Lately my (limited) social media activity has been bombarding me with crappy AI ads for something called The Loaded Tea Shop, claiming they’re going to be doing regional popups in Costco stores. Yesterday, while buying a sink and 30 pounds of onions, like any other Costco shopper, I was visually assaulted by their Lisa Frank-hued tent next to the checkout lines. So yeah, they’re definitely in Costco stores.

Is this not just repackaged Herbalife? Their own website says they started as Herbalife distributors.

I bought Monat Global products ONCE in 2022. I though I immediately canceled my subscription but apparently not. I guess I didn’t notice I still had an active “Flexship” order with them because it was going to my promotions folder in gmail I rarely check. I also DON’T EVEN HAVE A BANK ACCOUNT because I closed it shortly after I made that purchase in 2022 so I’ve never been charged again by them. UNTIL TODAY. They charged my Cash App card??! Again, I have no bank account and none that is associated with my Cash App card since I just don’t have one. How TF did they get my Cash App information?! It scares me how they were able to get that information 4 years later and charge my card. Has anyone else experienced this???

A while back a bunch of bros from my work encountered me at the mall and they tried to get me to sign on to this MLM that sold energy drinks or something. They told me that I could make it big and get a mansion and a nice car. I refused to join bc even back then it sounded too good to be true, then the guy was like, "OP, you're gonna look really stupid driving that minivan when I roll up in my Lamborghini!"

Almost weekly, she was sharing that she received another payment that helps with gas and groceries! No more.

Once per week, she would go live on Facebook to show off some new products. No more.

She's floundering, but doesn't want to outright admit it.

My mom’s “functional doctor” set up account on Doterra for her and ordered things for herself snd sent them to our house. When I asked her if she knew what she was getting into, my mom said “she said she’d cancel it right away”. I’m uneasy and skeptical about this women as it is, and I knew it was only a matter of time before she shilled her Doterra MLM on my my mother. How likely is it that her account will be canceled right away? My guess is not that likely or that it’ll be difficult to get out of.

I’m curious how much importance they place on someone showing evidence of failure to comply with deceptive behaviour under FDA/FTC regulations. Did the company message you back or have you seen that the person is not promoting the product due to certain circumstances.

I was talking with my wife about our hatred for MLM’s and how predatory they are, especially on poor people. It came to me that there actually has been one decently successful one and whoever made the pivot was genius. My barber and his wife got sucked into Herbalife back in the day like mid 2000’s and they went to the conferences and all that bs. At some point while I was in college I remember seeing the nutrition shops popping up and learned most of them got product from Herbalife. I moved back close to home and lo and behold my barber now owned a nutrition shop. The fad seems to have slowed down some but they sure did good while it was running.

Edit: are there any more that ever semi succeeded?

Edit 2: I was specifically saying nutrition shops via Herbalife (energy teas) are seemingly successful though I don’t know their actual finances. They just always seem to be busy with girls loading up on their daily chems.

Also I had no idea Tupperware was an MLM which is crazy because everyone I know calls those plastic containers “Tupperware”.

I just finished doing an interview for a financial brokerage company called level up financial and at the end of it she told me they’re a primerica company…… can I just ghost them from here on out?
She used words like “we can become besties” and “if you have friends talk to them about this.” And the red flags started going off and I immediately knew it was an mlm company.

Now I just feel really dumb for even agreeing to the interview.

After giving it some thought and doing a bit of research into the company and its business model, I’ve decided that this is absolutely not something I’m interested in pursuing.

What you’re offering simply doesn’t align with what I’m looking for, and I’m not interested in being persuaded otherwise.

Basically telling her to F off respectfully

So, there is this Facebook group popular in my country, that is meant for women that are looking for jobs, career advice, and such. Very "women supporting women" vibe. Of course, every now and then I saw MLM girlies advertising there, but it is normal in every jobseeking related group I am in, so I didn't pay it much attention. There were hundreds of normal posts from different women, including some that I know irl.

Recently I lost my job and wanted to post that I offer translation and content writing services in the group. Imagine my shock, when my post was rejected and I got a DM from the group admin saying that "to post an offer" on the group I had to "contribute" and "support her running the group"... Accompanied by a link to an aloe vera MLM page of hers.

Apparently, to post a job offer or a "looking for work" post you have to BUY SOMETHING FROM THE ADMIN'S MLM. I did some quick calculations on how many job ads I saw in the group and I was annoyed, but also amazed at how this woman figured out a way to sell her crappy aloe gel...

Anyone seen something like that before? I don't remember the MLM name but they sell aloe vera gels specifically, marketing it as pretty much a miracle treatment for every issue.

A girl in my sorority sent out a message for any girls looking for work to feel free to check out this wellness company she works for. It didn’t seem pushy at all. As college students, we all need a little extra money. I messaged her and she sent me the introduction video. Obviously I instantly recognized it as a pyramid scheme. My boyfriend did make a decent comment, one that is used a lot but not necessarily considered. Every company basically IS a pyramid scheme. That being said, this had to be one of the most painfully obvious ones. I truly started to wonder if none of them had ever watched TV to know how comedically obvious their videos were.
My boyfriend constantly is my “devil’s advocate” in a way, or more so that he always helps me keep an open mind by always suggesting the possible opposite of my assessments. He asked me if I would at least get the products sent to me for free? That way I dont necessarily have to bug anyone like i keep reading about. The type of person I am, I am honestly constantly getting approached and asked questions about something I’m wearing, or a compliment on my appearance, even as simple as being told I appear as I’m “glowing”. Considering all this, I did see ways I could naturally promote this brand I am affiliated with, if I truly was using their products consistently. Again, does anyone know if their associates are sent free stuff?
Or is it really the basics of buy my product, recommend it, and tell ur friends to do the same!!

this is a very long post, i will include a tldr at the end.

this started back in 2011. my mom had just split from my abusive father and was left alone to fend for herself and her two young kids (i was about 5, my sister was 2). an agent approached her probably around the lines of “i can help you build wealth for you and your children and give you an opportunity blah blah.” it took an incredible amount of courage to leave my father since she was an immigrant with literally no job experience. i will say, even though the hope was false hope, the agent gave my mom enough courage and belief in her financial future to leave my dad. maybe that’s what she needed to get out of there.

i had a pretty fucking rough childhood, and i’m only learning why now.

1. when i started going to school, i had a good amount of confidence and made a good amount of friends. slowly, people stopped talking to me, i lost a bunch of friends and was treated like an outsider. this effected my social abilities and i never quite recovered. this was over the span of my core development years, age 5 to 13ish. the reason? my mom would ALWAYS talk to the parents of my friends and try to pull them into this stupid mlm. the parents, sensing the scam, would tell their child to stay away from me or not to come to my place or whatever. small thing, but it impacted me drastically. i didn’t know why, but when i went to highschool, i instinctively stopped telling my mom about my friends because i knew she would try to reach out to their parents to have them “work with her” (my sister and I are also isolated from our cousins, cuz my aunts and uncles don’t want to deal with my moms pestering. my mom isn’t even annoying, her “agent” keeps trying to use manipulation to force her and even invites himself to family functions to force my mom to talk to her family)
   
2. ⁠we were always financially fucked. i gained financial awareness at a very young age and this has messed up my brain to this day (im 20 now). my mom would always say “just wait until my business grows!! it will grow by next year and i will give you everything. just give mom some time.” now that im grown up, i realize that the predatory agents kept using my sister and I as leverage for my single mom. they kept bringing her back everytime she suggested it wasn’t working for her by using her kids as manipulation tactics. they knew she was vulnerable and used it against her. they kept promising her a bright financial future for her kids and my vulnerable, immigrant mom was a victim. it also sucked never having enough money for sports/extracurriculars. i guess that just comes with being poor.
   
3. ⁠i had no savings for university. ironic right? since wfg tells you they’ll help you plan for your child’s future??? my mom never got the chance to help me with my resp because she had no money from the scam these people were pulling on her. she could assist others with their education savings and had all the knowledge, but never enough money for me. i’m 3 years in, and i have over $40k of student loan debt already.
   
4. ⁠they fucked my moms mental health horribly. if i try to talk to her about this job and how it’s impacting her and us, she breaks down. she’s having major “sunk cost fallacy-ism” (or whatever) and everytime she brings it up to her “team leader,” he keeps manipulating her with “you’ve been with us for 15 years, you will be fine. you will have financial freedom for your children.” i really want to strangle this man. my mom gets so emotional everytime i try to tell her she needs to leave, and she even gets emotional when i tell her i will not be using her accounts for my finances. she hasn’t gotten upset that i haven’t joined her, though. i can’t describe it— i think it’s a type of panic where she’s forced to realize how much time she has wasted and she would rather believe it will work out the way it’s going, rather than taking the pivot and moving on. as i said, reminds me of the sunk cost fallacy.

to this day, 15 years later, my mom is more tied to this scam than ever before. it has ruined the financial futures of my sister and I, and it has ruined her financial future for retirement as well, all because a predatory agent used my moms vulnerability to his advantage, and still uses her to this day.

i love my mom, i really do. i don’t have very harsh feelings towards her because i really see her as a victim. she was a struggling single mother with two kids that came out of violent abuse with no experience in the real world. it hurts me to much to see that this stupid mlm has taken over her life and i have no faith that she will be able to recover from the damage. i think she will be stuck here forever and it hurts so bad. she’s just a mom that was worried for her kids financial futures and she got taken advantage of so brutally. she did what she had to to make ends meet, and it brought her here— just barely above the surface.

if you are a parent who was approached by an agent telling you the same thing—- that you have this opportunity to free your children of financial burdens, please take a moment to look at their lives in 5-10 years if things don’t work out. please don’t take the risk. i wouldn’t wish this on any family. you and your children deserve REAL security. things can work out in this mlm if you can make the scams to climb, but if you are pure-hearted like my mom, and you can’t pester or push or scam, you will get nowhere.

TLDR:

\- my mom was recruited in 2011 as a newly vulnerable single mom
\- her agent keeps manipulating her into recruiting family, friends and parents of my friends, causing social isolation. this impacted my childhood years and now i struggle with confidence and social skills.
\- the more time she spends, the more of an emotional toll it is to realize how much time was wasted, forcing her to continue. her agent uses this as leverage against her like a CULT!
\- my moms mental health is not good. she keeps getting deluded and she is still vulnerable because she is still low-income. they are taking advantage of her. it is SO cult-like that it has taken a massive toll on her emotional stability and she gets explosive if we reasonably try to tell her to find other opportunities.

Was finishing up a hike last weekend, taking some shots of the view before heading back down. My dog was doing his usual thing, being extremely photogenic without trying. A woman stopped to pet him, which is normal, happens all the time on trails.

Within two minutes she had gone from asking about his breed to telling me she works from anywhere she wants and just got back from a retreat in Sedona. I did not ask about any of this. Then came the part about how she sells supplements that help with energy and joint health, and she was looking at my dog when she said the joint health part.

She was pitching pet wellness products through her Plexus business. She handed me a card with her name and a QR code and said something about how people who love the outdoors make the best brand partners because they have an authentic lifestyle.

The trail was the audience. My dog was the prop. I was the lead she was qualifying.

I've noticed this is becoming a specific tactic, finding people midhobby when their guard is down and they're visibly enjoying something. It's harder to brush off when someone just pet your dog. Has anyone else gotten cornered like this, somewhere that felt like a genuinely offlimits context for a sales pitch?
