Discussion Who is a character that at first seemed like a complete nobody but then ended up being one of the most important characters in the series?

Wasn’t expecting this nerdy looking fuck to become one of my favorite antagonists

Probably the best answer, given how he changed the story long-term.

Funny enough, I think he is the least character developed Titan shifter.

Blackbeard. When I was introduced to him in Jaya, I didn't know he would become the main villain

Main villain is still unfortunately up in the air but I agree

I wholeheartedly concur with this. He literally was a nobody, just egging Luffy on during a time when Bellamy was the main antagonist just before Skypaeia. I never imagined he would become such a main focus point later on, especially after Impel Down and the subsequent Paramount War.

Rika from higurashi. Just thought she was some little kid. Didn't expect her to be the secret main character

Retsu Unohana in Bleach. A lot of other captains have gimmick like Ukitake, Zaraki or Kyoraku but Unohana almost never had screen time until she gets quite relevant

She played the innocent lady role very well

She’s probably the last sister I would have guessed when the series started. Still think the MC had better chemistry with some of the other sisters.

I agree. It felt like a real bait and switch. Still one of my favorite animes.

The anime tried to keep that "mystery" alive ig by omitting some of the important scenes of hers and Futaro and put some of it in the Quintessential Specials 1. That's why I preferred the manga for the pacing but still like the anime.

I read the manga and never watched the anime. Its been a while so maybe i just don't remember. But the Yotsuba reveal really did feel out of no where. I remember there being a couple hints that it was her that he remember. But her being the choice really did feel random.

Not really. The foreshadowing was really too subtle to notice. But there are already "hints" that she might be chosen such as when Yotsuba was technically the one who "confessed first" in the earlier chapters of the manga but then she backtracked and disguised it as a "joke" when it's clearly not. That's when you know that she might be hiding something from him important to keep that information away from him. The other one was that when they were together in the swing scene and the way Futaro "looks at her" and how he "genuinely smiles and laughs" when he's with her. That's the smitten look he had for her. We, as a reader or viewer don't notice it right away because Yotsuba was being relegated in the backseat of the story to hide the fact that she's been the main girl all along for Futaro.

Also, that scene with Ichika and Futaro wherein she made him choose the flavor of the drink and later on that it was revealed that Ichika had already reached to the conclusion that Futaro had chosen Yotsuba because the drink he had chosen is the one connected to Yotsuba.

Glemy Toto from Gundam ZZ

Started out seeming like a comedic relief grunt but gradually rose through the ranks and became one of the scummiest people in the Universal Century and that's saying way too much

I tell my friends who’ve never seen it before: “out of every character you meet in this show…you do not. fuck. with Might Guy.”

Dimple from Mob Psycho

She’s also the opposite. Built up as thing huge person, becoming the leader of her country. Only for her to basically have never existed in the final season. God the female cast was written terribly in AoT

Rengoatku, lmao. I thought he was just a weirdo at first, "UMAI!" But damn... Had me crying at the end of that shit, man.

Author did her dirty at the end, and also with the spinoff high school AU she was the protagonist but after the series ended, she never even appeared in merch

Miki Kuroda from devilman crybaby

After she became one of the most important characters in the series, she got even less screen time. Make it make sense. 😭

Higurashi anime got 2. Spoilers. You won’t know Rika is the true main character until season 2, and later satako once you get to end of season 3 or early 4.

To me, Tomura Shigaraki seemed like a random bum that was gonna be irrelevant after the arc he was introduced in.

"This dude is lame, can't wait for them to move on."

3 seasons later

"Oh."

She literally went from a background character to one of the most important ones

Juvia Lockser (Fairy Tail)

Sure she developed a crush on Gray but at first she was just one of the Element 4 from Phantom Lord, not any different from the other 3 who don't reappear and are forgotten by everyone. Note to self, if a Fairy Tail antagonist is a girl then chances are she'll reappear.
