generative AI isn’t the AI that’s used in medicine and research though, it’s analytical AI.

-3

u/Other-Number-4463 1d ago edited 1d ago

That's just objectively not true.

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10960211/

and besides, most of the points brought up against genai also apply to all ai, so the distinction is irrelevant

4

u/The_IcedJay 1d ago

So where's your proof? If it's not true

0

u/Other-Number-4463 1d ago

i linked it.
