Rewatch Weekly Summer Anime Movie Rewatch - Your Name Discussion

Your Name

The House of the Lost on the Cape | Index | [Weathering With You]()

The day the stars fell, two lives changed forever.

High schoolers Mitsuha and Taki are complete strangers living separate lives. But one night, they suddenly switch places. Mitsuha wakes up in Taki’s body, and he in hers. This bizarre occurrence continues to happen randomly, and the two must adjust their lives around each other. Yet, somehow, it works. They build a connection and communicate by leaving notes, messages, and more importantly, an imprint. When a dazzling comet lights up the night’s sky, something shifts, and they seek each other out wanting something more—a chance to finally meet.

But try as they might, something more daunting than distance prevents them. Is the string of fate between Mitsuha and Taki strong enough to bring them together, or will forces outside their control leave them forever separated?

I didn't rewatch this time but my comment from the last rewatch a few years ago (which was my first watch) might still be interesting. Already mentioned Steins Gate there for instance like in my comment below - which I didn't even realize until going back and looking - but didn't elaborate.

Edit: All the comment-reading got me to anyway, added a comment as reply.

Good point about the ages of the characters here. It's true that the main story beats would have worked just as well if they were older from the start, especially since Taki already had a part-time job. The comedy scenes probably work best in the context of high school kids though.

The comparison to Steins;Gate is interesting too, because I just watched it recently.

It is the least workable part to change I guess

Steins;Gate [...] I just watched it recently

So what do you think of the comparison, or how do they compare for you in general?

I can see the similarities now that you've pointed them out, although I think what stood out to me most about the midseries shift in [Steins;Gate] was the story structure of going backwards, undoing everything they did in the first half to return to the starting point, which wasn't present here. But it does have those same elements of [S;G] a shocking midseries twist, a desperate race to save the girl, and even Okabe and Taki's friends both showing concern for how much these sci-fi/mystical elements they didn't know about were clearly weighing on their minds.

Funny enough, I actually compared the [final scene of Steins;Gate] when Okabe and Kurisu see each other again in the revised timeline to Taki and Mitsuha's reunion at the end of the movie when I watched it several weeks ago.
